In the air, carpet, counter or cupboard, every home shares it's resources with these tiny, often unseen invaders.
Pesticides are available for most common household insect pests, but these potent chemical compounds may be more harmful to you and the environment than the pests.
Here are some natural, non-toxic ways to control household insect pests.
Ants
The first line of defense is to remove the attractants: keep counters and food preparation areas free of crumbs and sticky spots. Cover the sugar and put the honey jar in a sealed plastic baggie. Cut off water sources such as drips or dishes left soaking overnight. If the ant invaders persist, try these simple measures:
  • Keep a small spray bottle handy, and spray the ants with a bit of soapy water. Set out cucumber peels or slices in the kitchen. Many ants have a natural aversion to cucumber.

The Battle of the Fleas
The flea is a hardy insect with a lifespan of six to 12 months. During that time, a pair of fleas could produce millions of offspring. Fleas have survived millions of years in a variety of environments. Some species can leap 15 to 36 inches high. That's equivalent to a man jumping over the 555-foot Washington Monument. All that may be admirable, but fleas on your pet or in your household aren't. Fleas can cause reactions in your pet varying from a mild skin irritation to a severe allergic reaction. Because fleas feed on blood, an extreme infestation can cause anemia or even death in animals. All cats and dogs, and other mammals, too, are susceptible to flea infestations, except for some that live in high elevations or in extremely dry environments. Whether or not you actually see fleas on your pet, they may be there. Scratching, scabs and dark specs, or "flea dirt," found on the skin can all be signs that your pet has become the unwitting host for a family of fleas. Fleas can carry tapeworms, too. If you notice small white rice-like things in your pet's feces or in the hair around his anus, your pet probably has tapeworms, which means he may also have fleas. In extreme cases, an animal may be lethargic and its lips and gums pale. To battle flea infestation requires patience and perseverance, so put on your armor and get to it! Because the life cycle of a flea is three to four weeks, it will take at least that long to completely rid your pet and its environment of the enemy. Different flea control products work in different ways, have varying levels of effectiveness and kill different flea stages (eggs, larvae and/or adults). You'll need to use a combination of products at the same time to be effective.

IGR
Insect Growth Regulators
Growth inhibitors or insect growth regulators (any of which is commonly known as an IGR) are products or materials that interrupt or inhibit the life cycle of a pest. Many people loosely use the terms "birth control for roaches" or "birth control for fleas." If an animal cannot reach adulthood, it is not capable of reproducing. By inhibiting the maturity of an insect, we keep it from reaching the critical adult stage, thus stopping the life cycle and infestation. In layman's terminology, an IGR is not an insecticide (in the bug killing definition) but is a man-made protein that only effects certain insects or groups of insects.
Flea eggs and flea larvae that are exposed to an IGR ( Nylar Precor Methoprene ) will never develop into the adult jumping, biting and (most important!) reproducing fleas. As another example, roaches that are exposed to either Nylar or Hydroprene cannot shed their exoskeleton or develop a new exoskeleton. This is an important part of the roach life cycle: if they cannot shed their outer shell or grow a new one, they cannot mature any further.

Fleas are small, wingless insects that feed on the blood of animals and people. Americans spend about $9 billion a year controlling fleas - one of the biggest expenses for pet owners. In Texas, most flea problems are caused by the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis. This flea feeds on cats, dogs and wildlife. Other kinds of fleas, such as the dog flea, human flea, and rat flea, are less common on pets and in homes. Fortunately, fleas need not be a serious problem because there are many effective treatments. Identifying the problem Adult cat fleas are about 1/8 inch long (1 to 3 mm). They are brownish-black, flattened looking, and without wings. Backward-pointing bristles help fleas move through the hairs or feathers of host animals and make them more difficult to remove by grooming. The six legs, especially the hind pair, are long and adapted for jumping. Flea larvae are less than 1/4 inch long (6 mm), legless, and dirty white in color. The most likely place to find larvae is in infested pet bedding.

Fleas seem to get a 'bad press', which is hardly surprising as they are unwanted 'guests' on our pets or in our houses. They are or have been the vectors of a number of serious diseases including Bubonic Plague, i.e. the Black Death of the Middle Ages which killed one quarter of the population of Europe. However, they are amazing insects and as we like to celebrate the wonders of the miniature world 'warts and all' here on Micscape, this month we take a closer look at these fascinating critters. Fleas are parasites, feeding directly on humans or other warm blooded animals. Usually you or your pet serve as these hosts.
A flea can jump 7 to 8 inches vertically and 14 to 16 inches horizontally.
A skin reaction to a flea bite appears as a slightly raised and red itchy spot.
Sometimes these sores bleed. Fleas usually require warm and humid conditions to develop.
Due to the flea cycle and weather conditions, many people don't realize they have
a flea problem until they return home from vacation or after a move to new premises
and are confronted by hungry fleas. There are several types of fleas, but the most common is the cat flea, even on dogs.

Cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) are frequently encountered in homes and are common pests on domestic cats and dogs. Dog fleas (Ctenocephalides canis) look like cat fleas, but are rare in California. Sticktight fleas (Echidnophaga gallinacea) can become a problem when pets frequent areas near poultry. Female sticktight fleas firmly attach themselves around the ears and eyes of their host. Fleas on either cats or dogs in California are most likely cat fleas.
    IDENTIFICATION
Adult fleas are very small insects (up to 1/8 inch), so it is difficult to see a number of the characteristics used to describe them. These reddish brown to black, wingless insects are compressed from side to side so that they look like they are walking "on edge." They have piercing-sucking mouthparts through which they obtain blood meals from their hosts. Flea

    Fleas
Fleas are small, wingless insects that feed on the blood of animals and people. Americans spend about $9 billion a year controlling fleas, which makes flea control one of the biggest expenses for pet owners. In Arizona, most flea problems are caused by the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis . This flea feeds on cats, dogs and wildlife. Cat fleas do not normally live on humans, but do bite people who handle infested animals. Flea bites cause small, red, itchy bumps, usually on the ankles and lower legs of humans. An integrated flea control program includes good sanitation and treatment of the pet and environment. You can eliminate fleas from your home with proper treatment, but it may take time, especially if the infestation is heavy.
    Sanitation
Change pet bedding regularly and vacuum thoroughly. Vacuuming removes up to 30 percent of the larvae and up to 60 percent of flea eggs from a carpet, as well as the larvae's food supply of dried blood. Vacuum under furniture, cushions, chairs, beds, and along walls. Discard vacuum cleaner bags at least once a week. Fleas can continue to develop inside vacuum cleaner bags and re-infest the house.
    Treating Pets
Your pet's first line of defense against fleas is a flea comb and a good bath. Soap acts as a gentle insecticide and helps control light infestations on your pet. Though time consuming, combing helps reduce the need for insecticides. Flea combs have fine teeth that remove adult fleas from fur. Most dogs and cats seem to enjoy this treatment; pay special attention to the face and neck, and the area in front of the tail. Dip the comb frequently in soapy water to kill fleas removed from the pet.

    33. Do It Yourself: Other
Ask your veterinarian about new products such as insectgrowth regulators, which interrupt the growth cycle of fleas so larvae won t turn into adults.

Insects and other pests can be a real hassle during the warmer months. Here are a few tips to help you minimize the intrusion from these unwanted visitors. A caulk gun ( figure A ) is very helpful in keeping pests out of the house. Caulk around as many openings as possible. Pay particular attention to door frames, foundations and windows. Keep all dry goods in airtight containers. Clean spills promptly. Residue from sweet drinks can attract ants. Wash your dishes regularly, and empty your garbage frequently to keep food waste from attracting flies and ants. New houseplants sometimes harbor insects. Keep new plants isolated from your other plants. Coping With Fleas Fleas can be a real problem in spring and summer. When the temperature and humidity begin to rise, adult fleas begin to emerge. To deal with flea problems, start with your pets. Use a gentle flea-control shampoo and work the suds well into the animal's fur. Then rinse well. Never use shampoo designed for humans on your pets. It can irritate their skin. Insecticidal soaps such as those containing citrus oils can be very effective in helping to control flea problems.

    Identification
Adult Cat Flea Larva and Egg
    Life Cycle and Habits
Larvae are blind, avoid light, pass through three larval instars and take a week to several months to develop. Their food consists of digested blood from adult flea feces, dead skin, hair, feathers, and other organic debris. (Larvae do not suck blood.) Pupa mature to adulthood within a silken cocoon woven by the larva to which pet hair, carpet fiber, dust, grass cuttings, and other debris adheres. In about five to fourteen days, adult fleas emerge or may remain resting in the cocoon until the detection of vibration (pet and people movement), pressure (host animal lying down on them), heat, noise, or carbon dioxide (meaning a potential blood source is near). Most fleas overwinter in the larval or pupal stage with survival and growth best during warm, moist winters and spring. Adult fleas cannot survive or lay eggs without a blood meal, but may live from two months to one year without feeding. There is often a desperate need for flea control after a family has returned from a long vacation. The house has been empty with no cat or dog around for fleas to feed on. When the family and pets are gone, flea eggs hatch and larvae pupate. The adult fleas fully developed inside the pupal cocoon remains in a kind of "limbo" for a long time until a blood source is near. The family returning from vacation is immediately attacked by waiting hungry hordes of fleas. (In just 30 days, 10 female fleas under ideal conditions can multiply to over a quarter million different life stages.)

This module is intended to serve as a source of basic information needed to implement an integrated pest management program for fleas. Any pest management plan or activity must be formulated within the framework of the management zones where it will be implemented. Full consideration must be given to threatened and endangered species, natural and cultural resources, human health and safety, and the legal mandates of the individual parks. Recommendations in this module must be evaluated and applied in relation to these broader considerations.
Although there are over 250 species of fleas described in North America (Pratt 1957), only a few are commonly encountered by humans with enough frequency to be considered pests (Ehman and Story 1982). Flea Control Introduction: Fleas are external, blood-sucking parasites of dogs (and other canids ), cats (and other felids ), pigs, rodents, rabbits, people, birds. Ctenocephalides species infest dogs and cats, naturally, but can also jump on and bite other animals and people. Adult fleas bite the host animal, sucking blood and sometimes, transmitting diseases and/or other parasites (e.g. plague, cat scratch fever, peliosis (both from Bartonella henselae ), human and cat/dog tapeworms, other worms, blood parasites ( Hemobartonella felis ). Bites are painful, cause local itching, produce intense discomfort and at times secondary infection (due to excessive self trauma from scratching) , especially in animals particularly sensitive (allergic) to flea saliva. Additionally, infestation of very young, small animals can result in severe anemia (from blood sucking)...and even death. The cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis , is believed to transmit the blood pathogen, Hemobartonella to cats.
