    Introduction
    ~~~No experience or partner is necessary!~~~ Folk Dancing is excellent for pleasurable fitness and a friendly sociable atmosphere. International Folk Dancing is very family oriented. Anyone from 5 to 90+ years of age can (and do!) participate and enjoy themselves. Canberra is Australia's National Capital, located about 300 km southwest of Sydney and about 100 km inland from the east coast.  It is a very beautiful city of approximately 300,000 people, with lots of bush and parks surrounding it and a large lake at its centre. We have a temperate climate with hot summers and frosts in winter. This means lots of blossoms and flowering bulbs in spring and gloriously coloured leaves on the trees in autumn.  One of our main festivals is Floriade, which is held during September/October.  There are spectacular displays of flowers and lots of accompanying artistic events. Canberra also hosts the National Folk Festival which runs for five days over Easter, every year. Approximately 40,000 people attend.
My interest is in participatory dancing, although you will also find some links here to organizations that promote or perform folk dancing, and also to a few musical bands that play for dances.     Rupert Brooke, The Soldier England may be a tiny rain-sodden speck off the coast of Northern Europe but she has a unique cultural tradition. The concept of England as a multicultural society is nothing new. We have been one since the Romans came, and it is this very cultural diversity that gives us such a rich and varied heritage. English culture is a living tradition and successive generations of English folk have been proud to embrace their cultural heritage. Such quintessentially English sights as Morris Dancers performing outside a village pub on long summer evenings are testament to this. Many organizations are preserving the past, our goal is to preserve the present. We have embarked on an ongoing project to record as much contemporary English Folk Dance music as possible, to make it as widely available as we can, and to promote the dance-forms wherever the opportunity arises.
