Princeton review ranks Florida's school testing program among best in the nation
In a report released on May 6th by The Princeton Review entitled Testing the Testers 2003: An Annual Ranking of State Accountability Systems , Florida was ranked sixth in the country for best practices in school testing. The positive results of this analysis are welcomed by Florida educators, as the state prepares itself to act in accordance with the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. (Monday Report, May 19, 2003) PSAT scores raised to fix error: Results change for 500,000 across the country
The College Board recently decided to rescore the October 15, 2002 version of the PSAT, due to a grammatically disputable question in the writing section that was discovered by Kevin Keegan, a Maryland journalism teacher. It has been over 20 years since the last reevaluation of an Educational Testing Service (ETS) test. The rescoring of this test means that potentially 500,000 students' test scores could be raised, increasing their chances of being selected for the National Merit Scholarship Program. (Silver Chips Online, May 28, 2003) No Child Left Behind: Costs and benefits
Writer William J. Mathis critically examines the projected costs and additional responsibilities and efforts of educators needed to fulfill NCLB requirements, in contrast to the "noble" yet unrealistic goals and expected benefits of the implementation of NCLB. He questions whether the system can ever work, and whether or not all students can be expected to make "adequate yearly progress." Are the goals of improved test scores broad enough, or even appropriate goals for public education? (Phi Delta Kappan, V. 84 No. 9 Pages 679-686, May 2003)

By offering vouchers to students at failing schools, the Florida A-Plus choice and accountability system was intended to motivate those schools to improve their students' academic performance. 1.25 linear shelf feet (in 3 document cases) (ca. 500 items, in 60 folders) This collection contains the historically significant records retained from the operations of La Plata County School District No. 5 at the Pinon Grove School. The school, the sole one in La Plata County School District Number 5, was known as the Hood School in its early days, due to the Hood family's ownership of land on which it operated. Predominant records are annual reports and teachers' registers of their classes. The materials would be useful for a study of small rural schools and for research into individuals who lived, studied, and/or worked in the Pinon Grove area on the Upper Florida River in La Plata County in the 1920s through 1941.

General Information The USF School of Music
is an exciting place for study and performance in one of the most artistically active areas in Florida. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in performance, music education, jazz studies, composition and piano pedagogy. Instruction is given in all orchestral instruments (woodwind, brass, percussion, string), voice, and piano. Students majoring in music education may select an instrumental or a vocal specialization. Many students not majoring in music elect to complete a music minor, choosing from three concentrations: theory/history/literature, applied medium or composition. There are many incentives that attract music students to USF. Among these are a distinguished artist faculty; splendid ensembles that perform regularly at state, regional and national music conventions; an exceptional jazz studies program; one of the most complete electronic studios in the nation (SYCOM); and a cultural environment that boasts two professional orchestras, a professional opera company, a professional ballet company, and four of Florida's leading performing arts centers. For every music student, listening and learning opportunities never cease; for the advanced student, performing opportunities abound!

To this end, our programs provide broad-based instruction in visual arts disciplines, through a strong curriculum as well as through professional experiences such as exhibitions and internships. It is our conviction that the best place for the education of artists is in the challenging academic climate found in large comprehensive universities, so that the art, springing from excited and curious minds, is created in the context of ideas. In support of this belief, our curriculum is designed to provide our students with a rich mix of experiences, from traditional to contemporary. We strive for excellence in all of our programs of study, while providing enough flexibility to allow students to select either a general major or a focused professional curriculum. Our faculty, through a strong commitment to teaching, and with continuing professional involvement as artists, designers and scholars, offer students the benefits of their scholarship and professional experience. The University of Florida's School of Art and Art History has the size (more than 40 faculty, 600 undergraduate majors and more than 100 graduate students), the diversity of programs and degree offerings, and the facilities to constitute a fully configured art school within the largest university in the southeast. The school shares the College of Fine Arts' mission of serving as an educational, professional and cultural resource in the visual arts for the campus, community, state and region. The undergraduate and graduate students of the school are both contributors to and beneficiaries of that commitment.

LaBelle, Florida - The Citrus Capital of Florida
FIRST POPULATED: Late 1800s
CITY POPULATION: 3,400 GREATER LABELLE: 12,000 HENDRY COUNTY: 28,000
INTERESTING FACTS: LaBelle, located in a vast oak hammock on the shores of the Caloosahatchee River, at the intersection of State Roads 29 and 80, 26 miles east of Ft. Myers. The town and unincorporated communities within a 15-mile radius watch the number of inhabitants rise to 12,000 or more during the winter growing season. The area was originally settled by the Caloosa Indians, who held religious rites here. LaBelle mean "the beautiful" in French. According to Florida history books, Capt. Francis Asbury Hendry named the area in 1896 for his daughters, Laura and Belle. The greater LaBelle area includes North LaBelle on the north side of the Caloosahatchee River and Port LaBelle, 3 miles east of downtown LaBelle. Citrus, mainly oranges and grapefruit, and vegetable growing drive the town's economy. Until the late 1940s, LaBelle, and nearly all of Hendry County, was owned by cattlemen. But cattle ranches then began to downsize and range land gradually turned to farmland. Since 1986, citrus plantings in the county have more than doubled, from 40,000 to more than 90,000 acres. Today, Hendry has more than 15 million citrus trees, more than any other Florida county. (St. Lucie County has 12 million while Polk county has 11 million.) Hendry is third in citrus acreage with 100,000 acres. St. Lucie county has 107,000 acres while Polk county has 104,000 acres.
