PETER BRUNTNELL
Played Out
FREE AUTOGRAPHED BOOKLETS! LIMITED SUPPLY!
Gathering tunes from past albums, British troubadour Peter Bruntnell offers heart rending acoustic renditions of favorite numbers, performing with the sole and subtly stunning accompaniment of James Walbourne on guitar, mandolin and piano. As Mark Whitfield of Americana UK notes, "... the sombre melancholy of 'Ends of the Earth' is as crushing as ever, while 'By the Time My Head Gets to Phoenix' sounds as refreshingly driven as it did when you first heard it five years back... 'Played Out' is as fine a sounding collection of chin quiveringly sparse country-rock as you're likely to hear this year. " Track Listing: How You Are ...

Assisted by the ghostly viola and backing vocals of the Walkabouts' Anne-Marie Ruljancich, the smooth stand-up bass of Joel Phelps/Neko Case sideman Bill Herzog and the elegantly brushed drumming of Kevin Warner, this glittering cast of indie-Americana luminaries layers a lilting sonic tapestry. THE BLUEGRASS MUSIC PAGE
(Note of 5/18/97: I apologize to you that this page has not been updated in almost two years. I am in the process of doing something about that, and hope to have an update online in approximately two weeks.) Back in 1973, I was driving around the Monterey Peninsula with the radio tuned to the "hip" station in Carmel, when suddenly a very different sort of music came on. Segued between CSNY and James Taylor by this normally album-oriented-folk-rock station was banjo music , kind of like the theme song to the Beverly Hillbillies TV show. I didn't know what it was or who it was, but I nearly drove off Highway 68 into the trees when I heard it. I called the station to ask who it was. They told me it was bluegrass music by the Osborne Brothers. Since then, I've played bass in bluegrass bands, hosted a bluegrass radio show, co-founded The Santa Cruz Bluegrass Society , gone to Banjo Camp (twice), told my share of banjo jokes, and even jammed with a bluegrass band in Ireland.

A Brief History of Bluegrass Music Bill Monroe
The Scottish-Irish music of southern Appalachia was a powerful form of entertainment as folks gathered in the evenings to dance and socialize. In the first half of the twentieth century, talented families of musicians were getting air-time on radio stations, and this simple form of acoustic music was gaining in popularity. The lure of fame and fortune started to transform the music as the use of electric instruments became popular on the airwaves. Families and teams began to fragment as members took different directions. There were those who insisted on maintaining the traditional sound. Chief among them was Bill Monroe, who's tireless effort and soaring popularity brought the pure form of country music to millions of people. As modern country music began to take shape, Bill Monroe and the "Bluegrass Boys" defined the intense high-pitched sound of modern bluegrass. Bluegrass music continues to evolve as it finds a niche in urban settings, but the traditional instrumentation (fiddle, bass fiddle, acoustic guitar, 5-string banjo, mandolin, and eventually dobro) remains the same.

The traditional music here is split into 22 different songbooks or tune-books, each dedicated to a particular type of traditional folk or roots music. There are musical scores with chords from which you can print sheet music and lyrics, there are also MIDI files to play so you can hear what the tunes sound like. The MIDIS play the melody on the left channel and a simple chord and bass accompaniment on the right. These should be suitable for those musicians who prefer to learn by ear. The tune-books and songbook currently available are:-
Bluegrass music tune-book and songbook Around 250 traditional bluegrass songs and tunes commonly performed in this style. These tunes and songs are mostly American folk or roots pieces including some sacred and inspirational songs. They include many numbers which are popular and often heard in bluegrass jam sessions and performances. The bluegrass style is characterized by fast tempo with an emphasis on the five string banjo and harmony singing. Bill Munroe and Flatt and Scruggs are often credited with originating this style. Also on this site is a mirror of the Bluegrass South East web site which covers bluegrass related events and news for South East England, here you will also find the Carter Family Song book
