Sponsored Resources : Computer Training Schools Frequently Asked Questions About GreatSchools.net About School Profiles About Enhanced School Profiles About Searching for Schools About Comparing Schools ... General Questions About GreatSchools About School Profiles What kinds of schools are included on GreatSchools.net? GreatSchools.net includes profiles of all public elementary, middle and high schools in the United States, with more extensive information about schools in GreatSchools.net Guide states. Charter schools, magnet schools, year-round schools, and some continuation and alternative schools are all included. Certain types of public school programs, such as regional occupational schools, adult schools or independent study schools may not be included because not enough information is available to create complete GreatSchools profiles. In addition, schools that have been in operation for less than two years may not be included, as sufficient data may not yet be available to create complete GreatSchools profiles. GreatSchools.net also includes basic information about private schools. Private school information is limited because it is not publicly available in any form we can use to create consistent profiles. While the state Departments of Education make public school records available for anyone to view, private schools are not required to release such information. Where academic performance is concerned, public schools in most states are required to administer standardized exams, and the results of these exams account for some of our data; since private schools are not required to give these tests or report results, there is no way to provide performance information or comparison.

SCHOOL BOARD APPOINTS FIRST INSPECTOR GENERAL FOR A FLORIDA SCHOOL DISTRICT
May 14, 2003
The Miami-Dade School Board appointed Herbert Cousins, Jr. to the position of Inspector General today. He is the first person to serve as Inspector General for a Florida school district.
"I know that I speak for all my colleagues on the Board when I say that we look forward to working with the inspector general," said Dr. Michael M. Krop, Miami-Dade School Board Chair. "Our goals are the same: to serve our community and to ultimately provide our students with the best education opportunities available."
The School Board entered into an agreement last year with the Florida Department of Education's Office of Inspector General to establish an office within Miami-Dade County Public Schools. This is the first time such an office has been opened in a Florida school district.
Cousins has more than 20 years of investigative experience with the FBI including service as a special agent in charge and as the section chief of the Criminal Investigative Division in Washington, D.C. He also has experience as an educator, having served as assistant principal, Spanish teacher and foreign language department head for Omaha Public Schools in Nebraska.

Best Campus Housing
FGCU’s “Club Med”

Students call it “Club Med” after the opulent Caribbean resort, and rightfully so—on-campus housing at Florida Gulf Coast University is top-notch. Looking out over a grassy field to a 60-acre lake, residents are only yards away from the free luxury water activities such as skiing, canoeing, kayaking, and sailing. Unlike many other campuses’ dorms, all of FGCU’s housing is built in apartment style with each unit including two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and spacious living room. The four students per apartment and can choose to have individual bedrooms or share with one other student. As at other universities, the office of housing and residence life also schedules social events. This past fall, students got decked out in their Hawaiian shirts, hula skirts, and flowery leis to attend the “Housing Luau.” Other events include Resident Advisor (R.A.) banquets, R.A. Karaoke nights, and “Eagle Spirit”—a challenge from the athletic department to the residents to bring school spirit to basketball games. The commons is open until midnight to let students socialize around the 52” big-screen television with surround sound, enjoy a video game area fully equipped with a PlayStation 2 and games, and relax in the screened-in patio with a barbecue grill and a pool, use a game room with pool, ping pong, cable television, vending machines, and much more. During finals week, students are re-energized by free refreshments.

Continued Best Inaugural Sports Season
Watch out, Division I-AA football! Florida has a new football program, and if it’s anything like the past schools that Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger has led onto the field, Florida Atlantic University ’s opponents are in for a world of pain. Schnellenberger, who led the University of Miami to national prominence in the 1980’s, was brought to FAU by the challenge of creating a program of his own, says Katrina McCormack, sports information director. Schnellenberger says it’s one of the most important things he’s ever done. The FAU Fighting Owls averaged 13,000 fans at each of their home games in their first season, topping out at nearly 26,000 for the inaugural game against Slippery Rock College. “It was a fun season,” McCormack says. “It was good to see the fans come out and support the team and enjoy the games.” The Owls will certainly improve on a 4-6 record next season and are looking at the future possibility of becoming a Division I program. FAU has a team that’s primed to become a perennial national title contender. With a year of experience under their wings, the Owls are sure to be a fighting force next season.
