THE LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER AND CITING SOURCES
UPDATED 04/19/04 What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is cheating: it is the “wrongful act of taking the product of another person’s mind and presenting it as one’s own” (Alexander Lindey, Plagiarism and Originality qtd. in Gibaldi 30). According to Joseph Gibaldi of the Modern Language Association (MLA), “To use another person’s ideas or expressions in your writing without acknowledging the source is to plagiarize. Plagiarism, then, constitutes intellectual theft” (30). Certainly plagiarism is morally and ethically wrong: this form of cheating involves stealing, lying, and insulting others. First, taking ideas and words from another to use as your own without permission or acknowledgement is stealing. Second, offering another person’s ideas and words as your own in any assignment—a paper, test, examination, poster, or oral reportis lying. Third, disrespect for the intellectual integrity of the source, your fellow students, and your teachers is insulting (Babbie).

Imposed information seeking in public libraries and school library media centers: a common behaviour?
Melissa Gross
School of Information Studies
The Florida State University
Tallahassee, FL 32306-2100 USA
Abstract The imposed query model provides a new way of thinking about whom the user is in information proving organizations and environments. It does this by making a distinction between questions that are self-generated (internally motivated by personal context) and those that are imposed (thought up by one person then given to someone else to resolve). While the imposed query model represents familiar behaviour, it is a dimension of information seeking that has only recently been explicitly addressed and isolated for study. This article summarizes research on the imposed query in two different information providing contexts: the elementary school and the adult reference desk at the public library. Results reveal whom the imposers and agent users are in these environments and provide an assessment of how common imposed queries are in these contexts.
Introduction
Many models are available that represent the information seeking process ( Wilson , 1999). The majority of these models assume that individuals seek information and interact with information systems in response to their own, self-generated information needs. While these models do recognize that people go to other people as potential resource when in pursuit of information, the models fail to recognize that the default behaviour, when the person resource doesn't have the answer, doesn't have to be an interaction with information providing objects, organizations, or systems. Instead the person seeking information may ask someone to find the answer for them.

Associated Press
Monday, May 17, 2004; 3:36 PM One of the contenders for the superintendent of schools position in the District was hired Monday by the Miami-Dade County school board. Rudy F. Crew accepted a five-year contract to be that district's new superintendent, with a beginning annual salary of $295,000. Crew, who was D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams' top choice of three finalists, made an unannounced visit to Washington over the weekend to meet with several city leaders and school board members. "We have several outstanding candidates very much in play for the position. And if Mr. Crew has made a decision to move to Miami we will move on to these other candidates," Tony Bullock, a spokesman for Williams, said Monday. "We still have 3 or 4 top-shelf candidates, really outstanding candidates. And I think in a way, Rudy Crew being out of the picture helps the District focus on who the superintendent will be. I think we got into a bit of a bidding war we didn't want to be in," Bullock said. He did not expect Williams who was traveling in Italy on Monday to indicate another preference. Miami-Dade's school board voted late last month to offer the position to Crew, who ran New York City's schools in from 1995-99. He now works at the Stupski Foundation, a California education-reform think tank.
