The Flea - What is it?
Fleas are parasites. Defined by the Concise Oxford English Dictionary as 'self-seeking hangers-on' or 'toadies', they live by living on something else, drawing nutriment directly from it. In the fleas case, this means drinking the 'host' animals blood. Siphonaptera is the Latin name for the collective species of flea and there are around 3,000 different species currently recognised by Siphonapterists in Britain. 95% of these occur on mammals with around 5% occurring on birds. Whatever an adult flea is living on is referred to as the 'host' and different species of flea are usually named after the 'host' on which they were first discovered or are most usually found - cat flea, dog flea, hedgehog or rabbit flea for example. However, fleas are not always peculiar only to their namesakes. For example, the most common flea on both dogs and cats is Ctenocephalides felis - the cat flea, but both cats and dogs can also occasionally be affected by other fleas such as rabbit and bird fleas. Ctenocephalides canis - the dog flea (which was previously found in great numbers on dogs, but rarely on cats) is becoming more scarce as dogs are more frequently kept in environments similar to that of our pet cats.

HOUSEHOLD INSECTS Last Updated: 4/15/2003 Eric P. Benson and Patricia A. Zungoli, Extension Urban Entomologists Insect Control (FOR PUBLIC USE) FLEAS General Instructions: Prevention is the key to proper flea control. If you had a problem the past year, consider calling a professional pest control operator no later than the end of March to initiate a program. If not using a professional, homeowners should also begin their own flea control program no later than the end of March to avoid heavy flea populations. Proper control of fleas on pets, as well as on pet bedding and resting areas on the same day, is a must for lasting control. Vacuum carpets thoroughly with a beater-brush attachment to take up eggs and larval food source in carpet before treating carpet. Dispose of vacuum cleaner bag outside the house immediately. Vacuum at least twice a week until flea populations subside. Steam cleaning carpets will also help decrease flea populations, especially in the absence of pets. Concentrate treatment on pet and pet resting areas. In recent years, several products have been developed as pills, sprays or topical spot treatments. These treatments enter the pet's body and circulate through the dog's or cat's blood. When adult fleas feed on treated blood

Fleas Fleas are blood-sucking insects. Only the adults are injurious. Adult fleas are small, wingless insects with laterally compressed bodies. They are dark brown or reddish brown insects. Their size ranges from 1-4mm long. Their stout hind legs are well adapted for jumping from one host to another, reaching maximum distances of 20cm (vertically) and 41 cm (horizontally). They feed preferentially animal blood but will bite humans as well. Females will deposit their eggs on floor rugs, etc. A female flea can produce 25 eggs per day and up to 800 per lifetime. The eggs are tiny, usually going unnoticed. Once they hatch (larval stage), they feed on dry organic matter such as adult droppings, old skins, scales or hair. They are small, hairy, wormlike larvae that are whitish with brownish heads. They start off at about 1.5mm and grow to about 5mm long. During this developmental stage they avoid light and are sensitive to climatic changes. When mature, the larvae spin cocoons and mature into the adult stage.

      Introduction
God in his wisdom made the fly
And then forgot to tell us why
Ogden Nash Nash's witticism could easily be applied to all the critters that bug pets and people during summer months The world is a wondrous place where hundreds of thousands of animals and plants interact to form the environment as we know it. Each creature has carved its own niche a place where it eats, reproduces, and survives to reproduce again, for such is the nature of things. Man has chosen certain animals and plants to enhance his own niche, but some unwanted critters have come along for the ride, critters that could be more prevalent in any "spring of the swampy backyard." Moisture and heat are the prime ingredients for burgeoning populations of fleas, flies, mosquitoes, and other pests that bug Bowser by biting, stinging, and spreading disease. These critters can easily be divided into two groups those that seek Bowser for a blood meal and those that bite or sting as a defensive mechanism. The former group includes fleas, flies, ticks, and mosquitoes; the latter includes wasps, bees, ants, spiders, and centipedes.

