The Florida Keys
Laid-back and postcard-perfect, the Florida Keys are strewn with swaying palm trees and sandy beaches. This chain of subtropical islands, linked by the Overseas Highway (U.S. 1), ends in Key West, a fanciful town that’s as much a state of mind as it is a prime vacation spot. Artists, writers, fishers, and retirees make their homes in the Keys, amid fragile natural resources that include coral reefs, mangroves, great white herons, and Key deer, a miniature subspecies of Virginia white-tailed deer. FLORIDA KEYS Crittercam is on assignment in the tropical waters of southern Florida, where nurse sharks grant us a rare glimpse into the trials and tribulations of shark mating. Generally good-tempered, these sharks can be unbelievably aggressive when mating. The males bury their teeth firmly into the females' fins, leaving telling scars, while females twist and roll violently to test the males' vigor. For over a decade, Dr. Jeff Carrier and biologist Wes Pratt have managed to get close to these mating encounters. Yet their view has been limited. They've gotten the close-ups, but what about the big picture? What happens when nobody's watching? Is nurse shark mating limited to the small area they can observe? To investigate, Jeff and Wes team up with National Geographic's Crittercam team, and series host Dr. Mike Heithaus, to embark on a mission of intriguing intimacy. Nurse sharks are homebodies, almost never venturing more than 50 miles from where they were born. This has enabled Jeff and Wes to study a single group of these sharks near the Florida Keys for the past nine years. They are able to document growth rate, genetic relations and the mating practices of hundreds of individuals. They watch the yearly struggle of young males trying to move up the social ladder, while females return to mate every other year, then disappear for a six-month pregnancy.

geography, geography serves as a bridge between the physical and social sciences. Thetwo geography minors are physical geography and cultural geography.
http://www.jsu.edu/depart/geography/geoghome.html
GEOGRAPHY Geography serves as a bridge between the physical and social sciences. Empahsis is on the nature and distribution of environmental systems, human activities, relations between them, and their variation from place to place. Geography's uniqueness is not derived from the subject matter studied, but from the discipline's technical and methodological approach to the locational analysis of phenomena.
The geography major is performance-based with a research project required for graduation. The department offers four track options within the major and two geography minors.
The track options for a geography major are general geography, geoarchaeology, geographic techniques, and cultural resource management (CRM). The two geography minors are physical geography and cultural geography.
A minor in physical geography emphasizes the processes and forces that effect the earth's surface and the interaction between the environment and the humans living within that environment. Physical geography includes examination of the areas of meteorology, climatology, biogeography, pedology, and geomorphology. A minor in cultural geography concentrates on examining the spatial patterns of humans on earth and their demographics, distribution, economics, politics, language, religion, ethnicity, behavior, settlement patterns, transportation systems, cultural patterns, and urbanization.

Earthwatch Combats Geographic Illiteracy
National Geographic Society Grant will send teachers to conservation hotspots in Brazil and U.S, allowing students to apply global lessons locally.
MAYNARD. MA 24 teachers from six states - California, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, and Washington – will venture to the vast wetlands of Brazil’s Pantanal and to the Skagit River watershed of Washington this summer to participate in conservation research projects as part of a $75,000 grant award Earthwatch Institute has received from National Geographic Society Education Foundation (NGSEF). Earthwatch’s "Strengthening Geography in Schools through Conservation Field Work and Collaboration" is strategically designed to address the lack of geographic knowledge among students in the United States.
"This innovative project will help students become stewards of our natural and cultural resources,” said Barbara Chow, Executive Director of the Society’s Education Foundation. “Giving these teachers a first-hand look at the realities of conservation issues will enliven their teaching.”
The project will send 24 geography/science educators to conservation projects in the Pantanal wetlands in Brazil and the Skagit River watershed in Washington State. Through subsequent workshops and websites, these teachers expect to reach another 2,400 K-12 teachers and 240,000 students with geography and conservation lessons linking field research to local environmental issues.
