American Academy is located on the same campus as American Heritage. The Academy is designed to help students with average to gifted intelligence who are functioning below grade level. In many cases these students have mild to moderate learning disabilities. In the Academy we help students "learn how to learn." Small class sizes are the first step. From first to sixth grade there are no more than 12 children with a teacher, a full time teacher assistant and a masters level reading instructor who accompanies the curriculum. All teachers are learning disabled certified, teaching in the field of their bachelors, masters or doctorate degrees. Lower school students at the Academy receive highly individualized instruction. The academic curriculum is "tailor made" according to each child's particular strengths and weaknesses. Students in first through third grade have a wide range of specialty teachers. Each student will have art, music, media center, computer, investigative science and physical education. For students in fourth through sixth grade choice is given according to their "fine arts wheel." Six choices are given: drawing, painting, ceramics, drama, choral music or band. The student chooses his or her favorite subject three times a week and second choice twice a week. In addition, students in fourth through sixth grade have investigative science lab, computer, and media center once a week.

Whole Language in an Elementary School Library Media Center. ERIC Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC INTRODUCTION: PHILOSOPHICAL ORIENTATION The change from a basic skills to a whole language approach precipitates vast changes in the school library media center. This digest will examine these changes, specifically at the elementary school level, in terms of three curricular foci: theme studies, process writing, and literature-based reading. It will also discuss the new demands placed upon the collection and the school librarian.
    THEME STUDIES
Theme studies are not unlike the units of study many teachers have taught for years. The main difference is that theme studies rely upon children's literature instead of textbooks. Children explore a topic in far more detail and spend much longer on each theme than in a textbook-driven program. Children engaged in a theme study use the school media center to seek information about specific topics. They also use works of various genres to supplement their research. Fiction, for example, demonstrates attitudes and behaviors, the reasons to use the information found in nonfiction books. Poetry can provide an aesthetic dimension to the theme study topic.

There is no other program just like ours. However, there are some schools that have similar programs, and even other schools that offer programs in areas that people inquiring about the ETC are often interested in. In the spirit of collaboration, we offer the following list for your information. Also included on the list are research centers that do not grant degrees or certificates.

ENDLESS LEARNING The small-town atmosphere of Lake Wales is what makes newcomers, as well as long time residents, happy to live in a less hectic place to work and attend school. The Polk County School System provides high-quality educational opportunities to children and adults. Teachers who care, parents who are involved, and students who work hard to achieve success are a winning combination. The Polk County School System is the eighth-largest school district in Florida, covering 1,858 square miles. Over 77,000 students from pre-kindergarten through adult school are enrolled. The Lake Wales area is served by five elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, one technical academy, two private parochial schools and one private co-educational residential school. Two colleges, Warner Southern and Webber International University, offer higher education close to home. Polk Community College is in nearby Winter Haven. It offers courses paralleling those of the state university system.

The Media Center provides students and teachers with materials for both recreational reading and instructional activities. Students are encouraged to visit the Media Center as often as needed. They are provided with opportunities to learn about the use of the Media Center and its resources through scheduled classes as well as through assistance on an individual basis.
Throughout the year, students participate in special events sponsored by the Media Center. These include observation of Children's Book Week in November and School Library Week in April. An annual book fair is held in February, and students can enter media-related contests each month. Third grade students participate in the annual Fairy Tale Knowdown in the spring. Students also take part in two state-wide events, helping to select the yearly winners of the Sunshine State Young Readers' Award (grades 3-5) and the Florida Reading Association Children's Book Award (grades PreK-2). Students may check out books from the Media Center to enjoy both in the classroom and at home. Books may be kept for up to two weeks, and may be renewed as needed. A student who has an overdue book will need to return the book before checking out another; if the book is lost, it must be paid for so that a replacement copy can be purchased.
