See if you can locate any aerial photos of a rural and urban area. Allow students to work on examining the photos and see if they can construct a land use map out of these resources. It will require them to carefully observe the agricultural areas and the developed areas. It would be a great addition if you could get two photos from different time periods. Students could make a list of the land uses and then create a land use map out of what they observe.
Discuss and debate the complex topic of public lands - ex. "whose waterway is it anyway?"
Create two opposing panels that will research opposite perspectives of a debate on environmental protection vs. recreational use (such as manatees vs. recreational boaters, or Yellowstone preservation vs. snowmobile enthusiasts). Create a neutral set of judges who will "judge" the merits of each side's argument and declare a winner.
Create a plan that will "save" a wild area from development.

GIS DAY - GIS: Improving Kissimmee through Technology
~Mapping The Future of Kissimmee Kissimmee, Florida -City of Kissimmee announces GIS Day, November 22, 2002. The City of Kissimmee will host an open house showcasing how our City uses GIS to make better decisions and manage the services it provides to the residents. The location will be in the lobby of City Hall, 101 N. Church Street, from 11:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. with prizes, give-a-ways, BBQ, baked goods, and presentations (11:30, 12:30, 1:30).
Held each year during the National Geographic Society's Geography Awareness Week (November 18-22), GIS Day is a global event that celebrates GIS, the exciting technology that uses geography to change the world. If you are curious about GIS and how your City takes advantage of this technology, you will be able to see it in action at City Hall.
A GIS is a computer-based mapping tool that takes information from a database about a place, such as streets, buildings, water features, and terrain, and turns it into visual layers. Being able to see all of these features on one map gives you a better understanding of a particular location and enables planners and analysts to make informed decisions about their communities.

The New York Times View this article in The New York Times Honor for Dr. King Splits Florida City, and Faces Reversal By ABBY GOODNOUGH, The New York Times Its new name, Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, has been tearing Zephyrhills apart. Last October, Irene Dobson, a black woman, asked the City Council to rename the street for Dr. King, as hundreds of places have done since his death in 1968. The Council voted 4 to 1 on Oct. 27 to honor her request and ordered new signs for the street that had been Sixth Avenue. The protests quickly began. A petition to recall the council members arose, along with another to overturn the decision. Sixth Avenue residents said that the Council had railroaded the plan without consulting them and that they did not want the bother of changing their addresses. A business owner told local newspapers that property values would fall, saying streets named after Dr. King were a guarantee of economic blight. Their battle mirrors dozens that have erupted around the country over plans to rename streets for Dr. King, but with a twist: on Monday, the City Council is to finalize a reversal of its vote and remove Dr. King's name. The decision would put Zephyrhills among only a handful of cities that have put up street signs bearing Dr. King's name, then taken them down because of community uproar. Accusations of racism are swirling, supporters of the name change are picketing City Hall, and a white supremacist Web site is praising the Council's change of heart.
