Ryan Jensen is preparing to collect leaf area index and other biophysical measurements in north central Florida. Gainesville residents are raking in a cool average household energy savings of $126 per year, thanks to their trees, concludes a recent University of Florida (UF) study. UF researchers R.R. Jensen and Michael Binford compared average energy consumption per household in the Florida cities of Gainesville and Ocala and found that Gainesville's denser tree canopy offers its residents lower per-household electricity bills. Jensen chose to compare electricity use in these two cities, which are just 30 miles apart, because of their similarities. The likenesses include similar types of trees, ecosystems, climate, geology, topography, natural vegetation, population, and number of degree-days. "They both have about the same number of lakes nearby, and everything else is just about the same," says Michael Binford, associate professor of geography at the University of Florida, Gainesville. "The only thing that wasn't the same was the tree canopy coverage, which is denser in Gainesville." Jensen developed an artificial neural network (ANN) to more accurately measure a city's leaf area index (LAI), using remotely sensed imagery collected by satellite. Jensen applied the ANN to area maps of the cities and then computed the average LAI of each city. Gainesville's average LAI was 4.6 m

The NW of Florida is a gently rolling panhandle area, cut into by deep swamps along the Gulf coast. The St. Marys River in the northeast and the Perdido River in the northwest form part of the boundary with Georgia and Alabama. Much of the east coast is shielded from the Atlantic Ocean by narrow sandbars and barrier islands that protect the shallow lagoons, rivers, and bays. Immediately inland, pine and palmetto flatlands stretch from the Georgia border almost to the southern tip of the state. Central Florida abounds in lakes, with Lake Okeechobee being the largest. The

    Abbreviation:
FL Florida was named by the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León in 1513. He called the region "La Florida", roughly translated as Land of the Flowers. He probably chose this name because he was impressed by the many colorful flowers and because he sighted it on Easter, which is called "Pascua Florida" in Spanish. Ponce de Leon, in search of the elusive fountain of youth, was the first European to explore Florida. Statehood for Florida came in 1845 (27th state). St. Augustine, founded by the Spanish in 1565, is the oldest permanent European settlement in the continental United States. Florida is one of the leading tourist states in the United States. Great stretches of sandy beaches and a warm, sunny climate make Florida a year-round vacationland. People enjoy swimming, fishing and water skiing in the inland and coastal waters. Major attractions include Disney World, Miami Beach, the Everglades National Park and the Florida Keys. Tourists may also visit historic sites that date back to the Spanish explorers.

Geography Lesson The Florida peninsula called Pinellas is surrounded by water on three sides. It is shaped very much like the state of Florida. And like the state, on the west is the Gulf of Mexico. The east and south sides of the county face Tampa Bay, an area whose bountiful waters first attracted native Indian settlers many hundreds of years ago. Map need acrobat reader? Pinellas is part of a four-county metropolitan statistical area (MSA) referred to as Tampa Bay. It includes Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco and Hernando.
The Tampa Bay area has three nationally recognized cities that are critical to market studies of this area. They are Tampa (in Hillsborough County), St. Petersburg and Clearwater (both in Pinellas County). An extensive network of roads and highways traverse Pinellas County, joining one community with another. The major thoroughfare is I-275, which runs north and south connecting the area with the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Manatee County to the south, and the Howard Frankland Bridge and Hillsborough County to the northeast. I-275 also connects with I-4 going east to Orlando from Tampa and I-75 heading north. U.S. 19 is an important north-south link that runs the entire length of Pinellas, Search StPete.com:

Graphic GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Florida’s major cities have slipped further behind in the race for high-speed Internet access, a trend that impacts residents’ and companies’ ability to take advantage of burgeoning Internet services such as video conferencing. A new study by Ed Malecki, a University of Florida geography professor, has found that although the amount of bandwidth available in Florida’s major metropolitan areas has increased significantly in the past two years, it has failed to keep pace with the increase at other major cities nationally. As a result, the Jacksonville, Tampa-St. Petersburg and Miami-Ft. Lauderdale areas all now rank further below other major cities in bandwidth availability on long-distance Internet backbones than they did in the initial survey in 1998. Only Orlando, Florida’s best-connected city, has moved up in the rankings, rising from the city with the 24th highest bandwidth in the nation in 1998 to 20th this year, the study shows. "Relatively speaking, we’re falling behind, even if we’re absolutely gaining," Malecki said.

Where Are You on the Talent Map?
What's the secret to power hiring? Location, location, location. If you want to attract the right kind of people, it's not enough to be the right kind of company. Your company needs to be in the right kind of place. From: Issue 42 January 2001, Page 102 By: Bill Breen Photographs by: Kate Swan Illustrations by: Bruce McCall Want to get a quick take on how your city or region is faring in the all-out competition for talent? Start by determining the percentage of gays that are in your population. The "gay index" is the leading predictor of a city's ability to attract and retain knowledge workers, claims Richard Florida, founder and director of the Software Industry Center at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University and professor of regional economic development. It's not that gay employees themselves are critical for building a tech-savvy base of operations. It's that a gay population is a dependable indicator of the environmental factors tolerance, openness to diversity, and lots of urban-oriented amenities that are critical for attracting world-class workers.
