Passionate You

Whether your flower garden is confined to a few planter boxes on your balcony, or spread out over an acre, it is not "just any flower garden". It is your creation and reflects the passion within you. You can make your garden as simple, or as complicated as you choose. The only criteria you should consider is that you create your garden from your heart. Allow yourself to feel inspired and truly creative. Let the flowers you choose touch you and become a part of you, reflecting who you really are. This web site is not going to be big on the "do's and don'ts" of planting flowers. Contrary to what is maybe popular belief, throw your perfectionism out the window along with your fear of making a mistake. Plant what you want where your want. On the Flower Types page we will cover a few basic planting techniques. You will also find "Helpful Links" on the Site Map . After that creating your flower garden is like painting a picture in "3D". Have fun! There are just a few considerations to keep in mind when you start to plan your garden:

Early Blooming Flowers: What to plant for Early Spring Blooms
Gardeners in cold climates can still enjoy colorful flowers in the garden as early as March and even February in some areas, even when there is still snow on the ground. How early certain bulbs, perennials and shrubs will bloom varies from one zone to the next, and even on the location within your own garden (depending on sun, shelter, etc.). The following list is by no means exhaustive, but will give you ideas for some early bloomers that are good bets for producing flowers in late winter and early spring. read more

Gardening: Flower Gardening
We've collected some of the basics of flower gardening on this page, and you can link directly to any of the following topics or scroll down to read through them all.
Planning Basics Here are some of the factors to think about when you're laying out flower beds and choosing your flowers:
Flower Life Span: Your first consideration is usually how long you want your flowers to survive in the garden.
  • Annuals last one season and die out, which means they have to be replanted every year but which means you're also free to change the layouts.
Perennials will survive winter and return the next summer, which means you don't have to replant them but which means you're stuck with the original layout unless you transplant them all.
Climate: You must also factor in the prevailing weather conditions in your area and choose flowers that will thrive in your climate. Your local nurseries will steer you in the right directions, and plant catalogues usually provide zone information for the flowers they sell.
Sun and Shade: Pay attention to the hours of sun and shade wherever you want to plant flowers. Different varieties have different requirements, so don't try to grow a flower that needs lots of sun in a spot that never gets any.

16. Flower Gardening - Your Guide To Creating A Beautiful Flower Garden
flower gardening tips, gardening with perennials, and plant information for colorful, longblooming gardens. Your flower gardening guide.

Your flower gardening guide
DO YOU ENJOY FLOWER GARDENING?
Are you looking to create a stunning backyard garden? Searching for distinctive plants and information on how to grow them in your flower garden? You'll find plenty of garden design ideas and growing tips right here. TO GET STARTED ON YOUR FLOWER GARDEN:
  • you need knowledge -
  • and you have to do some spadework.
For the spadework, you're on your own ;-), but I have designed these pages to share insider knowlege. The gardening tips you'll find here can help take the guesswork out of planning and planting your garden. MY OWN GARDENING BACKGROUND I've gardened big and I've gardened small. These days, I garden with flowering perennials and lots of ornamental grasses on a 10-acre country property with many different garden areas. As a garden writer, photographer and lecturer, I'm passionate about plants and landscape design. I favor a contemporary, easy-care, meadow-like garden style that works with nature, rather than fighting it. In my garden, I try out new perennials and other ornamental plants to find the ones with the best, longest-blooming flowers and attractive presence in the garden all season long. I have also experimented with different flower gardening and landscaping techniques, and share tips here about what really works in the garden.

http://home.earthlink.net/~tillerbee/FlowerGardening/flowerGardening.html
We have so many wild flowers that I have not planted any flower gardens. To me, cultivated flowers such as marigolds, zinnia, cleome, canna, and daisies that I grew in my eastern gardens do not seem appropriate to a mountain landscape. However, in 2000 I started two flower gardens - a rock garden and a xeriscape garden - that I believe will be harmonious with our natural setting. In these gardens, I plan to use wild flowers and other high altitude plants. I expect these gardens to take four or five years to complete and will update this page with my progress. click on an image for a larger view in another window Rock Garden Living in the rocky Mountains, we have rocks of all sizes and shapes. What better place to create a rock garden? After researching alpine gardening techniques and plants, I have started my rock garden. Click here for some links that I found to be useful for creating a rock garden. Behind our house, the land continues to rise towards a crest on our north east property corner. A rocky area was cut into for the house. Not many plants grew on this cut and 17 years after the house was built, the disturbed area had mosses growing but very few wild flowers or grasses. Moreover, the graders pushed excess subsoil into a mound right behind where our hot tub is located, obstructing our view to the undisturbed rocks and the pine forest beyond. 2000 Progress This first picture is a view of the site for my rock garden from a second story balcony on our house. The area in the middle shows the subsoil mound.

Flower Gardening
and Mary Gardens
by Catherine Fournier Planning a garden is, in many ways, like decorating the interior of your house. the main goal in each case is to end up with a practical, attractive living space that suits your family. Three major factors govern both the arrangement of inside and outside the home: the area, the intended use of the space, and your own personal taste. In other words, what you have, what you need and what you like. Additional foctors include the size of the area, style of the home, time available to maintain your design, and other available resources, like garden supplies and nurseries. Unlike a house, garden design changes from one week to the next. Plants grow, bloom and die back, sunlight moves across the area, seasons come and go. For many, this element of change and surprise is the main appeal of gardening. Certan plants may be quite spectacular in one season yet unobtrusive in others. Colour schemes, views and density can change from season to season too. Planning is essential to an attractive, manageable garden. If possible, plan on paper first to avoid wasted time and money. Minor adjustments can be made later, of course, but major features like walls or walks tend to be permanent, and many plants suffer from transplanting and take years to recover to their original glory. In addition, planning on paper first makes it easier to plan the garden as a whole rather than tackling it piece-meal. This helps to create a sense of continuity and harmony between one area of the garden and an other.

Gardening with Flower Bulbs
Think Spring- Think bulbs... but plant soon.
Nothing says spring quite like a daffodil, crocus or tulip. Bulbs, however, can fill your garden with vibrant color from early spring through late summer. They are, in general, very hearty, easy to grow and care for, and will bloom year after year. With just a little effort, you can have colorful blooms from your bulbs all through the spring and summer. Daffodils, iris, tulips, gladiolus, hyacinth, and daylilies are just some of the many bulb favorites. Choosing Bulbs:
Bulbs are easy to purchase over the internet. When buying bulbs, the larger the better in order to ensure a good bloom (bulb size is usually listed as DNI being the largest, DNII being smaller, and DNIII being smallest).
