Fluorite is a mineral with a veritable bouquet of brilliant colors Fluorite is well known and prized for its glassy luster and rich variety of colors. The range of common colors for fluorite starting from the hallmark color purple, then blue, green, yellow, colorless, brown, pink, black and reddish orange is amazing and is only rivaled in color range by quartz Intermediate pastels between the previously mentioned colors are also possible. It is easy to see why fluorite earns the reputation as "The Most Colorful Mineral in the World" The many colors of fluorite are truly wonderful. The rich purple color is by far fluorite's most famous and popular color. It easily competes with the beautiful purple of amethyst . Often specimens of fluorite and amethyst with similar shades of purple are used in mineral identification classes to illustrate the folly of using color as the sole means to identify minerals. The blue, green and yellow varieties of fluorite are also deeply colored, popular and attractive. The colorless variety is not as well received as the colored varieties, but their rarity still makes them sought after by collectors. A brown variety found in Ohio and elsewhere has a distinctive iridescence that improves an otherwise poor color for fluorite. The rarer colors of pink, reddish orange (rose) and even black are usually very attractive and in demand.

Chart 2: Organizational amalgamation of the dental and industrial communities and their scientific journals. The US perspective. Dental organizations Industrial organizations Governmental bodies References Introduction In spite of the intense debate about amalgam and other dental materials in Scandinavia, USA and other countries, connections between the dental community and the manufacturers of dental materials has not been on the agenda. The industries strong urge for a positive image of their products and the dental professions strong defense of amalgam and other dental materials warrants such an investigation. True understanding of the defensive position of the dental community in the dental materials issue can not be reached without investigating the organizational amalgamation of the dental and industrial communities. In order to get a reference in a closely related field the organizational connection between two international medical organizations and the pharmaceutical industry has been investigated.

Fluoride: Friend or Foe?
by David De Santo
by David De Santo
For over half a century the government has been telling the public that fluoride is safe and beneficial. It is supposed to reduce cavities; manufacturers add it to toothpaste, and municipalities to their water supplies. Supposedly the only ones who opposed fluoridation were a few lunatics on the far right alleging a Communist conspiracy. Now it seems the left is concerned about it as well. The Green Party, which is hardly an advocate of laissez faire, has come out solidly against mandatory fluoridation, and for good reason. The Greens point out what more mainstream opponents of fluoridation have know for years, that tooth decay is caused by poor dental hygiene and high consumption of refined sugar products. In fact, it may even give people a false sense of security, by making them feel that they can neglect good dental hygiene in lieu of fluoride. In fact nothing cold be further from the truth. To add any type of substance to our water supply to medicate everyone, with the belief that it will help a few, is patently unethical. What’s even worse is the wealth of information that cites the massive health risks involved in conjunction with using this substance. Unless it can be deemed safe, it should not be added to the water supply.

For the past 50 years the US public has been very convincingly persuaded to ignore the fluoride issue, but the serious facts about this issue keep repeating, and the situation appears to be degrading.
The growing widespread concern over public apathy, rising health concerns, and the apparent stupidity of our school children keeps mounting. This fluoride issue is offered as one of several possible important answers to that problem.
THE HALOGENS:
The Halogen family consists of five chemical elements: Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine and Astatine. (Chlorine and Fluorine are chief ingredients of the CFC's, that are causing the current controversy with the ozone holes.)
Depending upon use and dosage, the Halogens have a varying effect on the human mind, nervous system and metabolism. For example one of the most popular current hospital anesthetics, "Halothane", contains Fluorine, Chlorine, and Bromine.

A common obstacle one runs into when trying to inform others of the dangers of a product is being told you are not an "expert". This can, however, be used to one's advantage if one happens to find an "expert" who verifies your own views on the benefits of natural versus chemical approaches to health. My background is that of a Chemical Engineer, having earned my B.A.Sc. from the University of British Columbia in 1984. When it comes to chemistry I can say that I am an "expert" in this area due to studying it full time for over 10 years.

Sometimes the discoloration is brown. If you haven't seen this on people's teeth in your neighborhood, your water is probably not fluoridated. It's called dental fluorosis and it's caused by ingesting too many fluoride compounds (usually called simply "fluoride") while the teeth develop. Someone with this mottling of the enamel could also have suffered bone damage or skeletal fluorosis And a child with these problems will have them forever because fluorosis is irreversible. How could it be that after fluoride has been promoted for 50 years as a benefit to every one of us, it turns out to be a bad idea? Haven't the people who question fluoridation been cranks and paranoids? Today, those lining up against fluoride in tap water and toothpaste include reputable medical and dental researchers and doctors, dentists, public health officials and the governments of most European countries including Sweden, the Netherlands, France and Germany.

