Atomic Number: Atomic Radius: 70.9 pm Atomic Symbol: F Melting Point: -219.67 ºC Atomic Weight: Boiling Point: -188.12 ºC Electron Configuration: [He]2s Oxidation States:
History
(L. and Fr. fluere : flow or flux) In 1529, Georigius Agricola described the use of fluorspar as a flux, and as early as 1670 Schwandhard found that glass was etched when exposed to fluorspar treated with acid. Scheele and many later investigators, including Davy, Gay-Lussac, Lavoisier, and Thenard, experimented with hydrofluoric acid, some experiments ending tragically. The element was finally isolated in 1866 by Moissan after nearly 74 years of continuous effort.
Properties
Fluorine is the most electronegative and reactive of all elements. It is a pale yellow, corrosive gas, which reacts with most organic and inorganic substances. Finely divided metals, glass, ceramics, carbon, and even water burn in fluorine with a bright flame. Until World War II, there was no commercial production of elemental fluorine. The nuclear bomb project and nuclear energy applications, however, made it necessary to produce large quantities.
Uses
Fluorine and its compounds are used in producing uranium (from the hexafluoride) and more than 100 commercial fluorochemicals, including many high-temperature plastics. Hydrofluoric acid etches glass of light bulbs. Fluorochlorohydrocarbons are extensively used in air conditioning and refrigeration.

Adverse Health Effects Are Linked To Fluoride
FACT. . .
Fluoride Is A Carcinogen Fluoride was found to be an equivocal carcinogen by the National Cancer Institute Toxicological Program. Further studies by the New Jersey Department of Health have now confirmed a 6.9 fold increase in bone cancer in young males. Earlier studies had found a 5% increase in all types of cancers in fluoridated communities. FACT. . .
Fluoride Increases Hip Fractures Drinking fluoridated water will double the number of hip fractures for both older men and women. Extremely low levels of water fluoridation 0.1 ppm still produced statistically significant increased hip fractures. (Bordeaux Study JAMA 1994) FACT. . .
Fluoride Increases Infertility Infertility in women was found to increase with water fluoridation. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) scientists reported a close correlation between decreasing total fertility rates in women between ages of 10 and 49, and increasing fluoride levels. They also reported that a review of all of the animal studies done to date shows that fluoride adversely affects fertility in most animal species.

Dare To Think
. . . a message about fluoride
by Darlene Sherrell
Just in time for Children's Dental Health Month, (February 1997) the Reader's Digest published HOW HONEST ARE DENTISTS?, by William Ecenbarger, winner of the George Polk Award for Investigative Journalism. The article revealed that in 28 states dentists examined the same set of x-rays and the same set of pearly whites, and then recommended widely differing treatments, with price tags to match: $500.00 to $29,850.00. They didn't seem to know what to do or how much to charge for doing it. "I got 50 opinions," Ecenbarger writes, "and I am not comforted." This article, however, barely scratches the surface with regard to dishonesty. For decades, the American Dental Association has worked hand in glove with industry to cover up the toxic properties of fluoride, causing untold pain and suffering among an unsuspecting population urged to trust their dentists, trust their government, trust their political leaders, no matter what. In the early 1930s, when American Dentistry was becoming aware of the damage fluoride can cause during the development of our children's teeth, there was a great call to remove the fluoride naturally present in water supplies. Communities in sixteen states had observed disfiguring stains and pits in their children's teeth. In 1940 the Journal of Dental Research contained a report describing a survey of the inhabitants of St. David, Arizona, where water supplies contained 1.6 to 4 parts per million of fluoride There was no apparent dental benefit from fluoride. In fact, more than half the people in all age groups over the age of twenty-three had artificial dentures. With this new awareness came fear.

A crack appears in the fluoride front
After surveying the growing evidence, a high-profile advocate has second thoughts about the safety of fluoride

By Michael Downey Special to The Toronto Star , April 25, 1999 Two years ago, parents in the United States began noticing the word "poison" on their toothpaste tubes. The reason: U.S. drug regulators were beginning to doubt the safety of fluoride, particularly to children, and demanded warnings on the labels. Health Canada has not followed the U.S. lead, although fluoride toothpaste here does carry a mild warning to avoid swallowing it. But attitudes toward fluoride in this country are also beginning to change. Dr. Hardy Limeback is a leading Canadian fluoride authority who is often cited by health officials in their defense of fluoridated water. He is also a long-standing consultant to the Canadian Dental Association and a professor of dentistry at the University of Toronto. But in an interview last week, he conceded that fluoride may be destroying our bones, our teeth and our overall health. Although he still believes fluoride in toothpaste is effective against tooth decay, he says it doesn't need to be added to our water and we may be taking unnecessary risks by doing so. "There is no point swallowing fluoridated water. The only benefit comes with direct contact with the teeth."

Should my breastfed baby be receiving vitamin or fluoride supplements?
Advertisements, family members and even health professionals often urge mothers to add “something” to baby's perfect diet of mother’s milk. According to La Leche League International’s comprehensive guidebook, T HE W OMANLY A RT OF B REASTFEEDING , if a breastfeeding mother is getting an adequate supply of vitamins in her diet, her milk will contain adequate nutrients in the perfect balance for her baby. If your baby is healthy and doing well, there is no need for vitamins, iron, or other supplements in the early months. Furthermore, many mothers have found that vitamin or fluoride supplements may cause fussiness or colic in their infants. By treating each mother and baby as a unique pair, unnecessary supplementation can often be avoided.

