How Safe Is It?
Safety is Issue Number One in Flight Training
By Bruce Landsberg W hen someone considers learning to fly, the question of safety invariably comes up. How safe is flying in a light airplane? How safe is driving a car or boat? It depends on the circumstances. Compared to automobiles, general aviation defined as all kinds of flying except for the airlines and military has about one-tenth as many accidents on a per-vehicle-mile basis, and the accident rate has dropped steadily since 1980. There are several reasons why the safety record is as good as it is. Training for a pilot certificate is much more rigorous than it is for a driver's license. Mandatory ground and flight training, along with written and practical tests, help to ensure that pilots have achieved a basic level of proficiency. Periodic recurrent training helps to maintain and improve skills. The environment in which aircraft operate is much more closely regulated, as well. The regulations have evolved over the years to address accident prevention, and most pilots prefer to use regulations as a minimum guideline to exceed in their own flight operations.

How video games influenced the attack on America

Forward in
Format for What's being called the Attack on America is going to change things in many ways, both large and small, some predictable, some not so easy to predict. One of the small issues is that users of Microsoft's Flight Simulator game will no longer be able to crash a simulated 757 into a realistic graphic of the World Trade Center. Yet this small changea concession by Microsoft to not offend its customersbrings up the larger issue of gaming and learning. It has already played an actual role in the attackswith the terrorists using flight simulators used to train commercial pilots to hone their deadly skillsand could play another role in the outcome. YOU MIGHT ARGUE that a flight simulator doesn't have much in common with a Microsoft game. But if those simulators are anything more than giant video games with great control consoles, then I don't know what they are. Games and simulators can teach many things. In fact, as much time as young people spend with them, they can hardly help but learn something. But what?

FLIGHT SCHOOL XXI (FSXXI) SIMULATION SERVICES REQUIREMENTS DOCUMENT (SSRD) 2 June 2003 General Description of Operational Capability Statement of the Need In the 1970s and 1980s, a flight training program known as "single-track" was used to train Army helicopter pilots.  In the single-track program, training began with a three-month contact phase in a training aircraft (initially H-13s, then TH-55s).  During the contact phase, basic aircraft handling techniques and rotary-wing aerodynamics and capabilities were taught.  This introductory phase was followed by an eight-week instruments phase with four weeks in the UH-1H simulator and four weeks in the UH-1H aircraft.  This phase of training covered the tasks required to fly in and above the clouds with no visual ground reference.  Following instruments, flight students received three months of basic combat skills training in either the OH-58C or the UH-1H aircraft.  The graduating aviators were then awarded wings and either sent to a unit to fly UH-1H or OH-58C aircraft or retained at Fort Rucker for additional training in a more advanced aircraft.  This system worked well when the Army still had UH-1H and OH-58C aircraft in combat units.  That is no longer the case.  Combat units are currently fielded with AH-64A, AH-64D, UH-60, OH-58D, and CH-47 aircraft.  Therefore, all graduating flight students must immediately attend an Aircraft Qualification Course (AQC) in an advanced aircraft.  To compound the problem, AQCs were originally designed to teach experienced aviators how to fly an additional aircraft, not to teach new aviators with no field experience.

Updated 6/21/2001
Well, it seems that once again, Microsoft has their act together in the early beta and has added some minor tweaks to their final release to make sure it has what is needed in a commercial product. The performance optimizations make the game even smoother than it was before. Lower-end machines will finally be able to experience the high attention to detail that the series has always provided, without having to turn down every detail. As I said before, gamers who are looking for a true-to-life simulation have to look no farther than Microsoft Train Simulator. It may be tedious at first, but before you know it, you will be handling your train like a pro. -==KapTeNKrYloN==- The Beta Information I remember the first time I played Microsoft Flight Simulator. I had visions of the golden days of playing Aces of the Pacific and flying like a pro. I installed MSFS, and I realized that Aces was a kid's toy compared to the realism and accuracy portrayed by Microsoft.

Introduction
Trouble strikes on the 800 mile trans-Alaskan pipeline with no time for hesitation. So when Martin Colt detects a crude oil leak, he quickly diagnoses the problem and hits the appropriate switches on Pump Station No.8's control panel to close a valve 25 kilometres down the line. Crisis is averted. Martin, an operations technician notes the time it took for him to complete the task. Although only a simulation, the above scenario is effective in providing feedback on Colt's performance and preparing him for potential crisis situations. Due to the risk involved in this type of scenario and many like it, it is imperative that performance standards of 100% are achieved. Any less would be unacceptable - more so when human life is at risk. In order to achieve such performance, allowing Martin to practice on the live system would not be feasible. By providing a simulated environment, Martin learns by actually performing the activity to be learned, in a context that is similar to the real world. Thus the general aim of interactive computer-based simulation is to provide the learner with practice of the behaviour he/she will be called upon to exhibit in reality. Simulation development is expensive so it is usually undertaken when poor performance in "real life" would lead to major problems or other factors such as time, risk and resource availability are involved. In general, simulations are used when:

