In the aftermath of a hurricane or other natural or human hazard we often find that some of the damage is repetitive, in other words the same type of damage had happened before. We also find ourselves discussing how we did not learn the lessons taught by the last disaster., and wondering how we can avoid this from happening again the next time we suffer the impact of a hurricane. Mitigation is our best alternative for reducing the potential for damage from recurring hurricanes and other hazards. To be effective, mitigation must take place in an environment where everyone is aware or knowledgeable about the important benefits derived from this practice. This means emergency managers, building design and construction professionals, planners, industry and business managers, policy-makers and the general public must all be educated about mitigation and its benefits.
