Figure 1 Ctenocephalides felis felis Flea infestations of pets and the home environment are a common occurrence. Fleas are responsible for the production and transmission of several diseases of humans and their pets. The flea that causes most of the problems is Ctenocephalides felis felis the common cat flea. In one study it accounted for 92 to 990f the fleas found on dogs and cats respectively.(1)
The flea passes through 4 stages in its life cycle. It undergoes a complete metamorphosis at each stage.(2) At any time, about 570f the fleas are eggs, 34% are larva, 8% are pupa, and only about 1% are present as adults. The life cycle can be completed in as little as 12 days or take as long as 174 days and is dependent upon the ambient temperature and humidity.(3) Flea eggs are oval, pearly white, non-sticky and about 0.5 mm in length.(4) The egg hatches between 1 and 10 days of being deposited on the host and falling off into the environment

Insect Controller® This battery operated state-of-the-art electronic device is specially designed to repel spiders , ticks and fleas (up to 6 metres operational radius). Unlike humans and mammals with more sophisticated and complex hearing organs, insects and spiders respond to ultrasonic soundwaves through antennae, wings, body hairs and rudimentry eardrums. These mechanical vibrations trigger neural impulses to cause behavioural modification. This affects food consumption, reproduction, communication and other biological factors. Pests eventually leave because of the abnormal environment they are exposed to.

What are snow fleas, and how to identify them
What are snow fleas, they love the snow, but are often present year round in moderate temperature areas. Learn all about this insect.
bodyOffer(29337) Snow fleas are commonly called springtails and even though they love the snow, are often present during the colder months of moderate temperature areas. These minute insects from the Hypogastruridae family and Collembola order are known as the Hypogastrura nivicola species. No larger than 1/8 inch long, these stout bodied, wingless insects jump so quickly when they are disturbed that it appears they have simply disappeared. Unlike other fleas, the diet of the snow fleas consist mainly of the mold and fungus found on decaying leaf matter. The best way to observe these amazing little creatures is to place you hand on top of the snow in an area that is peppered with snow fleas. Before long you will notice that the tiny black specks are disappearing from the snowy surface and reappearing on your hand. The minute you move your hand they will almost instantly disappear. One of the best places to find the snow flea is close to any bare spot at the base of a tree that is surrounded by snow. Snow fleas are actually anthropods with a history dating back to around 400 million years ago. Their mighty hop is accomplished by two tiny tails that are folded right below their stomach area and held in place by kind of hook. When the snow flea hops, the tails are released projecting them skyward. They are usually found in large groups and have even been discovered swimming on ponds, on sheets of ice and even on icicles. Even though the snow flea prefers colder weather they are present throughout the year. They are attracted to wet surroundings where they make their home in the soil. During the warmer months they are harder to detect since they live under ground coming out only when they eat. During the late winter or in some areas early spring months snow fleas mate and the female deposits her eggs in the soil. In either case the eggs hatch during the spring months and the tiny nymphs will feed through the summer. By winter the nymphs have matured into adults.

flea bites
Of all insect or arthropod bites, flea bites are among the most common. Children may be bitten by human, cat, or dog fleas (insect family Pulicidae Fleas lay their eggs in dusty areas, rugs, and cracks between floorboards. The eggs hatch and produce larvae that then form cocoons. The cocoons lie dormant and can live for up to a year. The adult flea emerges in response to vibrations from footsteps. This accounts for the unpleasant surprize people sometimes get when they occupy a house that has stood empty for a number of months. Once hatched, adult dog fleas can live for up to two months without a blood meal. They are more likely to bite humans if they do not have a dog around to bite. The bites are grouped in lines or clusters, often on the legs or ankles. If you suspect flea bites on your children, you may not find fleas on your pet. A more reliable test is to and examine the residue for fleas, their eggs, larvae or droppings. Your veterinarian can help you with this.

Detection
Adult fleas spend almost all of their time on an animal's body. Look for tiny, white, worm-like flea larvae on the floor, in rugs, in cracks and crevices, and anywhere pets rest or sleep. They feed on dried blood excreted by adults. In order to know when to begin and end your flea-control efforts, use a specially manufactured flea comb on your pet to keep track of the flea population.

Itchy or Painful Insect Bites
What insects cause itchy or painful bites?
Bites of mosquitoes, chiggers (harvest mites), fleas, and bedbugs usually cause itchy, red bumps. The size of the swelling can vary from a dot to a centimeter (half inch). The larger size does not mean that your child is allergic to the insect bite. Mosquito bites near the eye usually cause massive swelling for 2 days. Clues that a bite is a mosquito bite are itchiness, a central raised dot in the swelling, presence of the bite on a surface not covered by clothing, summertime, and the child's being an infant (because an infant can't protect himself). Some mosquito bites in sensitive children form hard lumps that last for months. In contrast to mosquitoes, fleas and bedbugs don't fly; therefore, they crawl under clothing to nibble. Flea bites often turn into little blisters in young children. Bites of horseflies, deerflies, gnats, fire ants, harvester ants, blister beetles, and centipedes usually cause a painful, red bump. Within a few hours, fire ant bites change to blisters or pimples.

Garden Dust
Organic insecticide / fungicide dust. A specially formulated, completely organic, general purpose product designed for convenient use as a dust or spray on vegetables, fruit and flowers. Colored green to blend with foliage. Contains rotenone and cube resins for insect control and copper for disease and fungal control. Use on consumable crops up to the day before harvest. Start applying when plants leaf out in the spring before insects and diseases appear as it is easier to prevent than cure certain diseases. Try to hit as many insects as possible. Best results are obtained in early morning or evening when wind is at ebb. Avoid use during high temperatures on plants susceptible to sulphur injury, such as melons, squash, cantaloupes, and related plants. Depending on foliage density, one pound should cover approximately 1,000 square feet.
Works against aphids, leafhoppers, exposed thrips, cherry fruit flies, red-necked borers, Japanese beetles, mites and rose chafers; scab black rot, powdery mildew, fire blight, anthracnose, brown rot blossom blight, sooty blotch, leaf spot, frog eye, stem blight, shothole, peach canker, apple cedar rust and peach leaf curl on peach, sour cherry, grape, apple, pear and nectarines.