Can Neurobiology Teach us Anything about Consciousness?
Patricia Smith Churchland
University of California, San Diego
Salk Institute
I Introduction:
Human nervous systems display an impressive roster of complex capacities, including the following: perceiving, learning and remembering, planning, deciding, performing actions, as well as the capacities to be awake, fall asleep, dream, pay attention, and be aware. Although neuroscience has advanced spectacularly in this century, we still do not understand in satisfying detail how any capacity in the list emerges from networks of neurons. We do not completely understand how humans can be conscious, but neither do we understand how they can walk, run, climb trees or pole vault. Nor, when one stands back from it all, is awareness intrinsically more mysterious than motor control. Balanced against the disappointment that full understanding eludes us still, is cautious optimism, based chiefly on the nature of the progress behind us. For cognitive neuroscience has already passed well beyond what skeptical philosophers once considered possible, and continuing progress seems likely. In assuming that neuroscience can reveal the physical mechanisms subserving psychological functions, I am assuming that it is indeed the brain that performs those functions that capacities of the humans mind are in fact capacities of the human brain. This assumption and its corollary rejection of Cartesian souls or spirits or "spooky stuff" existing separately from the brain is no whimsy. On the contrary, it is a highly probable hypothesis, based on evidence currently available from physics, chemistry, neuroscience and evolutionary biology. In saying that physicalism is an hypothesis, I mean to emphasize its status as an empirical matter. I do not assume that it is a question of conceptual analysis, a priori insight, or religious faith, though I appreciate that not all philosophers are at one with me on this point.

The reality is that many are not prepared. Students seem to lose interest in math and science when they can't understand the relevance of these subjects to their daily lives. There appears to be a gap between what students learn in textbooks and how it applies to "real life." The National Flight Academy intends to bridge that gap.
The Naval Aviation Museum Foundation is currently in the midst of a $36 million Capital Campaign that will allow us to take the National Flight Academy vision to reality. Microsoft flight Simulator became a best selling software package in the one of a group of paths and activities at any Interactive simulation for Counselors.
http://jtc.colstate.edu/vol1_1/simulation.htm
Abstract Efforts to teach basic helping skills to counselors in training using computer assisted simulation continue to evolve. Recent commercial releases include integration of compressed video and text to allow students to view client/counselor interactions and make choices regarding response categories.
The use of technological tools to teach basic skills in counselor education and supervision has evolved steadily over the years. From audiotape to videotape, from computer text to interactive multimedia simulation, counselor educators and supervisors have made numerous attempts to integrate new technologies into counselor training ( http://www.ed.gov/databases/ERIC_Digests/ed372357.html]
Historical Developments
Audiotape, first through reel-to-reel and later through eight-track and cassettes, was adopted during the 1950s and 60s to teach skills. Counseling students used this medium to learn from “the masters” in pre-recorded sessions. Students also created their own audiotapes of counseling sessions in order to demonstrate their competence and obtain feedback regarding their performance. Videotape later became the dominant tool in demonstrating counseling skills and measuring student progress. From the 1970s through the 1990s, widespread use of videotape led to more sophisticated tools. Simultaneous split-screen videotaping of client and counselor allowed more accurate capturing of nonverbal cues. Remote viewing of a demonstration session using one or more monitors allowed the session to take place with more privacy, eliminating the obvious presence of student spectators. Stereo audio channels in videotape allowed dual use of those channels, with the counseling session recorded on one track and supervisor comments on a second track. Similarly, text based comments by a supervisor can now be superimposed on the bottom of the videotaped counseling session with appropriate hardware.

Tony Landers, Conference Convenor

Since commencing in 1996, the annual SimTecT Conference and Exhibition has steadily grown to become the highlight of our region's simulation calendar. Last year, the Simulation Industry Association of Australia and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons introduced the Medical Simulation Symposium as a part of SimTecT 2000 , and this present Conference builds on the considerable interest generated.
This is a wonderful opportunity to share the experience of diverse industries and applications in order to maximize the benefits for all participants from the utilization of simulation. I look forward to seeing you there.
Dr Patrick Cregan, Medical Simulation Society Convenor
Since the initial Medical Simulation Symposium publicity in December, there has been extensive interest expressed from many medical specialties, industry, and academics - both from Australia and overseas.
The day has been structured to be full and fast moving, covering simulation technologies and clinical applications. We are fortunate that Dr Richard Satava, world-renowned simulation advocate, is able to share his experiences and wisdom with us as our Keynote Speaker. The inaugural meeting of the Medical Simulation Society then provides a venue for discussion, networking, and action plans. It should be a worthwhile day, and I hope you will make the most of this opportunity.
