Since the children are too young to choose to learn folk dancing, we must rightfully consider their teachers and parents as the customer.

TEACHING FOLK DANCE: PURPOSES INFORMING METHOD
Charles Kyriacou Member, Board of Trustees Greek Orthodox Youth Folk Dance Festival(FDF) Diocese of San Francisco(USA)
ABSTRACT: Let us first admit from the start that many people do not consider "folk dance" as a serious or even worthwhile endeavor. There are elements in modern society that consider folk dance "primitive" having been created by and for the "peasants" and not worthy of the allocation of scarce resources. Some of the reasons are that folk dance did not originate in the theatre and its purpose was not to entertain an audience but rather to serve a set of functions within a rural society of the past. Many modern urbanites seem to believe that the fact it served a rural society exempts folk dances from being able to serve them in any meaningful manner. In addition, and this is something folk dance teachers have some control over, the quality of a majority of folk dance performances compared to other theatrical dance presentations is considered by many today as substandard. In her article, "The Practice of and the Responsibility for Retention of Culture," Dr. Mary Coros observes:

Welcome to the
Square Dance - Washington State Dance On April 17, 1979, the square dance became the official Washington state dance. When the pioneers came west, they brought with them a dance called the quadrille, which means square in French. The pioneers liked the simpler term and so the square dance was born. The dance is known for its series of figures and footwork. Dancers are directed by a caller. It is easy to learn, a good form of exercise and fun. webmaster@squaredance-wa.org Thank you for visiting, we hope you will come back often as our site is updated monthly. Join the Ring

Georgian Folk Dances. It is because I had dedicated half of my life to Georgian folk dancing. For me, dancing was not just another extracurricular activity.

Georgian Folk Dances
"All the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill the history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill at dancing" said Moliere once. Havelock Ellis remarked that "Dancing is the loftiest, most moving, the most beautiful of the arts, because it is no mere translation or abstraction from life: IT IS LIFE ITSELF!" Still others believe that "Any problem in the world can be solved by dancing." This may sound a little overbearing, but I am certain that dancing brings happiness and peace to the soul for at least the longevity of the performance. Why? Because, it is "the only art form where the artist is also the medium of expression." You may wonder why do I make such strong statements about dancing. It is because I had dedicated half of my life to Georgian Folk dancing. For me, dancing was not just another extracurricular activity. It was my life. I strongly believed that I was born to dance. Unfortunately, life took me away from a dancing career. However, the love of dancing, especially Georgian Folk Dancing, still remains in my heart. Now, without much more ado, I would like to introduce to you the art of Georgian Folk dancing. These breathtaking and absolutely awesome dances represent a live history book expressing the centuries of Georgian art, culture, and tradition. Georgian Folk dances are not very famous around the world, but their magnificence and the beauty cannot be forgotten by anyone who sees it. Many times have Georgian dance groups, whether professional or amateur, mesmerized the world with the beauty. The beautiful costumes blend history and art in one single harmony. This, coupled with at times rough and technical movements, leaves the audience in total awe. Georgian Folk dances give immense pleasure to not only the audience, but to the dancers also. As a former dancer, I can say that every time I danced, I felt as free as a bird. At those moments, I knew that dancing could save the world.

(for more information visit http://www.folktours.com Dances Our great leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk has explained through one of his maxims that "The basic principle of the Republic of Turkey is culture". We believe that folk culture is a cornerstone for our natural cohesion and unity. An overall development on various fields of economic and social life can only be achieve through education and culture. Cultural values that reflect our national pride and aesthetic values are very important. We can as a stable society find our spiritual, physical and aesthetic needs from the values of Turkish folk culture. The unusual wealth and variety of Turkish folk music and dance attracts the attention of people from all over the world. Many of the melodies and movements have very ancient origins stemming from the many different aspects of Turkish culture that form the background of modern Turkey. Every district has its own local tunes, songs and dances. There is some special song or dance for every event of rural life. A birth or a wedding, the death of a loved one, sowing the field and harvesting the crops or leading the flocks to water. Some of the songs and dances have to do with a particular craft or work, some have fertility or good luck as a theme, while others express the timeless feelings of a man, joy and sadness, the longing of an exile for his home and homeland, love and affection for the beloved.