NATIONAL TREASURY EMPLOYEES UNION CHAPTER 280
BEFORE THE SUBCOMMITTEE ON WILDLIFE, FISHERIES AND DRINKING WATER
UNITED STATES SENATE
JUNE 29, 2000
Good morning Mr. Chairman and Members of the Subcommittee. I appreciate the opportunity to appear before this Subcommittee to present the views of the union, of which I am a Vice-President, on the subject of fluoridation of public water supplies.
Our union is comprised of and represents the professional employees at the headquarters location of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington D.C. Our members include toxicologists, biologists, chemists, engineers, lawyers and others defined by law as "professionals." The work we do includes evaluation of toxicity, exposure and economic information for managements use in formulating public health and environmental protection policy.
I am not here as a representative of EPA, but rather as a representative of EPA headquarters professional employees, through their duly elected labor union. The union first got involved in this issue in 1985 as a matter of professional ethics. In 1997 we most recently voted to oppose fluoridation. Our opposition has strengthened since then.

What is fluoride Fluoride is a natural compound that protects teeth from cavities. Many communities in Canada add fluoride to the local water supply. It’s also in toothpastes and mouthwashes. Children who start using products with fluoride from an early age have fewer cavities than those who don’t. How does fluoride work Fluoride helps prevent cavities and decay by coming in direct contact with the tooth enamel (the outside of the tooth). But, if you consume fluoride from sources such as drinking water, it gets absorbed in your bloodstream. Then it becomes part of the enamel on the inside of the tooth. If too much fluoride gets into the inside of the tooth, it can cause a condition called fluorosis.

Our union is comprised of and represents the approximately 1500 scientists, lawyers, engineers and other professional employees at EPA Headquarters here in Washington, D.C. The union first became interested in this issue rather by accident. Like most Americans, including many physicians and dentists, most of our members had thought that fluoride's only effects were beneficial - reductions in tooth decay, etc. We too believed assurances of safety and effectiveness of water fluoridation. Then, as EPA was engaged in revising its drinking water standard for fluoride in 1985, an employee came to the union with a complaint: he said he was being forced to write into the regulation a statement to the effect that EPA thought it was alright for children to have "funky" teeth. It was OK, EPA said, because it considered that condition to be only a

What is fluoride?
The fluoride ion comes from the element fluorine. Fluoride, either applied topically to erupted teeth, or ingested orally (called systemic fluoride) during tooth development, helps to prevent tooth decay, strengthen tooth enamel, and reduce the harmful effects of plaque. Fluoride also makes the entire tooth structure more resistant to decay and promotes remineralization, which aids in repairing early decay before the damage is even visible. Where is fluoride found? Topical Fluoride
  • found in products containing strong concentrations of fluoride (i.e., toothpastes, mouthrinses) fluoridated varnishes and/or gels either topically applied by a dentist or other oral health professional, or prescribed as an at-home regimen (particularly for persons with a high risk of dental caries)
Systemic Fluoride
  • public and private water supplies soft drinks teas as dietary supplements some bottled water supplies
Once ingested, systemic fluoride is absorbed via the gastrointestinal tract and distributed and deposited throughout the body via the blood supply.

Facts About Fluoride
Cavities used to be a fact of life. But over the past few decades, tooth decay has been reduced dramatically. The key reason: fluoride Research has shown that fluoride reduces cavities in both children and adults. It also helps repair the early stages of tooth decay even before the decay becomes visible. Many people continue to be misinformed about fluoride and fluoridation. That is unfortunate. Fluoride is like any other natural nutrient; it is safe and effective when used appropriately. "Fluoride is needed throughout the lifespan to prevent and control tooth decay. Better directed use of fluoride can lead to considerable savings in public and private resources without compromising the tremendous advances we've made in reducing tooth decay."
Fluoride: Nature's Cavity Fighter
Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in almost all foods and water supplies. The fluoride ion comes from the element fluorine. Fluorine, the 13th most abundant element in the earth's crust, is never encountered in its free state in nature. It exists only in combination with other elements as a fluoride compound. Fluoride compounds are naturally present in water, soil, air, and in most foods. Fluoride is effective in preventing and reversing the early signs of dental caries (tooth decay). Researchers have shown that there are several ways through which fluoride achieves its decay-preventive effects.

Fluoride acids are among the most corrosive chemicals known. The fluoridation chemicals used in public water supplies are waste products of the phosphate fertilizer industry . If the industry wasn't permitted to dump this waste product into our drinking water, they'd have to dispose of it as hazardous waste In some places (like Philadelphia), Zinc Orthophosphate (which is "slightly toxic" if ingested) is added to the water to counteract the corrosive effects of the fluoride. Fluorides are considered poisons in Pennsylvania law. Fluoride exposure has been linked to many health problems , including hip fractures neurological damage ADD/ADHD lead poisoning ... bone cancer and other rare forms of cancer There have been several attempts in recent years to fluoridate specific communities in Pennsylvania (where 54% of the public is already mass medicated with fluoridated drinking water).
