Chairman
Escambia County School District
215 W. Garden Street
Pensacola, FL 32502 Dear Mr. DeWitt: Through an article appearing today in the Pensacola News Journal ("Teachers fight plan to cut classes"), I have learned that the Escambia County School Board will meet with a group of concerned teachers to discuss the social studies curriculum, most particularly the Board’s plan to eliminate a year-long civics class by combining that course with American history. As the General Counsel for the Center for Individual Freedom, I have been and continue to be involved with the Center’s efforts to inform public school officials and parents about the necessities of maintaining rigorous and thoughtful curricula that include coursework on American history and government. As a result, I now write to express my concerns with these changes to the Escambia County Schools’ curriculum.

DID YOU KNOW: Students whose parents frequently discussed school-related matters with them had more than double the odds of enrolling in a four-year college. The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children. Studies of individual families show that the level of parental support has more influence on the academic future of the student than financial status or education of the parent combined. Florida's Advisory and Oversight Board
The status of the Miami-Dade County Public School District, America's fourth largest public school system, has become a major issue of concern in the local community and also to the State of Florida. The extent of the fiscal, managerial and educational crisis has yet to be fully uncovered and disclosed. Students, educators, and taxpayers alike continue to suffer as funds are squandered, resources wasted, and conditions allowed to continuously deteriorate. The State of Florida created an Oversight and Advisory Board to review the issues and to provide recommendations to the Governor and the Legislature. Media reports, official documents, formal recommendations, correspondence and background materials are listed below.
