Florida Law Firm Lures NY Partners, Becomes Player
Focusing on Real Estate Financing Helps Greenberg Traurig Move Up By Mark Walsh
From , May 11, 1998 When T. Rowe Price Cos. was selling a group of its real estate funds last year, the mutual fund giant hesitated before engaging Judith Fryer as counsel. "It took a little convincing," says Lucy Robins, associate general counsel at T.2 Rowe Price. "Our management wasn’t as familiar with Greenberg as some of the national firms." The incident highlights the challenges 360-lawyer Greenberg Traurig must overcome in cracking New York’s crowded legal market. It also illustrates the inroads Florida’s largest law firm is making. In the last four years, its New York office has mushroomed to 80 lawyers from five on the strength of its burgeoning real estate and corporate practices. In February, the branch relocated to plush new quarters in the Met Life Building, with room to expand to 140 lawyers. Yet Greenberg Traurig’s New York office, which derives about 30% of its revenues from real estate, could be especially vulnerable if the market suffers a serious down turn.

Back to Research Guides page Florida Case/Court Research Florida’s state court system is comprised of 67 County Courts; 20 Circuit Courts; 5 Courts of Appeals; and the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is the state’s highest judicial authority. It sits seven judges. County courts are the scene of more mundane legal matters, such as traffic violations and small claims court. Researching case law in Florida is very similar to researching the opinions of any other State or Federal Court. Depending on the information you start out with and the information you wish to obtain, there are several sources you can utilize. Keep in mind that since approximately 70% of cases decided are actually printed, there may be times when a trip to the courthouse is necessary to obtain opinions in slip form. DIGESTS Digests are designed to be used as an index to the case reporters. Florida cases are digested in the following sets: West’s Florida Digest and Florida Digest 2d - Utilizes the West Publishing Co.’s system of topics and key numbers to provide access to state cases. Both editions include table of cases and descriptive word indexes. The Florida Digest should be consulted for cases prior to 1935. Volumes are kept up to date via annual pocket parts. Both Federal and State (District Court of Appeals and Supreme Court only) cases are included. (Florida Collection, Reference, and Core B). Decennial Digests These include cases from every state and federal court, so Florida cases are included (again, only District Court of Appeals and Supreme court). However, the set is cumbersome to use. Published by West, they utilize the key number system, and also include a table of cases and a descriptive word index.

Law - Florida law keeping brain damaged woman alive ruled unconstitutional
"Law keeping brain-damaged woman alive ruled unconstitutional," is the headline to this just filed AP story , dateline Tampa, Florida. Some quotes: The law pushed by Gov. Jeb Bush to keep a severely brain damaged woman alive is unconstitutional, a Circuit Court judge ruled Thursday. The governor's office filed an immediate appeal. The ruling by Pinellas Circuit Court Judge W. Douglas Baird voided the law passed in October, just days after Terri Schiavo was disconnected from the feeding and hydration tube which has kept her alive for more than a decade. The law allowed Bush to order Terri Schiavo's feeding tube reconnected. The governor's filing with the state 2nd District Court of Appeal will keep the tube in place. * * * Baird ruled that the so-called "Terri's Law" is unconstitutional because it violates Terri Schiavo's right to privacy and because it delegated legislative power to the governor. Calling the measure "extraordinary," Baird said he assumed the law was passed with good intentions but allowed the government to go too far in overriding a citizen's private medical decisions and gave the governor "unbridled discretion."

Tallahassee, Florida 32399-0250 Dear Mr. Craft: This is in response to your recent inquiry to the Civil Rights Division concerning the ongoing design of Florida's Central Voter Registration System for compliance with the Help America Vote Act of 2002, 42 U.S.C. §§ 15301-15545 ("HAVA"). Your two questions relate to whether a "paperless" voter registration system would be consistent with the requirements of federal law. It is our understanding the State envisions a statewide voter registration system completely integrated with the State's driver's license system, where data validation would occur during voter contact with an office of the State Motor Vehicles Department. Approximately 63% of the State's voter registration applications come through such offices. The State's current driver's license system is a paperless design, with photographs, information and signatures captured digitally so that an applicant does not have to complete a paper application form. To fully integrate the voter registration system with this system, paperless voter registration applications would be used with signature images captured on a digital signature pad. This paperless system would be used in both driver's license offices and other NVRA-covered voter registration offices. It is our further understanding that no paper of any kind would be generated during this process.
