world tour For the first time Spanish flamenco and Argentine tango, two of the most captivating dance forms in the world are brought together in a dramatic and passionate display. There is a natural if tenuous connection between flamenco and tango, since both are a way of life borne out of folklore and oppression. True tango is moody, mournful and improvised to bandoneon music that sobs to a halt, only to sweep you away again in sensual embrace. Flamenco , however, can just explode with the whole range of human emotion. Sometimes sad sometimes happy, it is a dance style that is by nature oriental. Drawing on the overlapping themes of both tango and flamenco, this dynamic company of dancers and musicans present an exhilarating show.

http://www.red2000.com/spain/flamenco/
FLAMENCO Flamenco is a genuine Spanish art, and to be more exact an genuine Southern Spanish art. It exists in three forms: Cante , the song, Baile , the dance, and Guitarra , guitar playing.
Gypsies are very often named as its fathers , and at least it can be taken for certain that they played an important part in its creation. But also the popular songs and dances of Andalusia have influenced early Flamenco considerably.
Certainly there were other influences, too, as it will not surprise in a country that has been dominated by most diverse cultures and civilizations during its different historical epochs. There were the legendary Tartessos , and seven centuries of Muslim occupation hardly could have passed without leaving traces. All that, directly or indirectly, influenced Flamenco.
The first time Flamenco is reported on in literature is in the "Cartas Marruecas" of Cadalso , in 1774. Its cradle most probably was where, between 1765 and 1860, the first Flamenco-schools were created: Cádiz, Jerez de la Frontera and Triana (Seville).
In this epoch Flamenco dance started to have its firm position in the ballrooms. Early Flamenco seems to have been purely vocal, accompanied only by rhythmical clapping of hands

Flamenco combines acoustic guitar playing, singing, chanting, dancing and staccato handclapping. The flamenco dancer performs with passion, fervor, even tortured expressions but always striving for grace and dignity.
Flamenco handclapping produces a sharp, almost piercing sound. Those performers not dancing or guitar playing hold the left arm still. Its bent at the elbow with the hand about neck high and just slightly cupped. The fingers of the right hand slap the left crosswise, covering the hollow.
The dancer does not begin immediately, but waits, absorbing the strumming, clapping and singing until inspired to dance.

The Pyrenees Mountains running along the Spanish-French border have throughout history cut Spain off from the mainstream of European culture.
But a Mediterranean coast hundreds of miles long opened the country to influences from cultures not only bordering this sea but beyond it as well.

Spanish Gypsy and Flamenco Dance History
by Hadia Any discussion of Spanish Gypsies would be remiss without a consideration of Flamenco, which lies at the very soul of these often misunderstood and misrepresented people. In the past few years, there has been an ever increasing interest is all things "gypsy" and what is termed "Spanish-Arabic" in the Middle Eastern Dance community. I am very happy to see this interest and believe that creative fusion of art forms can lead the way to artistic evolution.
Flamenco
Although there are many theories promising to explain the meaning of the word flamenco, most lack enough evidence to substantiate them. One commonly accepted version translates flamenco as Spanish for the Flemish soldiers of the Spanish-Belgian Territories. These soldiers were renowned for their self-confidence, style and ostentatious pride, all qualities that reflect the gypsy character. In fact, the term "flamenco" came to be synonymous with "gitano" (gypsy) in Spanish Romany Argot.
History
Between 800 and 900 A.D., a large exodus of people occurred from the Punjabi region of India. These people are believed to be members of the Untouchables, a group within the Indian caste system comprised of animal traders and trainers, acrobats, dancers, musicians, palmists and metalworkers. These nomadic groups, generally referred to as Roman and/or gypsies, divided into two major migratory routes, the most traceable moving west across Asia and the European continent, including Spain. The first recorded account of Spanish Gitanos "Beticos" dates from 1447 in Barcelona.

http://www.nagwa.com/flamenco.html
Flamenco Dance Most of the roots of Flamenco can be traced to the rich blend of liturgical and secular music from the East which met the gypsies when they came to the Andalusian region in southern Spain in the 15th century. Andalusia was the breeding ground for the continued development and mixing of Spanish folk music and for the Flamenco song.
In the 10th century, about a million people lived in the city of Cordoba - an incredible blend of races and nationalities, of folk groups with different life styles, languages and cultures. Jews, Arabs, Berbers and Moors lived separately in their ghettos or districts; others, with a higher material standard, lived in palaces. Integration between the immigrants and the native population was, however, unavoidable, and since that time the Andalusian people have been an indistinguishable union of these races. During the following centuries, music and dance developed from this union.

By Anne-Marie Dingemans, A Dutch based in Spain. She is the Director of AmeriSpan’s Europe office (specializing in language and volunteer programs abroad)
When I went to Granada for the first time, I of course went to see a Flamenco show, as does every tourist. I did enjoy it, but to be honest, it was because I laughed through the majority of the performance! To me, the singer sounded like he was having a nervous breakdown over some drama (my Spanish was not good enough to understand what he was singing), and the dancers had such stern faces and coupled with their vigorous stomping and clapping they made me giggle. Or did I giggle because their passionate display of emotion embarrassed me a little? It wasn’t until I came to live in Spain that I started to actually appreciate Flamenco more and more. To my surprise, I came to learn that there are many forms of Flamenco. For example, the Seguiriyas are a very serious form, talking about pent up hatred of persecution and often themes of death. On the other hand, there are the more light-hearted Sevillanas. These are two of many types of Flamenco music and dance, each having their own artists and peñas (Flamenco clubs).