    RIDDING YOUR HOME OF FLEAS
by Mike Potter, Extension Entomologist University of Kentucky College of Agriculture
Ridding a home of fleas can be a frustrating and costly endeavor. Unlike some pests encountered around the home, fleas cause discomfort and irritation to both pets and people. Fleas account for more than half of all dermatological conditions requiring veterinary assistance, and even a single flea bite to a hypersensitive animal or person may cause intense itching and irritation. For successful flea control, the home, pet and oftentimes, the yard must be treated. Yet the manner in which these treatments are performed can greatly influence the results. The following information will help frustrated pet owners effectively rid their homes and pets of fleas.
    Essential Facts About Fleas
(the biting stage seen by pet owners) spend most of their time on the animal, not in the carpet. This is why treatment of the pet in conjunction with the pet's environment is an essential step in ridding a home of fleas. Adult fleas lay all of their eggs (up to 50 per day) on the pet. However, the eggs soon fall off the animal into carpeting, beneath the cushions of furniture, and wherever else the pet rests, sleeps or spends most of its time. This is where homeowners should focus control measures.

Insects are in the phylum of Arthropods and comprise of over 1 million species. That is more than all other species of animal life combined. In fact insects make up close to 85% of all known animal species. Most insects have wings at some point in their lives, though not all. All insects have six legs and three unique body sections. The three sections are the Head, the Thorax, and the Abdomen. They have a tough outer section called an exoskeleton. Insects breath through tiny holes called spiracles along the sides of their bodies. All insects lay eggs, and most go through four stages of metamorphosis. Grasshoppers Cockroaches Earwigs and Aphids will go through only three stages of growth. They live in virtually all kinds of habitats including rainforests, deserts, hot thermal pools, frozen tundra lands, and remarkably, even in pools of gasoline.

    Fighting Fleas and Ticks
by Dixie Farley Back from vacationing at the beach, Fido and Kitty sniff out familiar haunts around the yard. Meanwhile, their owner, Mary, plops down on the family room carpet with a month's mail. Mary scratches an ankle, then the other one, then a leg. Then she looks down and sees why she's scratching: Fleas! Although Fido and Kitty are flea-free after dog and cat pesticide dips at the beach, the house is not. During the weeks before vacation, fleas feeding and breeding on the pets deposited unborn offspring all over the homestead. And during the vacation, fleas at various life stages evolved, nourished by dried-blood flea excrement, "flea dirt," in the carpet and elsewhere. The result: A population explosion of fleas ravenous for fresh blood. The scenario is fictional. But it depicts this fact: Left uncontrolled, bloodsucking pests can infest not just your cat or dog, but your entire houseand you! Common household fleas don't usually transmit diseases to pets and people. (See "Human Problems."

    Boric Acid
If a product can kill a cockroach it is probably not good for humans either. Many pesticides are extremely harmful to the human nervous system, so safer, non-toxic remedies are a wise choice.
Boric Acid, a white powder, is mined from the Mojave Desert in California and is nature's proven long-term treatment in eliminating Cockroaches, Palmetto bugs, Waterbugs, Ants, Silverfish, Carpenter Ants, and Termites.
This chemical has many interesting and useful characteristics. A few are discussed here such as use as an insecticide, a preservative, and a fire retardant.
The first use of borates as an insecticide was in 1922 when P.F. Harris invented the Roach Tablet. It evolved into many products including today’s “Roach Motel”.
By 1985 there were over 200 registered pesticides containing borates.
In 1955 framing lumber in New Foundland began being treated with borates to control an epidemic of termite destruction. Since then, none of the homes using borate treated wood has had any infestation of termites or wood decay.
In the 1970’s Europe and the US began studying borates for wood preserving properties. There was a huge lawsuit involving an US lumber company that put tropical hardwoods in over 1000 homes. The hardwood had beetles in the wood. The homes were treated with borates and the hardwood mills in South America began pre-treating their wood with borates. Since then there have been NO problems with beetles.
