Exceptionally warm and summer-like spring weather this year has pushed many different garden plants into early growth and budding. In my garden this week, the yellow tree peony (Peonia lutea) bloomed, along with lilacs, a combination that seldom happens. (The lilacs usually complete their bloom before the peony opens.) One of the many delights of gardening happens when we observe new scenes unfolding in the familiar landscape. Mine this year is silky yellow peony petals with fragrant purple lilacs. Now's the time to map the potential locations for next year's hardy spring bulbs and look at garden displays of narcissus, tulips, and hyacinths. The later, large tulips (often seen in May) are in bloom in many gardens this week. Tall tulip 'White Triumphator' reached nearly 30 inches this year in the lower garden. Write down the bulbs you like with some potential sites for them; walk in gardens and look at spring now. You'll find that fall bulb catalogs for ordering arrive now, or come in early summer. Planning the spring garden makes sense now while you can see what's happening. If you wait until August to consider this gardening dimension, you'll have forgotten which flowers thrilled you now. In tulips I've appreciated the deep orange/purple feathered 'Princess Irene' and the sparkling white/yellow 'Sweetheart.'

Walking around the garden this week, I've noticed that the perennial and annual flowers need some mid-summer tweaking and boosting. The mature perennials and annuals set seeds and produce some brown leaves. Sneaky weeds move into the centers of plants. Three-foot daisies topple over on the asters. Now that the weather has cooled a bit, working in the flower garden offers distinct pleasure on a long evening. In my garden, I'll start by getting the stakes and twine for plants I didn't tie up earlier. My garden has a patch of clumping bamboo that's more valuable as a source of good, unobtrusive plant stakes than it is as a visual treat. With a handful of stakes and some green twine, I'll untangle and tie up some of the wobbly plants. Gooseneck loosestrife, a graceful late-bloomer with curved white flowers, frequently falls flat as it grows. (This plant, Lysimachia clethroides , isn't related to the troublesome purple loosestrife that's classified as a noxious weed in Washington state. That one is

A flower garden that sells
A flower garden is a beautiful addition to any home and lawn. However, what do you do with the flowers if you have an overflow or if you just don't want to see them die in the hot sun? Below are a few tips that I have put to use with my own garden that help me make money every year. bodyOffer(4439) #1 Sell your flowers at flea markets or fruit/vegetable stands. All over America fruit and vegetable stands dot the countryside, selling their wares. Why not offer to sell them flowers to pedal as well? It doesn't hurt to try and more often than not you will get a positive response! Or, if you live near the highway, why not set up a booth yourself? You will be surprised at the number of people who WILL buy fresh cut flowers or will be willing to pick their own! Flea markets are also a great way to rid yourself of unwanted flowers. Set up a booth for under five dollars and sell your flowers on the weekends to tourists. #2 Sell to local flower shops. If you deal in a variety of exotic or hot-demand flowers, why not check with local flower shops to see if you can provide them with a few flowers when needed? It is not a shot in the dark. More than likely you can under-cut their current suppliers and get them the flowers cheaper...for a few months, of course! (Make sure they are aware your supply won't last forever!) #3 Pot Pourri.

How To Start An Annual Flower Garden
Design and Layout:
  • Layout
  • Color theme Designing a color theme gives your plan order and purpose, and eliminates a disorganized effect by using too many colors. Popular color themes include:
    • All white
    • Shade mixtures of one color
    • All pastels
    • A sharp color contrast to your home or the trim on your home
  • Plant levels Plan a nice size transition from front to back so all your annuals are visible.
  • Spacing
  • Mixtures
Choosing Your Annuals: Many annual flowers including alyssum, marigold, sunflowers and zinnias can easily be started from seed sown directly in the ground. To do so, scatter the seed in the prepared planting bed, lightly cover with soil and keep moist until germination. Once the seedlings are a few inches high, thin them out to the proper spacing. Other annuals come in a variety of sizes and containers including six-packs, four-inch pots or gallon pots at the nursery. Larger plants are typically more expensive, but will give you color faster while smaller plants will bloom longer into the season. Preparation and Care:
  • Environment Determine the amount of sunlight and moisture each area receives before planting your annuals.