Chapter 1 : Worker risks weren't a priority
By Peter Eisler, USA TODAY In fact, Wolf, a medical director with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, had evidence of serious dangers. His staff had done classified studies at Harshaw's restricted "Area C" plant and found that concentrations of radioactive uranium dust in the air reached 200 times the safety limits of the day. Having alerted Harshaw to the problems, Wolf wanted workers' urine checked for signs of kidney damage. But company officials worried that the tests might alarm employees, so they asked that he come out first to allay any fears among the men. "It is easy to understand that extensive sample-taking of this character may cause (workers) to wonder about their health," Wolf's boss wrote to Harshaw executives just after the doctor's trip. "It was for this reason that Dr. Wolf (visited) to explain to them that all of our records indicated that no unusual hazard existed." Actually, the severe hazards already documented at Harshaw were getting worse.

What is Fluoride and How Does it Work?

Fluoride is formed when the natural element, fluorine, is dissolved in water. Fluoride is found naturally in most food, water, rocks and soil. In a fluoridated area, about one third of the adult fluoride intake comes from foods such as fish, meat, fruit, vegetables and eggs. The other two-thirds comes from drinking-water and toothpaste. Its specific function is to help teeth resist dental decay or cavities, and it may reverse the caries process once it's begun. When a baby's teeth are developing (before they erupt or appear in the mouth), the fluoride the baby swallows becomes part of the tooth's outer layer, the enamel. Teeth that incorporate fluoride during this crucial period are strengthened against cavities, because the fluoride makes the enamel more difficult for decay- producing acids to dissolve. After the teeth have erupted, fluoride in saliva not only inhibits tooth decay but also causes early cavities to remineralize. Many studies have shown that people who drink water containing the correct amount of fluoride have less decay. Fluoridation is a great way for everyone to have good teeth. Before fluoride was adjusted in our water supplies, a 12-year-old child would have about 8 permanent teeth affected by decay. By 1990, this had reduced to fewer than 2 permanent teeth.

Klearinghouse Water treatment chemicals contribute to Arsenic levels in drinking water Sun, 29 Oct 2000 George Glasser gtigerclaw@worldnet.att.net FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Oct. 29. 2000 From George Glasser, St. Petersburg, FL Fluoridation chemicals contain highest levels of Arsenic In an October 2000 Opflow article, "Treatment Chemicals Contribute to Arsenic Levels," the authors report that if the US Environmental Protection Agency Arsenic standard were set at three to five parts per billion, about ten percent of the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for Arsenic would be contributed by water treatment chemicals. They stated that 90% of the Arsenic contamination found in drinking water is attributable to fluorosilicic acid used in artificial fluoridation schemes. The EPA is lobbying Congress and the Senate to reduce Arsenic levels to three to five parts per billion. Many studies have concluded that chronic health effects due to low concentrations of Arsenic in the drinking water include prostate, skin, bladder, kidney, liver and lung cancers. The non-cancerous effects include skin pigmentation and keratosis (callous-like skin growths), gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, hormonal (e.g., diabetes ), haematological, (e.g., anaemia), pulmonary, neurological and immunological effects and damage to reproductive/developmental functions.

115. The Great Fluopride Scam: Viewzone

http://www.viewzone.com/fluoride.html
By James Donahue I was a child when fluoride, a by-produce from the manufacture of atomic bombs, was first introduced to the American people. Nobody told us where fluoride came from. All we knew is that it was a newly discovered chemical that would make our teeth extra hard and ward off cavities. When a free fluoride clinic was set up one summer in our school, all the kids in town lined up to have the bitter tasting stuff rubbed on their teeth. We were pretty gullible in those days. The period immediately following World War II was a time of scientific advancement. After the inventions of nylon, rayon, plastic and other marvelous products that replaced fabrics, rubber and steel during the war years, people were lulled into the belief that those balding men in white laboratory jackets could solve all of the problems of the world. The belief was so strong that we blindly accepted whatever a "scientist" told us. Nobody dreamed that we might be victims of fraud. My father was part of the magic. He worked as a chemical engineer for a factory that made a variety of products out of wheat and corn starch (including the brain-killing excitotoxin monosodium glutamate). He provided well and I consequently made regular visits to a dentist every summer. I knew well the agony of the dentist drill. It was nothing like the advanced water-cooled high-speed equipment used by modern dentists. Repairing a cavity doomed us to what seemed like hours of white-knuckle torture under the glaring lights of the dental chair, while a man with plastic rimmed glasses and bad breath bored his way through teeth (and bone?). Once the drilling was done, the dentist filled the hole he made with a hot metallic material that burned when it went in, and left a bad taste in your mouth.

The Story of Fluoridation
I t started as an observation, that soon took the shape of an idea. It ended, five decades later, as a scientific revolution that shot dentistry into the forefront of preventive medicine. This is the story of how dental science discovered-and ultimately proved to the world-that fluoride, a mineral found in rocks and soil, prevents tooth decay.Although dental caries remains a public health worry, it is no longer the unbridled problem it once was, thanks to fluoride.
A Mysterious Disorder In 1909 Dr. McKay (r) persuaded the Colorado State Dental Association to invite Dr. Green Vardiman Black (l), one of the nation's most eminent dental researchers, to attend 1909 convention where McKay's findings were to be presented. The two men began joint research and discovered other areas of the country where brown staining of teeth occured F A Fruitful Collaboration
M cKay's first big break came in 1909, when renowned dental researcher Dr. G.V. Black agreed to come to Colorado Springs and collaborate with him on the mysterious ailment. Black, who had previously scoffed that it was impossible such a disorder could go unreported in the dental literature, was lured West shortly after the Colorado Springs Dental Society conducted a study showing that almost 90 percent of the city's locally born children had signs of the brown stains. When Black arrived in the city, he too was shocked by the prevalence of Colorado Brown Stain in the mouths of native-born residents. He would write later:
