Flutes for Irish, Classical and Early Music
Terry's instruments are one-off craftsman-built instruments using the finest materials and a combination of traditional and modern techniques. They show the benefit of the vast and continuing research he has undertaken in Australia and in collections around the world. The most rigorous attention to tuning makes his instruments the most precise and vibrant available, and incorporation of new techniques makes them far more rewarding to play than the best of the originals. On the practical side, he has developed a new tuning slide which does not cause splitting as did the traditional slide, and new key shapes to improve ease of playing. Terry also makes replacement parts and carries out repairs and rebuilds for original instruments. This site includes extensive information on flute care, history, research, choosing a flute, fingering charts and links to other important flute resources.

Clive Catterall Flutes I produce flutes to play a variety of musical styles. Some are based closely on instruments in museum collections, and some are developed to my own design. However, they are all hand-made using the same tools and methods that were used by the eighteenth and nineteenth century flute-makers, and using materials with which they would have been familiar. In developing these instruments I have tried to apply my experience of eighteen years in the research and development of medical and scientific instruments to my lifelong interest in early musical instruments. However, the experience has been applied to the design and development , but the manufacture is uncompromisingly carried out in the traditional manner. Each flute is the product of careful hand-crafting to produce an instrument with an individual character. In order to be able to do this I have had to research the methods used by the original flutemakers. Some information is written down, some is recorded in victorian books on wood turning, and some I have had to reconstruct. The flutes themselves are, of course, made to be

Instruments based on Historical Models All of the instruments are based on specific examples from public museums, and my aim is to reproduce as faithfully as possible the playing qualities of the original when it was new. JJ Rippert Rippert worked in Paris at the start of the eighteenth century, and is noted in a number of contemporary documents as one of the most able instrument makers working at that time. Like Hotteterre and the other flutemakers working in this period, Rippert also made a variety of other wind instruments which were distributed across Europe. It appears that Rippert's instruments were used for a variety of styles of Baroque music, and so it is reasonable to assume that the Rippert flutes can be used for Italianate and Galant music as well as for French music. This includes the music of Hotteterre, Bach, Telemann, and Quantz. All of the surviving Rippert flutes are made in three pieces and play at a much lower pitch than the modern "Baroque Standard Pitch" of A'=415Hz. They produce a deep, powerful sound and can be played strongly in all registers. Raising the pitch to A'=415Hz would eliminate much of the charectaristic tone, and so I make these flutes at A'=392Hz, which is very close to the original pitch. The instrument on which this flute is based is held in the Glen collection of Glasgow university. It is a particularly fine example of Rippert's work, but unfortunately the embouchure has been altered at some time in the distant past. Luckily there are surviving examples if Rippert flutes in Paris and St Moritz that conform to the same acoustic design, and so I have used details from these instruments to restore the design of the Glasgow instrument.

EarthRhythms flutes, instruments and artifacts- .... According to Webster's New World Dictionary.... Artifact: (noun) Any object made by human work. Being hand-made by individuals, there are no two items exactly alike. There may be variations in wood grain and color, beads, feathers, leather or other differences between items of the same kind. There can be something in the wood, feather, bead, or other material that can be thought of by one as an "imperfection", but by another as a unique and desireable characteristic. These may not appear on the screen of your computer depending upon many things, such as resolution of your monitor and which browser you are using, what your software default settings are, etc. An item that is imaged on a page at Earthrhythms' website generally is a good representative of that kind of instrument and not necessarily the actual item you will receive. Sound
First something about sound. If you put your finger gently on a loudspeaker you will feel it vibrate - if it is playing a low note loudly you can see it moving. When it moves forwards, it compresses the air next to it, which raises its pressure. Some of this air flows outwards, compressing the next layer of air. The disturbance in the air spreads out as a travelling sound wave. Ultimately this sound wave causes a very tiny vibration in your eardrum - but that's another story.
Frequency
Woodwind Instruments
Woodwind instruments have a long, thin column of air. The lowest note is played with all the tone holes closed, when the column is longest. The column is shortened by opening up holes successively, starting from the open end. At the other end there is something that controls air flow: an air jet for the flute family and cane reeds for other woodwinds. We shall look at these elements in turn. The air column. A sound wave can travel down the tube, reflect at one end and come back. It can then reflect at the other end and start over again. For a note in the lowest register of the flute, the round trip constitutes one cycle of the vibration. (In the lowest register of clarinets, two round trips are required: see Flutes vs clarinets ). The longer the tube, the longer the time taken for the round trip, and so the lower the frequency. In woodwind instruments, the effective length is changed by opening and closing finger- holes or keyholes along the side. This is the way pitch is changed within the same register of the instrument: all holes closed gives the lowest note, and opening the holes successively from the bottom end gives a chromatic scale. (The use of simple and cross-fingerings to change the length of the standing wave is discussed in much more detail and with specific examples in

http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/~jw/flutes.v.clarinets.html
Flutes vs Clarinets
This page explains some of the different features of sound waves in flutes and clarinets in terms of their acoustic impedance . An introduction to the woodwind family (and to sound waves) is given in How Do Woodwind Instruments Work? The wave patterns in flutes, clarinets, oboes etc are explained on the page Pipes and harmonics The flute is a nearly cylindrical instrument which is open to the outside air at both ends. The clarinet is a nearly cylindrical instrument which is open to the outside air at the bell, but closed by the player's mouth at the other end. The two instruments are of approximately similar length. Well, let's pull the bell off the clarinet so that it is more nearly a cylinder (it doesn't make a huge difference to the sound) and say that the clarinet is a bit shorter than the flute. The bore of the clarinet is a bit smaller than that of the flute, but this difference is not important to the argument here. The graph below is the measured impedance of a simple cylindrical tube of length 597 mm. This curve looks reasonably similar to the measured impedance of a flute with all the holes closed (Open a new window for flute lowest note response curve ). This curve also looks reasonably similar to the measured impedance of a clarinet with all the holes closed (Open a

56. Ormiston Flutes - Manufacture And Supply Of Musical Instruments
The appearance, playing quality and reliability of a flute are of great importanceto me, and precision is the key element in my making of the instruments.
http://www.ormistonflutes.fsnet.co.uk/
I make keyed and unkeyed wooden flutes. Welcome to my website. There are now some sound samples available on the website. See after the table of prices for details. The photograph shows, from the top:- an 8 keyed flute in C, fully chromatic; an unkeyed flute in C; an unkeyed flute in D; a 5 keyed flute in D. There is a choice of wood - African Blackwood, Rosewood or Boxwood. African Blackwood is certainly the most-preferred choice, as much for its tone as for its stability. I have been buying my Blackwood direct from Africa for some years now and I am very happy with the quality and price. I also like the idea of the profit going directly to the source rather than to some middle-man. The timber lies in the workshop for at least five years, over which time it is moved on in stages until it is made into a finished flute. After each machining stage it is left to settle for another year. The appearance, playing quality and reliability of a flute are of great importance to me, and 'precision' is the key element in my making of the instruments. All my flutes have a tuning slide and headcork tuner assembly in the headjoint, and all ferrules and keys are made from sterling silver (925). All ferrules are hallmarked with the Edinburgh hallmark and each wooden piece of the flute is stamped 'Ormiston', with the headjoint bearing the instrument number. Cases Each instrument is supplied in a velvet-lined wooden case with solid brass fittings and accompanied with instructions on how best to care for it.
