Garden Example: Flower Garden Description
: Cooler temperatures provide more colorful garden opportunities for students and teachers. Installed from seed or flats, flower gardens are an easy and fast solution to the otherwise labor intensive garden project. Layout : Creating a flowerbed is mostly a matter of taste, however, a few rules of thumb do apply. Always try and plant flowers in descending heights, this allows sufficient light and maximum visibility of color. Also, planting in rows provides more uniform irrigation. When possible, organic matter should be added for better moisture retention and nutrients. Irrigation : Furrows and flooding maximize water distribution throughout the bed. Established flowerbeds can be watered every 2 to 3 days, depending on temperatures and soil. Not every growing situation is the same. When at all possible, students should hand water. Timing : Generally after late October into fall. Plant material Marigolds Daisy Amaranth Pansies Portulaca Sunflower Snapdragon Alyssum Zinnia Depending on availability substitutions will inevitably be necessary.

Home Gardening: Flowers
Current Situation
Annuals and perennials spice the landscape with their colorful flowers and foliage. Beds of color provide brilliant accents against backgrounds of permanent plantings, soften man-made lines, and provide graceful transitions from one outdoor area to another. Flowers can be used to catch the eye, accent a view, frame a door, or just draw attention to their own blooms. This section of Home Gardening is divided into two areas:
  • Annual plants
Annual plants are practical in that they are versatile, sturdy, and inexpensive. They quickly yield color for a long season. Perennial plants
Perennial plants return year after year. They fit into many landscapes and can be used in borders, as accents, or as strong focal points. The foliage of many perennials is attractive during nonflowering seasons as well.

http://www.homemadesimple.com/outside/bountiful_bouquets.shtml
Imagine a vase overflowing with flower blossoms sitting on your dining or kitchen table. Picture the flowers being replaced each week with new, fresh, and different blooms. It's not a dream, it's a reality—and it doesn't have to cost much money when you have your own cut-flower garden. All summer, you can pluck beautiful flowers from your outside garden to bring indoors. Plus, you'll always have beautiful bouquets on hand to give to family and friends.
Laying the Land
Cut-flower gardens serve the sole purpose of growing flowers for bouquets. Start the gardening process by choosing a spot that gets full sun, has well-drained soil, and, if possible, faces southward. Since cut-flower gardens produce plants used primarily for cutting bouquets, you don't have to worry about following a particular structure or format—feel free to plant as you please.
However, if you want a more structured look to your garden and are planting against a wall or fence, try putting tall flowers (e.g., sunflowers, hollyhocks) in the rear of the garden, medium-sized flowers (e.g., snapdragons, dahlias) in the middle, and finish with the low-growing plants (e.g., alyssum, verbena) in front. If your bed will be viewed from all sides, you can plant tall flowers in the center, but follow the same gradual downward planting succession.
Pick Your Flowers
When it comes to planting flowers, you have lots of options. You can have fun creating indoor arrangements by planting an assortment of flowers in different colors, heights, and/or textures. And remember when planting that some types of flowers are a cut above others: They look great in bouquets, last longer in vases, and are perfect candidates for cut-flower gardens. Some cut-flower favorites are:

Flower Garden Fireplace Screen
Decorating With Style : Episode DWS-205

Preparing the Screen:
  • Trim down three sections of a picket fence to fit the height of the fireplace. Make sure that combined width of the panels, once they're hinged together, will completely cover the width of the fireplace.
  • Make sure the horizontal boards holding the fence together are secure, but don't let any nails show through to the front of the fence.
  • Spray or brush the panel with a light color paint as primer, and let it dry. Stamping and Painting:
  • Design Press stamps used in this segment have been discontinued. Create custom stamps from foam sheets available from most arts and crafts stores. Be sure to leave a handle for applying and removing stamp.
  • Roll up the hydrangea foam press (see Resources below), fasten it with a rubber band, and dip sections of the squared off end of it into several complementary colors of paint. Dab off any excess, and press on the fence in several overlapping areas.
