NWA SOL HIRSCH EDUCATION FUND GRANTS $500 grants are available annually for teachers in grades K-12 to improve the education of their students in Meteorology - Applications are due by 1 August each year The NWA Education Committee needs help from all members to spread the word to teachers in grades K-12 that $500 grants are available annually from the NWA to help improve the education of their students in meteorology. The teachers selected will be able to use the funds to take an accredited course in atmospheric sciences, attend a relevant workshop or conference, or purchase scientific materials or equipment for the classroom. Five grants or more are possible each year thanks to the many members who have contributed to this fund in honor of Sol Hirsch who retired in 1992 after being the NWA Executive Director for 11 years. Conferences - 2004 25th Annual International Disaster Management Conference 25th Annual International Disaster Management Conference February 5-8, 2004 Orlando, FL The Rosen Plaza Hotel Overview The 25th Annual International Disaster Management Conference 2003 has been designed to meet the educational needs of all persons and agencies involved with emergency preparedness, response, and disaster recovery. This year’s Planning Committee acknowledges the unique role that the myriad of first responders, response agencies and communities play in planning for, responding to, and mitigating disasters. The conference theme "Prepare Freedom's Lifelines..." is evident throughout all of this year’s educational programs and tracks. This past year has presented the emergency management community with several challenging events. These events, although devastating, have produced an opportunity to learn from adversity and serve as the basis for many of our educational sessions. The Planning Committee worked hard to recognize the diversity of the myriad of disaster management and response agencies and their unique educational needs. We have designed the

(95/96: 80.0) Condition Descriptions, Objectives and Strategies Education and Job training Experience of the department has indicated that offenders sentenced to prison or to community supervision often lack knowledge, skills, and work experience needed to function successfully in the free community. Few programs or services for offenders provide successful results for all participants. Many programs do help significant numbers of participants become productive citizens and turn away from continued criminal activity. According to a 1997 study done by the University of Florida, over 90% of the Florida residents surveyed believe offenders should receive education services and substance abuse treatment.
