Musical Instruments Easier - Musical instruments are devices on which you can play music. Harder - Most musical instruments have a string, a reed (a thin piece of wood or metal), or some other device that vibrates creating sound waves. Musical sound or tone is made when air vibrates a certain number of times a second. The sound waves must be contained in some fashion so that the instrument player can control the pitch, loudness, duration, and quality of the tone produced. Musical instruments can be grouped in five major classes: (1) stringed instruments, (2) wind instruments, (3) percussion instruments, (4) keyboard instruments, and (5) electronic instruments.

Native American Musical Instruments
Singing is at the center of much traditional Native American (now also known as "First Nations" or "First People") music. There are, however, several instruments that are integral to the music, often as accompaniment. Drums, rattles, and flutes are the most common traditional instruments played, but certain peoples have distinct instrumental traditions and legends related to their instruments. Locally found material is used to make these instruments. The following is a brief overview of the instruments.
Drums
Simple skin drum These drums are used in the central area east of the Rockies and in the Northern Plains. They can consist of a singled tanned skin tied to four stakes that are planted in the ground or held by four people as another strikes it.
Frame drum A frame drum maker stretches cow, elk, horse, or deer hide tightly over a frame, sews it together, and adds a carrying handle to the frame. These drums are usually about four inches deep and as much as 30 inches in diameter. Some two-head and single-head drums are made from sections of hollowed-out logs (called log drums).
Water drum The Native American water drum sounds different from any other kind of drum. It is made in several ways, including using an iron kettle as the body. It is partially filled with water, and tanned buckskin is stretched over it. The drums are played with a thin drumstick that has a loop on the end. Some groups have also made water drums from hollow logs.

What Are Drumming Circles? Our Store Annex Opportunity Our Drums, ... Order Form
Drumming at Cedar Mountain Drums
What is drumming all about? Hearing our mother's heartbeat, safe within the womb, was our first experience of music two rhythms drumming together to create a song, as unique as each of us as universal and ageless as eternity. Everyone innately knows how to go about drumming! There is no "right" or "wrong" way to express yourself drumming. In natural law, chaos is followed by order, but in our cities, fear and chaos rule. We lock our doors, are afraid to venture out of our homes, and there is a deep longing that is unfulfilled. In our drum store, the low resonance of an elk drum, or the patterned drumming of an African djembe often brings tears. This spiritual hunger is unmet in most that haven't a clue that the deep rhythms inside them are longing for expression. There is a hunger for community. There is a deep longing to be a part of a whole to experience magic. What is the opportunity? In traditional cultures, music and dance and

http://www.sbgmusic.com/html/teacher/reference/instruments/woodwind.html
Woodwind Instruments
In the orchestras of Western art music, there are four main groups of instruments: strings, percussion, brass, and woodwinds. Woodwinds often play together with all the other instruments of the orchestra, but they also get to play solos in the orchestra, unlike most of the string players. Concert bands have woodwinds, brass, and percussion only, no strings.
Most woodwind instruments are tubes that are (or were long ago) made from wood, and players blow their "wind," or breath, into them to make sounds. Some woodwinds are conical, or cone-shaped—the tube starts small and gets bigger along the way to the end. Other woodwinds are cylindrical, or cylinder-shaped—the size of the tube stays about the same from one end to the other, like a paper-towel tube.
Woodwind instruments make sounds in different ways. Five families of instruments make up the woodwind section: flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, and bassoon. Here is a look at each family and how its instruments produce sound.
The Flute Family
People have enjoyed playing the flute for at least 5,000 years. Most modern flutes are made of metal because metal helps them to sound louder in today’s big concert halls. Sound is produced on a flute the same way it is on a whistle. When the player’s breath hits the hole on the top of the mouthpiece of the flute, the air stream splits in two and makes a whistling sound. Flute players need to be able to hold a lot of air in their lungs. They also need to control the escape of all that air. This is called "breath control." It takes good breath control to play the flute.

28. About The Artist
My work is traditional in the sense that the instruments are based on traditional tribal tunings, and are constructed using traditional techniques. Made in Arlee, Montana.
http://www.aoflutes.com/abtartst2.htm
Amon Olorin Flutes was founded in 1986 by myself and my wife Anja Light. We live and work on a wooded hilltop near Arlee, Montana, a small town on the Flathead Reservation of Western Montana. The name for our business comes from the work of J.R.R. Tolkien"Amon" means hill and "Olorin" is vision or dream made manifest. Our small company bears this name in appreciation for the piece of our Earth Mother that sustains and inspires us. Our business specializes in the handcrafting, art, and music of the Native American Flute. It represents not only a rebirth of an ancient but obscure tradition, but also a contemporary refinement of traditional flute-making techniques.
My initial interest in obtaining an Indian flute resulted from a performance by Lakota artist, storyteller, and author Tony Shearer.
The shop in Winter
Tony Shearer
The beautiful, haunting melodies produced by his 130-year-old cedar flute awakened an intense and compelling interest to experience for myself the personal enrichment so evident in Tony's work with this ancient instrument. Because at the time such flutes were very rare, most being museum pieces, I concluded that the only realistic way to obtain one was to make it myself, if indeed this was possible. Through research, trial-and-error (mostly error), and the incredible gift of being able to briefly study Tony's venerable "Lady", I created my first five-hole Lakota flute during the winter of 1985-86.

The Shakuhachi flute is Japan's quintessential Zen music instrument. The blowing edge and the tapered bore of root end bamboo gives the shakuhachi its unique haunting sound quality.
I am primarily a theater artist and musician who had a previous life as a fine art painter. I started making shakuhachi for two reasons - to use theatrically and musically with my group, SLANT. We were composing an experimental Asian American music score called Buddah Blues and I needed shakuhachi of different lengths to play. I searched around and could not afford what was available. More importantly, what was available didn't have the sound I was looking for. Therefore, by neccessity, I began on my journey to find that special shakuhachi sound. My guiding mantra was, "I'll know it when I hear it." After about a year of making and experimenting, I discovered that producing a well playing shakuhachi meant adding or subtracting material from the bore so that each note will play with a wide range of dynamics. After another year or so, I realized that if I left the bores as natural as possible, the individual "voice" of the flute would be revealed and that this was a desirable trait of my favorite flutes. Shakuhachi are like people, each one begs to be heard as an individual. This is what guides me in the workshop. Read about the History
