Food Safety in Hurricanes and Floods
Advance preparation is a key to food safety during a hurricane and the floods that can accompany it. Those living in hurricane areas should keep adequate supplies on hand because power will likely be disrupted, putting food in danger.
EMERGENCY SUPPLIES
  • Food and water for four to five days Hand can opener Battery-powered radio Extra batteries Camp stove or other emergency cooking equipment Flashlights, candles, matches, kerosene lamp Fire extinguisher and first aid kit
FLOODING AND FOOD
Flooding often accompanies hurricanes. Persons living in areas subject to floods should be ready to raise refrigerators or freezers by putting cement blocks under their corners. Canned goods and other foods kept in a basement or low cabinets should be moved higher. Flood waters may carry silt, raw sewage, oil or chemical waste. If foods have been in contact with flood waters, follow the "Safe Handling" recommendations.
HURRICANE "WATCH"
If the National Weather Service announces a hurricane watch, expect hurricane conditions within 24 hours.

Massive floods trigger India aid package
Residents of eastern India try to stem the tide of rising waters NEW DELHI, India India will give one billion rupees to aid thousands of people marooned in its eastern state of Orissa after torrential rains set off flash floods. "The situation is very serious... The prime minister has approved the immediate release of one billion rupees ($21.23 million)," cabinet spokesman Pramod Mahajan told reporters in the capital, New Delhi. Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had asked the federal government for two billion rupees in relief for his state where floods have killed at least 23 people, washed away 4,000 houses and damaged 14,000 homes in the past 10 days. Some 7,200 villages have been cut off and half a million people are believed to be marooned in different parts of India after the floods. The largest dam in the eastern Indian state of Orissa was threatening to overflow as rivers rose to dangerously high levels following torrential rains.

The floods are not expected to affecta visit to Bangladesh by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter By staff and wires DHAKA, Bangladesh Schools were closed and thousands fled their inundated homes in northern Bangladesh after floods caused by heavy monsoon rains swamped more villages and affected nearly 200,000 people. Authorities said Thursday at least 15,000 villagers had taken shelter atop raised ground or mud embankments in the worst hit Sylhet and Sunamganj districts. The region is 190 kilometers (120 miles) northeast of the capital, Dhaka, and borders on the Indian states of Assam and Meghalaya. On Tuesday and Wednesday, floodwaters entered 55 more frontier villages in Sylhet district, closing schools and stores, Dhaka's Flood Warning Center said.

Bangladesh floods seen to worsen
Monsoon rains have swollen Bangladesh rivers beyond danger levels DHAKA, Bangladesh Chest-high flood waters stranded nearly 100,000 Bangladeshi islanders on Wednesday, after days of incessant monsoon rains. Four feet (1.3 meters) of water were being held back by an embankment built to keep out the sea on the island of Sandwip in the Bay of Bengal. "Efforts are under way to let the water roll into the sea," one official said without giving details. Meteorology officials said more flash floods may be expected, as heavy rains are seen to continue for several more days. Monsoon rains, which last from June to September, have already swollen three rivers beyond danger levels in northeast Bangladesh, threatening early floods. Some 13 inches (330 mm) of rain fell in the region in the 24 hours to Wednesday morning, raising water levels in the Manu, Kushiyara, and Khowai rivers. Other major rivers across the country were also rising, the Flood Information Centre said in a bulletin.

http://www.germantown.k12.il.us/html/floods.html
Grade 7 Natural Disasters Project A flood occurs when a body of water rises and overflows onto normally dry land. The effects of floods, both beneficial and destructive, have been recorded for at least 5,000 years, serving as the basis for myth, religious beliefs, and scientific study. The most familiar flood story is that in the Old Testament tale. The event upon which this tale is based may have actually occurred about 3000 BC, when the Euphrates River overflowed, covering a vast area. According to the Bible, the flood resulted from 40 days of continual rain, producing high water that lasted 150 days and flood depths in excess of 25 ft. The benefits of regular flooding were appreciated in ancient Egypt, where the floodwaters of the Nile brought fertile silt and much-needed water to the fields each year. The pharaohs, recognizing that flooding meant prosperity, levied higher taxes after floods. Accordingly, the oldest records of stream levels are from the Nile. Flooding has probably been more intensely studied and more carefully recorded than any other natural phenomenon since the birth of civilization. Types of Floods Floods are classified in various ways for many special purposes. In the most useful general classifications, coastal flooding of lakes and oceans is distinguished from river flooding.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) Floods unleashed by torrential rains killed at least 43 people in the Dominican Republic as rivers rushed over their banks and hundreds of homes were damaged, an official said Monday. At least 40 people were killed in the western town of Jimani near the Haitian border after a river flooded part of the town Sunday, National Emergency Commission director Radhames Lora Salcedo told The Associated Press. No further details were immediately available. Those deaths and three others elsewhere Sunday came as the government sought to deal with the aftermath of fierce rainstorms over the weekend. In northern San Francisco de Macoris, two men died when they were swept away by an overflowing river, Lora Salcedo said. Another man died when he was caught in strong currents as he fished off the coast, officials said. About 450 homes were flooded throughout the Caribbean country, and at least 14 small towns had power outages and toppled phone lines, Lora Salcedo said.

The Climate of Chile

Chile is a uniquely shaped country, with a north-south range of 4300 km and an east-west range of about 175 km. The Andes mountain range runs along the spine of the country, with the Pacific Ocean lying along the entire western border. It is Chile's unusual shape, proximity to the Pacific Ocean, and its varied terrain that together dictate the country's widely variable climate.

The evolution of weather forecasting
Humans have always tried to predict the weather but it wasn't until the 1940's that any formal attempt at forecasting began to take shape. We take weather forecasts for granted these days. But forecasting is a recent technological advance. It was with the rise of computers, radar systems, satellite, and television that weather prediction took-off during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.
