UF to release Florida geography CD-ROM to state
By LAWRENCE WISE
Contributing Writer

Thanks to UF's department of urban and regional planning, school children now will have access to a detailed geographic library on CD-ROM. A computer program designed by UF's Geoplan Center makes geographic information available to Florida residents. "We're all happy about this," project co-investigator Richard Schneider said. "This is an excellent development that is good for the state and good for the people involved." The project coordinators will release the CD-ROM's viewer in one month, said Paul Zwick, principal investigator for the project. The viewer will allow any Florida resident with a CD-ROM to access this information. For each of the state's 67 counties, the project compiled 80 categories of detailed geographic information collected by multiple state and local agencies, nonprofit organizations and private companies into a geographic library on CD-ROM. Previously, the technical form of the data made using the information difficult for the general public. The viewer allows them to use the data. The center, a Geographic Information System research and teaching facility, will make the CD-ROM and viewer available for $20 per county or $1000 for information on the entire state. This information includes data on each county's land use, soil, roads, habitat and tax information in addition to satellite images and aerial photographs.

Between Ancient and Modern
In AD 476, warriors attacked the city of Rome and ended the more than 800 years of glory for the "eternal city." Historians mark the fall of Rome as the end of ancient history. The next one thousand years were called the Middle Ages. The Latin term for Middle Ages is "medieval." The early Middle Ages are often called the "Dark Ages" because the great civilizations of Greece and Rome had fallen. Life in Europe during the Middle Ages was very hard. Very few people could read or write and nobody expected conditions to improve. The only hope for most people during the Middle Ages was their strong belief in Christianity, and the hope that life in heaven would be better than life on earth. The Dark Ages were anything but dark in other parts of the world. The Muslims in the Middle East and North Africa studied and improved on the works of the ancient Greeks while civilization flourished in sub-Saharan Africa, China, India, and the Americas.

Welcome to
Gulf Stream, Florida Land Area:
square miles in Palm Beach County City Of Gulf Stream
This wealthy oceanfront hamlet has touches of Old Florida as well as a modern, understated elegance. Here, Main Street - State Road A1A, which winds through town - is a state-designated "scenic and historic highway;" garbage is collected from the back door; and the town's most precious possessions are 400 Australian pines that form a shady canopy over A1A.
The 712 residents prize their town's uniqueness and have fought to keep it that way. The town has some of the most restrictive zoning regulations in the county, governing window sizes, mail boxes, and even lawn ornaments.
The town faces the challenge of maintaining its character while accommodating new residents' demands for an updated city water supply system and good roads.
The Town Commission holds regular meetings the second Friday of each month at 9:30 a.m. The Architectural Review Board meets the third Wednesday of each month at 8:30 a.m. Meetings are at Town Hall, 100 Sea Road.
Population: Population Density: 1,040 people per square mile.

M.S. Concentration in Applications of Geographic Technologies
Department of Geography, University of Florida Program Description:
This program is a professional concentration in the graduate offerings of the Department of Geography aimed at the growing demands of the private and government sectors for people with technical job skills. It offers graduate education in an array of techniques to analyze, describe, and communicate spatial patterns and processes. The focus is on the application of geographic technologies (computer cartography, geographic information systems, remote sensing, and spatial quantitative methods) to practical issues such as those concerning land inventory tracking and management, environmental planning, and commercial location analysis, among others. Students who enroll in this concentration will be individuals seeking a professional specialization in state-of-the-art techniques of spatial analysis and location representation. For example, many graduates of the Geography Department are now working for state agencies such as water management districts, and private companies such as Blockbuster Video and Spatial Data 3001, in positions that use geographic technologies to support business or regulatory decisions.

Dr. Michael W. Binford, Dr. Joshua Comenetz, Dr. Grant Thrall, Dr. Peter R. Waylen

Florida, the Sunshine State Geography State Symbols People and Cities Geography Economy ... History The climate in Florida is very great! Florida was the last part of North America to emerge from the sea. When dinosaurs existed Florida was still under water. Until layers of limestone gradually settled upon the bedrock until land appeared above the surface. The highest point in Florida is in Walton County and is 345 feet. The lowest point in Florida is the sea level along the Atlantic Ocean. Florida has a variety of rich environment in prehistoric Florida supported a large amount of plants and animals. When humans first came here they stayed where there was enough water, food, and good stone for making tools. Until the people from around the world came or moved to Florida the population grew. They also started to build cities that are now major attractions such as Orlando. Florida was famous for orange juice, grapefruits, and key lime pies. Also, a lake called Lake Okeechobee. Lake Okeechobee is the largest lake in Florida.

Florida's geography, capacity protect against blackouts
BILL KACZOR
Associated Press

The isolation of Florida's electrical grid from the rest of the country, except for the Panhandle, and its self-reliant generating capacity make it less likely for a blackout to roll in from another state, utility experts said Friday. A blackout spreading from one system to another within Florida, however, is another matter, they acknowledged as parts of the Northeast, Midwest and Canada were recovering from a massive outage that began Thursday.

Cedar Key: End of John Muir's Longest Walk
In 1898, Muir took a final trip to Florida, at the age of sixty, which itself was replete with color and incident. One dramatic occurrence was the finding of Mrs. Hodgson, who had nursed him back to health on his thousand-mile walk to the Gulf. The incident is told in the following excerpt from a letter to his wife under date of November 21, 1898: Places Important to John Muir Home Alphabetical Index What's New ... Message Board

(Click on an image for 800 x 600 version) Front Text reads: JOHN MUIR AT CEDAR KEY John Muir, noted naturalist and conservation leader, spent several months in Florida in 1867. He arrived at Cedar Key in October, seven weeks after setting out from Indiana on a "thousand-mile walk to the Gulf." Muir's journal account of the adventure, which was published in 1916, two years after his death, includes interesting glimpses of the quality of life in the post- Civil War South. "The traces of war," he wrote, "are not only apparent on the broken fields, mills and woods ruthlessly slaughtered, but also on the countenances of the people." Florida deeply impressed the twenty-nine year old Muir. Back Text reads: He remembered the "watery and vide-tied" land where "the streams are still young" which he had seen and sampled on his way from Fernandina. It was while recovering from a bout with malaria in Cedar Key that Muir first expressed his belief that nature was valuable for its own sake , not only because it was useful for man. This principle guided John Muir throughout his life. In early 1868, he left Cedar key and eventually settled in California, where he helped establish the Yosemite National Park and, in 1892, the Sierra Club, which became one of our nation's best known environmental organizations.
