Our twice-weekly classes, taught by three experienced community dancers, mix flying Scottish leaps with flowing English figures and wild contra swings. Here, new dancers find their feet and student musicians find their instruments, joined by faculty, staff, alumni, and community members. Luckily, the Physical Education department recognizes that folk dancing is exercise and will grant you a semester's worth of PE credit, should you desire it, for coming to a semester of our classes. All of our classes have live music, produced mostly by fellow students and recent alumni. The music centers on fiddle and keyboard, but we mix in whistles, accordion, bodhran, electronic bass, cello, and clarinet. Since

FOLK DANCES
by David Courtney, Ph.D. There is really no such genre as folk dancing. Rather, there is a large body of unrelated non-classical dance forms. The only thing common among these dance forms is their rural origins. Many folk dances are performed by ordinary people rather than professional dancers. It is very usual that on special occasions, the villagers will gather and sing and dance, accompanying themselves on a variety of folk instruments. Such special occasions include harvesting, planting, marriages and religious holidays. Sometimes the folk dances are performed by professionals. There is the institution of the folk theatre. Professional musicians, actors and dancers travel from village to village performing their dance dramas. This seems to be a rural extension of the ancient theatrical tradition found in the Natya Shastra . However, it appears to have degenerated into a rural tradition. One example of the folk theatre is the Yaksha Gana of Karnatika. It would be more correct to divide these folk dances into two categories: folk and tribal. The difference between the two is cultural. Folk dances are the rural extensions of the larger Indian population. Examples are the Bhangra and the Garba . However, the tribal dances are performed by India's aboriginal populations. These people, known as

This internationally acclaimed video release celebrates Gumboot Dancing, the international dance phenomenon that has swept the globe. Gumboot Dancing was born out of the oppressive gold mines of South Africa. Forbidden to speak and in almost complete darkness, the slave laborers developed their own language by slapping their gumboots and rattling their ankle chains. In time it has developed into a truly unique dance form that has captured an international audience. Unrivaled in its energy and physicality, it celebrates the body as a musical instrument whilst highlighting South Africa's rich and complex culture. Included is a 53-minute documentary, "The Gumboots Story". "An international hit!" 80 mins.
VHS - NTSC format only (Canada, USA).

Welcome to The Society of Folk Dance Historians Home Members Videos Contact us ... About us Search for: Dance or Step Country or Culture Person or Organization The Society of Folk Dance Historians (SFDH), a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational corporation founded in 1987, collects, preserves, and disseminates information about the history and practice of international folk dancing (IFD), a social movement that originated in approximately 1894 and continues to this day. This information not only preserves American cultural history, it occasionally contains the only surviving documentation of ethnic cultures that have vanished from their countries of origin, e.g., European Jewish, Rom (Gypsy), Western Armenian, the several Bosnian, Assyrian, and Kurdish cultures. The SFDH archives comprise one of the largest such collections in the world and the only such collection maintained on a daily basis by dance historians and for dance historians. This Encyclopedia was compiled by Ron Houston and published by the Society of Folk Dance Historians.

The first edition of the Greek Folk Dance Resource Manual was first written in 1991 in an attempt by the author, Charlie Kyriacou ( Charlie's Photobiography - 34 photos, takes a few minutes to download ), to share information with Greek folk dance directors and enthusiasts concerning Greek folk dance, music, folklore and costumes. Since information and people's address and phone numbers change quickly, the manual is continually updated. The ninth edition was completed in October 2000. This web page also presents price lists from different Greek folklore organizations, articles written by the manual author and other educational aids relevant to the understanding of Greek folk dance.
