The Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS) is a nonprofit service organization which serves as the binding force and communication hub for its member schools. The purpose, as put forth in its Constitution, is to promote the common interest of all members and to advance their welfare; promote and maintain high scholastic, military and ethical standards in member schools; represent the mutual interests of the member schools before the Department of Defense as well as the general public; foster and extend patriotism and respect for duly constituted authority; and cultivate citizens who love peace and who strive to maintain it. Regular membership is extended to essentially military schools which have a member of the armed services detailed or approved by the Department of Defense, and which maintain good standing in their regional accrediting organization. (An "essentially military" school is defined as an institution with military programs approved by one of the military services and which organizes its student body as a cadet corps, with students habitually in uniform and continually under military discipline while under the jurisdiction of the college or school.) Associate membership may be granted to schools offering a military program but which do not otherwise qualify for regular membership.

Short on cash but need your leather shoes polished? A banana peel can actually shine shoes when applied and buffed off. This is some of the advice you might hear during the “Mr. Cheapskate” segment of Flagler College ’s Radio Free Enterprise . “Mr. Cheapskate” gives funny and practical advice on how to get things free, or at least really cheap. “ Radio Free Enterprise focuses on money issues for the financially challenged,” says Donna Webb, advisor for Flagler College Students In Free Enterprise (FCSIFE). The eight-minute show is broadcast three times a week on Flagler’s radio station WFCF 88.5 FM. FCSIFE members, an organization that teaches students and the community about the economic marketplace, produce the radio show. Last December, FCSIFE held its first “Kids Marketplace” to help kids ages 6 to16 become entrepreneurs for the day. Twenty-five children participated in the event by selling products they made or found: shell ornaments and jewelry, ornamental snowmen made out of 2-liter bottles, baked goods, and old toys from their closets. The kids were encouraged to donate a portion of the profits to charity for the children of Afghanistan. FCSIFE also helps run Flagler’s Legacy, a small shop in the center of St. Augustine’s busy tourist shopping district. All items sold are related in some way to Henry Flagler, Flagler

IRCC Moves from Paper to Plastic
What do records, 8-tracks, and Indian River Community College ’s printed catalogs have in common? All three have gone the way of the dinosaur, being ousted by more innovative CD forms. However, unlike old vinyl enthusiasts, users of IRCC’s new CD catalog aren’t nostalgic for the antiquated version. Since its introduction in May 2003, the CD has been a number-one hit. IRCC staff members recognized that potential students don’t want to wade through hundreds of pages in a printed catalog to find out what courses to take, when to apply, and what’s up with student life. Using the interactive CD catalog, users can learn all of this, plus feel like they’re taking a campus tour from the comfort of their own computer chairs. “It’s also easy to navigate, not 450 pages, and easy to carry,” says Michelle Abaldo, director of institutional advancement. The user-friendly CD program begins with a three-minute video giving an overview of the college. Then, videos featuring IRCC students introduce topics such as student life, financial aid, and the application process. “With video clips of fellow students, users can see and hear what the college is like and what students have to say,” Abaldo says. “It gives a much better feel for the college.” Students can also follow links to the course catalog and the IRCC web site to search for additional information.
