Some people just don't get it.
Introduction
Modern Western square dance clubs are coordinating across the U.S. to have square dancing declared the state folk dance of all fifty states. At the time of this writing, there are twenty-two states that have passed legislation designating square dance as the "state folk dance." Many of these bills were passed after 1988, which was the last time that a bill was in the U.S. Congress to designate square dancing as the national folk dance. It appears that having failed on a national level, modern Western square dancers are trying to accomplish the same thing on a state by state basis. By contrast, traditional square dances are usually open to any member of the community, with no membership or certification required. Since most traditional communities get by with no more than a few dozen calls in their repertoire, lessons are not required, although some dances may feature a short workshop before the dance or "walk throughs" during the dance itself. The dancers wear street clothes, not square dance costumes. Finally, true folk dances are always linked to a folk music tradition. Recorded music is a rarity at traditional dances.

State Folk Dance, Square Dancing In 1994, the Utah State Legislature designated Square Dancing to be the state folk dance of Utah (Utah Code) . The Utah Code states "...square dancing means the folk dance which is called, cued, or prompted to the dancers, and includes squares, rounds, clogging, contra, line, and heritage dances." The Mormon Pioneers loved to dance and they participated in wholesome entertainment to escape the rigors of the harsh frontier life. Andrew Love Neff, in his book History of Utah 1847-1869 , says "The Mormons love dancing... almost every third man is a fiddler, and every one must learn to dance. In the winter of 1854-1855, there were dancing schools in almost every one of the nineteen school houses, and necessarily so much more attention to dancing involved so much less attention to study." He went on to say "Let it be remembered that only square dances were indulged in, that the gatherings were opened and closed with prayer, and that preachments were often interspersed with dancing, a happy combination of religion with pleasure and enjoyment..." The early British traveler, Richard Burton, noted that everyone danced including The Prophet, the Apostles, the Bishops which lent a highly cultural value and worth, and of course it did bring young women and young men together in a social setting which might result eventually in marriage.

Welcome to the home page of
Houston, Texas The Polka and Cajun Dance Site for Texas
Card courtesy of Betty Beyer, Northside Printing, Houston, 713-681-0303 Hi, and welcome to our site! We like to dance. We dance polka and Cajun, and C/W swing when polka and Cajun aren’t handy. We dance mostly within a three-hour radius of Houston, and also go out of state for polka festivals. In 2002 we reached our goal of dancing in all 50 states. This site is intended to help others learn about polka and Cajun dancing in Texas. You might begin by reviewing the History of Polka music and dance. If history is not your bag, you can go directly to Polka in Texas for an overview. A summary of historic Texas Dance Halls is included. Recommended reading for the Texas polka buff. See recent articles on the original Polish Home in Houston, and Welcome Hall in Industry. See also the article on "Dance Halls and Last Calls," by Texas c/w musician Geronimo Trevino III. This book is exciting history for anyone with an interest in Texas dance halls. If you are an accordion player, check out the article on the Accordion Association. Currently featured are articles on "Texas Talent Rising," the Westphalia Waltz, the Moravia Store, and Dance Clubs in Texas. See also articles on the re-opening of the fabled Mraz Ballroom in Houston, along with an essay on Polish music in Texas by Brian Marshall. By the way, Brian recently sent us a "Polish Perspective" on the origin of polka, and the origin of the Westphalia Waltz. He makes a credible case that both originated in Poland. See his letter on the "Polka in Texas" page.
