Course Description: A comprehensive approach to program development, from needs assessment to evaluation, will be applied to youth-based non-formal environmental education opportunities. Existing and developing programs will be analyzed, with an emphasis on the role of participation and evaluation. Required field trips to be scheduled. Course Objectives: By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  • Generate a variety of education program formats for achieving EE goals Use Bennett’s hierarchy for program planning Assess the role of stakeholder participation in program development Develop appropriate program objectives Compare practical outcomes of evaluating a program by several different models (such as Bennett’s goals, the Determinants of Behavior Change Model, or the Steps to Behavior Change Model) Conduct a needs assessment Develop evaluation tools Analyze evaluation data Observe and critique a training workshop Respond to attacks on EE programs Write a fundable grant proposal for EE program development

Barbara W. White was appointed Dean of the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin in 1993. She also holds the Centennial Professorship in Leadership. Dr. White was formerly Associate Dean at the School of Social Work at The Florida State University, where she also served as the director of the Master of Social Work program. She is a former President of the 155,000-member National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Schools of Social Work. Dr. White is also the immediate past-president of the Council on Social Work Education. Dr. White served as the president of the Florida Chapter of NASW, and was named Social Worker of the Year by the Florida Chapter. She has been a Fulbright scholar on Women's Issues in India, and received a University Teaching Award at Florida State University. In 1995, she was appointed by President Clinton to serve on the National Selective Service Appeal Board. She was inducted into the African American Women's Hall of Fame sponsored by the National Women of Achievement, Inc., and is a member of the 1998 Class of Leadership Texas. She was honored by being selected as the 1999 recipient of the International Rhoda G. Sarnat Award by the National Association of Social Workers for significant international or national contributions to advance the public image of professional social work.
