My undergrad degree was also in art..(at Ohio
State). I went back 10 years later and took 7 courses
to receive my certificaton in Art Ed for K - 12th at
Florida International University (FIU)in Miami. I
taught art in the public schools while I was doing
this. Here in Miami the average elementary classes in
public school range between 28 - 32 students. As far
as the pay..Florida varies alot..depending on where
you are located. I've been teaching 15 years in Miami, have my Masters, and usually work summer school (which brings your salary up) and I just passed the 50,000. mark. I'm not sure where that stands on the national average. Miami is the 4th largest school district in the nation, has an great art program..the district is

District School Board of Pasco County
NBPTS certification is a two part process: development of a portfolio and an assessment center writing process. The teacher must provide documentation to show that he/she has addressed the standards for their certification area. In Pasco County, eleven of our teachers recently achieved National Board certification and will be recognized for this accomplishment at a future School Board meeting. Pasco County now has 54 teachers with National Board Certification. The names of the new teacher recipients and their school sites are:

Students try their hands at many activities this month , from creating "raptor stamps" and bird coloring sheets for younger students to writing raptor stories, researching true/false statements, and calculating ratios of wingspan and length of birds and themselves (arms that is) for junior high students. High school students dive into population dynamics, examining carrying capacities and solving raptor mysteries. Shamu TV: don’t miss this month’s airing of Shamu TV: Amazing Animal Rescues on April 18 that follows the stories of saving manatees, koalas, and the orphaned gray whale J.J. Meet the students at Children’s Academy in Stafford, Virginia, who have been working for nearly two years to create a habitat for endangered plants and animals on the school’s three-acre property. Their efforts resulted in the National Wildlife Federation bestowing a Schoolyard Habitat certification on the project in 2002.

Monday, July 28, 1997 Higher certification standards urged
By Thomas B. Pfankuch

Times-Union staff writer Sixty years ago, Florida teachers who met a few state standards would be certified to teach for life. Some states still allow lifetime certification, but today teachers in Florida must apply for recertification every five years. ''We want teachers to be current, to continue their growth and professional development,'' said Ava Belitzky, director of the state's Office of Professional Training Services for the Department of Education. But some state and local officials say Florida's minimum standards for recertification don't go far enough to push districts to offer training for teachers, or to push teachers to get it. ''We're getting what the state requires, but we're not getting what we need,'' said Andy Ford, president of the Duval County teachers' union. The standards set by the Legislature are similar to those used by the 41 other states who have recertification requirements in place, according to the Education Commission of the States, an independent commission that compiles educational research and data.

Florida:
Flush With Cash by Jessica L. Sandham Vital Statistics Public school districts Public schools 2.3 million K-12 enrollment Minority students Children in poverty Students with disabilities $12.6 billion Annual K-12 expenditures
(all revenue sources) he big news out of Florida's legislature last year was a budget so flush with cash that lawmakers tried to give some of it back. Although a Republican proposal for a $50 tax rebate for property owners withered under a gubernatorial veto, district officials say they're benefiting from the surplus funds through an increase of more than 5 percent in the general state operating budget for schools. "We have to thank our legislators because they were wonderful to us," says Henry Fraind, a spokesman for the 347,000-student Miami-Dade County schools. With the economy healthy, Florida provides strong incentives for teachers to earn national board certification. But even as school leaders express gratitude, the Florida teachers' unions contend that lawmakers missed an opportunity to do more for education. Given the healthy economy and a $2.5 billion tobacco settlement, legislators could have pumped more money into the school funding formula and supported a proposal by Frank T. Brogan, the outgoing education commissioner who was elected lieutenant governor last fall, to expand professional-development opportunities for teachers and administrators, says Cathy Kelly, the assistant director for government relations for the Florida Teaching Profession-NEA, an affiliate of the National Education Association. "The money was spent on lots of stuff other than education," Kelly says. "The priority was not education. The priority was keeping everybody happy in an election year."

Education Creating A Climate for Job Growth Florida Means Business Strengthening Florida's Familes ... Print Supporting Teachers
As a result of the hard work of our teachers and Florida's innovative education reforms, rising student achievement is occurring throughout the state. Governor Jeb Bush and Lieutenant Governor Toni Jennings recognize the critical role that teachers play in helping students achieve high levels of academic success, which is why the state has implemented several programs in order to support and reward teachers.
Excellent Teaching Program This program provides incentives for Florida’s teachers to become certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). Florida is second in the nation in the number of nationally certified teachers with 4,938 nationally board certified teachers. Teachers who receive NBPTS certification are eligible to receive an annual bonus of 10 percent of the prior year’s statewide average salary for classroom teachers. Teachers who receive NBPTS certification and mentor other teachers are eligible for an additional annual bonus of 10 percent of the prior year’s statewide average salary for classroom teachers.
Governor's Fiscal Year 2004-05 Budget Recommendations The Governor recommends $54 million for the Excellent Teaching Program in Fiscal Year 2004-05. This amount:
