Order Shady Palms SEARCH FOR NEWS Enter Keyword: Virtual schools still lack reviews, but get millions By Kimberly Miller Palm Beach Post Capital Bureau Monday, April 26, 2004 It's the second year the schools, Sylvan's Connections Academy and K12's Florida Virtual Academy, will receive state dollars for providing online courses to children who learn full-time at home and who rely mostly on their parents for direct instruction. Lawmakers spent several harried moments in a corner with virtual-school lobbyists during a budget meeting early this week before representatives from both chambers agreed to support the companies for a second year. But those legislators seemed unconcerned about the lack of an evaluation of the schools, one of which is run by former national Education Secretary and drug czar William Bennett. Senate Education Committee Chairman Lee Constantine, R-Altamonte Springs, and Rep. Joe Pickens, R-Palatka, both said they were relying solely on parents' praise of the program when making the decision to extend the schools' contracts for one more year and give them $3.8 million to split.
