JOB SEEKERS: EMPLOYERS: Make a resolution to try a trade school
Develop existing skills, or seek a career change

By Toby Chabon-Berger Career Planning Index Job Profile: So, you want to be a musician? Make a resolution to try a trade school Test your job-search IQ with these questions ... Employment agencies can boost your job search Building a career is like building a house. First you create a blueprint of your goals and then you construct a foundation to support the rest of the structure. Advancing your education at a private vocational college can be one of the building blocks to expand your career. Proprietary colleges and vocational schools offer advantages whether you're looking for professional development, a career change or a job that offers ready employment. With a vast array of available skill-based training and education programs in Palm Beach County, it's important to research each school to ensure they provide what you're looking for. Proprietary schools should have proper accreditations, teacher's credentials in the field, placement success and connections to local industry. Jupiter's New England Technical College has operated for more than 21 years, and officials there are proud of its niche in competency-based education programs. The college is accredited by the Florida Department of Education on two levels as an institution and for each program it currently offers.

Lipton Gonzalez, for example, is a biology professor's dream. In high school he scored the maximum "5" on the advanced placement tests in biology and calculus. Now a college sophomore, he has a 3.9 grade point average and is working on a research project on how coronary bypass surgery affects platelet and neutrophil levels in the blood. But he could not afford a four-year college. Instead, he lives at home and attends the Kendall campus of Miami-Dade Community College, which charges only $471 per semester for tuition. Two-thirds of Kendall's 20,000 students are Hispanic. "Sometimes people rag on us because we go to a community college," says Lipton, who was born in Cuba. But now he and several dozen classmates are getting the chance to prove themselves by attending free courses and carrying out research with professors at the nearby University of Miami, which also pays them stipends, covers their community college tuition, and, if they do well, invites them to complete their junior and senior years at the university tuition-free. "I'm doing things that I've never tried before and I really like it," says first-year student Tatiana Ferreiro, who is learning to use new stable isotope techniques to study how the intrusion of saltwater affects photosynthesis rates and the broader health of freshwater plants in Florida. "The only way you can really learn about science is to experience it yourself." Betty Blanco, who is sequencing DNA to learn about genetic variation among small Florida mammals that are environmentally threatened, says, "I consider this a pathway to what I want to do next."

Effective and Ethical Recruitment of Vocational Education Students. Overview. ERIC Digest No. 61.
Like academic education, vocational education has suffered enrollment problems simply because there are fewer students today than a few years ago. Other factors that have hurt vocational enrollments include recent efforts to increase the number of academic credits required for graduation and, in the case of area vocational-technical schools, negative attitudes toward vocational education on the part of sending school personnel. As a result, vocational educators must either reassess their existing marketing and recruitment strategies or develop such programs. The benefits of a well-conceived recruitment programboth inside and outside the education sectorhave been well documented. Educational marketing and recruitment campaigns must not, however, be developed without a strong concern for the ethicality of all strategies used. WHY RECRUIT?

  • The public postsecondary vocational education system is the largest provider of occupational training. In 1993-94, $394 million was spent on such programs. State funds are primarily used to support these programs. We reviewed the performance of the training programs provided by vocational technical centers and community colleges. We found that 37% of all types of vocational programs produced few graduates or their graduates faired poorly in the job market. Vocational programs are often offered at two or more schools in the same region or county. Such duplication of programs may be needed. However, we found that some duplicative programs had low placement rates, trained students for jobs not targeted as high wage or high skill, or had low enrollments. This unnecessary duplication was found among programs offered by both community colleges and vocational technical centers. OPPAGA recommends that the Legislature increase the use of performance-based funding programs where vocational schools and colleges earn their funding through the performance of their programs, rather than strictly enrollment of students. This could give programs added incentive to offer programs with better employment outcomes for their graduates. OPPAGA also recommends that poor-performing programs and unnecessarily duplicated programs be eliminated using objective criteria.

Executive Summary
High Schools That Work is a comprehensive, whole-school revitalization based on the belief that students following general and vocational programs of study can master complex academic and technical subjects if schools create an environment that encourages students to succeed. HSTW sites administer an assessment every two years of the achievement, school experiences, and work experiences of career-bound youth. The assessment includes tests in Reading, Mathematics and Science that are linked with the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) tests the congressionally-mandated "report card of the nation." Because the HSTW test development and score scale are based on the NAEP characteristics, it is possible to make comparisons between HSTW assessment results and the national NAEP academic and vocational samples.
