Assessing the floods' damage
(CNN) Following is a recap of the effects of flooding in some central European countries:
  • Czech Republic
  • Prague faced some of the worst flooding in its history, prompting the removal of 400 animals from its zoo. A chemical plant near Prague started leaking Thursday, spewing potentially deadly chlorine gas into the air. Officials estimate the costs of cleaning Prague could surpass $2 billion.
  • Austria
  • The flooding is being called the worst for a century in Austria, where thousands of people have been evacuated from the Salzburg and Upper Austria provinces. Johannes Guger, head of international relations for the Red Cross, told CNN that seven people had been killed in the floods. ( Full Story Eight-thousand soldiers and firefighters were struggling to shore up weakening dams with sandbags, but the raging Danube has already broken through defences in the town of Ybbs in Lower Austria province.

    Environmental Health Center
Air Quality Problems Caused by Floods
How Are Floodwaters an Indoor Air Quality Problem?
During a flood cleanup, the indoor air quality in your home may appear to be the least of your problems. However, failure to remove contaminated materials and to reduce moisture and humidity can present serious long-term health risks. Standing water and wet materials in the home can become a breeding ground for microorganisms: bacteria, mold, and viruses. They can cause disease, trigger allergic reactions, and continue to damage materials long after the flood.
    What Are the Health Effects?
Standing water is a breeding ground for microorganisms, which can become airborne and then can be inhaled. When floodwaters contain sewage or decaying animal carcasses, infectious disease is of concern. Even if the water appears clean, microorganisms can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. For these health reasons, and also to lessen structural damage, all standing water should be removed as quickly as possible. Excess moisture in the home is an indoor air quality concern in several ways:
    • Microorganisms in floodwaters may present a health hazard. These organisms can penetrate deep into soaked, porous materials and later be released into air or water. Coming in contact with air or water that contains these organisms can cause illness.

ENPA MAIN PAGE ABOUT EXMOOR the lyn MOUTH floods of 1952 the lyn MOUTH Floods of 1952 Moorland Vegetation and Soils The catchment area of the Lyn rivers totals 39.2 sq. miles, much of which is plateau drained by steep sided combes. The plateau is covered in parts by moorland grasses growing from a wet, peaty ground and in others by heather and bracken on well drained soils. These soils do not extend much further than 4 feet deep (Wolf 1953). S.H Burton, author of Exmoor wrote in the journal Weather in 1952, "The Chains is the name given to the north-west plateau of Exmoor. This plateau lies above the 1,500 foot contour, its higher point such as Chapman Barrows, Wood Barrow and Chains Barrow being nearly up to the 1,600 foot line. It is the watershed between the rivers flowing south and west - the Barle and the Exe and their tributaries, and the rivers flowing to the north - Farley Water and Hoaroak Water, the main tributaries of the East Lyn, and the West Lyn with its numerous feeders.
The soil of Exmoor is of two kinds. The dry-lands is loamy on top and clayed below and drains rapidly. It is to be found mainly in the valleys of Exmoor and, though it is deficient in lime, heavy dressing makes it fertile. The wet land soil is peaty. Just below the surface a thin ironstone pan occurs which prevents drainage until the pan is cracked by subsoil ploughing" (Burton, 1952. 334).

H ERE AT H ARPERS F ERRY WHERE THE WATERS OF THE P OTOMAC AND S HENANDOAH RIVERS converge, floods have inundated the Lower Town since the first white settlers arrived here more than two centuries ago. The town's more memorable floods are listed below. According to local legend, floodwaters drove Robert Harper from the log cabin he had acquired from Peter Stephens. "The Pumpkin Flood," so named for the great numbers of pumpkins washed down from the gardens of nearby Indian villages. The greatest flood since the first settlers arrived at Harpers Ferry. Waterpower dams on the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers suffered considerable damage. (September 30-October 1). The Shenandoah River rose so rapidly that residents were trapped on Virginius Island. Floodwaters swept away much of the island's homes and industry and claimed 42 lives at Harpers Ferry. (October 1). One of the worst floods in the town's history. The rivers crested at 33.0 feet.

Cities along Red River prepare for floods
Houses and businesses are closed Monday after heavy flooding over the weekend in Breckenridge, Minnesota ON THE NEWS Jeff Flock: Flood prevention activities in South Dakota BRECKENRIDGE, Minnesota (CNN) Hundreds of residents and volunteers worked Monday to build a wall of sandbags around Breckenridge to protect people and property from the rising Red River and its tributaries. Four years ago the river overflowed its banks and caused devastating damage in what was dubbed "the flood of the century" in North Dakota and Minnesota. Farm fields across the region already have been turned into lakes and, with the rivers still rising, the situation is expected to get worse. "I can't believe we're doing this again," Breckenridge Mayor Cliff Barth said on CNN. "This is only four years after our major flood last time, and it's brought back a lot of hard memories." Breckenridge and its partner city on the opposite bank, Wahpeton, North Dakota, lie where the Bois de Sioux and Otter Tail rivers meet to form the Red River. The rivers are expected to be pushed higher by rain, which is forecast for the region midweek, and higher temperatures, which will melt snow still on the ground.

With a host of spacecraft at Mars or being readied to go there over the next two years, scientists are poised to uncover the planet's liquid secrets. The big question: Was Mars once warm and wet?
Was this Mars? A crater called Fesenkov, imagined here to be full of water. Gallery of Renderings
Images © Kees Veenenbos , republished with permission Simple to pose, but not easy to answer. While many scientists think Mars may once have harbored vast oceans or lakes, there is no proof beyond some presumed ancient shorelines, sediment deposits , and other highly sketchy data or pictures. The question is important because liquid water is a key ingredient for life as we know it. While evidence is rolling in from two spacecraft currently orbiting Mars, an artist has taken some liberties with some of that data to create a series of renderings showing what Mars might once have looked like.
