Background
The melodic range can be broadened with the addition of metal keywork. Four keys (short F, G#, Bb and Eb) are needed to produce a fully chromatic instrument. Two more keys (long F and high C) improve access to accidentals, and two more keys (low C and C#) can be added to extend the range down to middle C. Top
Playing
Without a relaxed playing position, tension can develop in the hands, wrists, and shoulders, possibly leading to injury. An ideal playing posture is one that allows you to do all of the following, without tension or strain:
  • stand or sit up straight maintain a comfortable, relaxed, and yet secure hold on the instrument free your fingers from having to just hold the pipe, allowing them to play music! blow a directed, focused stream of air maximize the use of your breath
  • After playing, remove excess moisture by swabbing the pipe with a soft lint-free cloth on a slotted stick or cleaning rod. A recorder swab may also be used. Occasionally, swab the inside and wipe the outside with a cloth moistened with almond oil or clarinet bore oil. Be careful not to get any oil on the keypad areas if your flute has keys, as it may gum up the works. Cork grease may be used on the joints when dry. Prevent cracking by avoiding sudden changes in temperature, excessive dryness, and heat sources such as a radiator or sunlight. Top

Harrington Neolithic flutes carved from the hollow wing bones of red-crowned cranes (Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology of Henan Province) [LARGER IMAGE] Chinese scholars have recovered six bone flutes dating from 8,000 to 9,000 years ago, the world's oldest complete, playable, multinote musical instruments. Researchers from the Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology of Henan Province in Zhengzhou found the flutes, crafted from the hollow ulnae (wing bones) of red-crowned crane, among fragments of 30 others at the Neolithic (ca. 8000-2000 B.C.) site of Jiahu in central Henan Province. The best preserved of the flutes, which are up to eight inches long and have between five and eight holes, has been played and analyzed; its tonal scale is remarkably similar to the Western eight-note, do-re-mi scale. "Here you have hard and fast evidence that the Chinese were not just making [one-note] whistles 8,000 years ago, but were capable of making instruments that produced a series of sounds," says Jenny So, curator of ancient Chinese art at the Freer-Sackler Galleries in Washington, which will present an exhibition "Music in the Age of Confucius," between April 28 and September 17, 2000. Chinese researchers obtained 20 radiocarbon dates from charcoal, plant ash, and human bone found in association with the flutes. Garman Harbottle, a chemist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory who helped analyze results of the dating, says he is encouraging Chinese researchers to date the flutes directly using some of the fragments.

Flute are usually made of silver or silver alloy, but can also be made of gold or even platinum. Some flutes are still made of wood, which produces a softer sound. Other types of flutes include the piccolo, alto flute, bass flute, and contrabass flute. The piccolo is a small flute that plays an octave (eight notes) higher than the flute. Most piccolo players start on the flute and continue to double on the flute. The alto flute is a larger flute that plays five notes lower, in F. Sound is produced by blowing across the tone hole of the flute, like blowing across the top of a bottle. The keys on the flute allow you to change pitch. Almost anyone can make a sound on the flute.
    History
    Top of page
The early history of the flute is largely unknown, but most historians agree that it is one of othe oldest musical instruments and that it orginiated somewhere in Central Asia. Members of the early flute family were held either forward or to the side. The first evidenced of a transverse (held to the side) is found in artwork dating back to 200 BC. The flute eventually found its way to Germany, where its use became common by the 12th century. Its most popular usage during taht time was for military music. Flutes had only tone holes, without keys, until the late 1600's, when the Baroque flute was invented. It was made of wood, and had seven tone holes and one key for the little finger. It was built in three sections instead of one piece. This helped intonation because the space between the sections could be adjusted. With these improvements, the flute became a regular member of the orchestra and rapidly increased in popularity.

Bass flutes are available from a number of makers, including Eva Kingma Gemeinhardt and Emerson . The modern bass flute in C (not to be confused with the Renaissance or Baroque-era "bass flute" pitched in G - the counterpart of the modern alto flute) is usually made with a "J"-shaped head joint, which brings the embouchure hole within reach. The bass flute sounds one octave below the C concert flute, with range down to the second-space C (bass clef). Some bass flutes are equipped with a B foot. Eva Kingma even makes highly-respected bass flutes with open holes and quarter tone keys The bass flute is most often found in flute choirs and other flute ensembles. Its timbre often does not carry, and doesn't compete well with other instruments in the same register (e.g., soprano clarinet, alto sax). However, when amplified, it is capable of beautiful and haunting melodies, and is sometimes used in jazz and in film scores.
Flutes lower than bass have now begun to proliferate. Eva Kingma produces a contrabass flute in G , pitched a fourth below the bass flute, as well as a full contrabass in C , pitched an octave below the bass flute.
