42. Flamenco Dance And Music Take Center Stage At Stanford (7/97)
Members of the Stanford community can try their hands (and feet) at authentic flamenco dancing when Flamenco Week comes to Roble Gym July 2125.
http://www.stanford.edu/dept/news/pr/97/970716flamenco.html
Flamenco dance and music take center stage at Stanford
Students ages 12 to 80 and from all over the state have signed up for Flamenco Week's 10-class workshop in Roble. Those who can't make it during the day can take evening walk-in classes Monday through Thursday of that week. "This is an opportunity for them to come in and have an intensive week with first-class international teachers," Harris says of the daytime sessions. He adds that with approximately 20 flamenco teachers, the Bay Area is rich with offerings. The workshop is aimed at people who live outside the Bay Area's population centers and don't have access to these teachers. Unlike the more theatrical versions of the dance form, which have been popularized by performers like Greco, the version of flamenco that will be spotlighted at Stanford is closer to the style performed in southern Spain. "Jose Greco is of the theater form of flamenco, which is, of course, for financial reasons, where you have to be if you're going to make money," Harris says. "But the traditional venue for flamenco is in the cafes and bars of small towns and large towns of Andalusia. It's also very much a family art." The three components of flamenco are "baile," or dance; "toque," instrumentals; and "cante," song. Although flamenco has its roots in southern Spain, it has taken on rhythms, melodies and chants of other cultures, including Indian, African and Jewish. Traditional dances from northern Spain, Cuba, Argentina and Colombia have also been incorporated into the art form. Although many contemporary flamenco performers are not gypsies, flamenco remains largely a gypsy tradition. "Since it's an art that is not documented and keeps changing all the time, you don't really know what it was even 100 years ago," Harris says. Some of today's flamenco performers have fused traditional moves and music with modern dance and jazz.

Spain culture Send a Flamenco postcard Flamenco is a genuine Spanish art, or to be more exact a genuine Southern Spanish art. It exists in three forms: el cante, the song, el baile, the dance, and la guitarra, guitar-playing. Gypsies are very often cited as its originators, and it is at least certain that they played an important part in its creation. But the popular songs and dances of Andalusia also had a major influence on early Flamenco. There were the legendary Tartessos, and seven centuries of Muslim occupation hardly could have passed without leaving traces. All that, directly or indirectly, influenced flamenco. The first time Flamenco is reported on in literature is in the "Cartas Marruecas" of Cadalso, in 1774. Cante Jondo Guitar players featuring the dancers increasingly gained a reputation. From 1910 to 1955 flamenco singing was marked by the ópera flamenca, with an easier kind of music such as fandangos and cantes de ida y vuelta-the latter clearly showing South American influences. From 1915 onwards flamenco shows were organized and performed all over the world. Anyhow, not everybody was happy with that development and in 1922 intellectuals such as Manuel de Falla organized a contest in Granada to promote "authentic" cante jondo.

FLAMENCO DANCE MANUEL MERIDA. From a professional point of view flamenco dance would become consolidated in the parties organized by the schools of dance of Seville, as well as in some typical places such as the Granada caves of Sacromonte. By the 191O's, flamenco becomes more and more present in the theater Performances by Pastora Imperio, "La Argentina", La "Argentinita", "La Nina de los Peines", "El Mochuelo", who offer their art in programs of other genres or at the end of movie programs or comedy plays. In the period of flamenco opera, the singing, the dance and the guitar inlay in comedies with a local or even flamenco essence. It is also in that period when "La Argentina" creates her company with Antonio "el de Bilbao" and with Faico, touring all over America, and making their debut in the New York Maxime Elliot's Theater in 1916, where they present the Enrique Granados' choreography of Goyescas. In 1915 Manuel de Falla composes for Pastora Imperio "El Amor Brujo" with a libreto by Gregorio Martinez Sierra. This work is the starting point of flamenco ballet, although the first company of Spanish Dance is created by La Argentina in 1929. Six years later, La Argentina puts together the first entirely flamenco ballet, with her version of "El Amor Brujo". Antonia Mercé was accompanied by Vicente Escudero, Pastora Imperio and Miguel Molina as the most outstanding artists of her show.

Juana was born in Badajoz, Extremadura Spain. She had her first taste of flamenco as a young girl when the Marques de Porrina, (a famous Spanish singer) visited her parents' house She studied literature in the university of Seville but was soon distracted by her passion for flamenco. She gave up her books for her dancing shoes, and here she met Manolo Marin who introduced her to her true vocation. When she was 21 years old she emigrated to Paris. She set up a flamenco ballet with Lita Peiro and created "Don Juan". At the same time she branched into dancing " jota" and fandango in Francis López's operas at the "Theatre du Chatelet" In the next ten years, there were few flamenco shows in Paris in which she did not perform. She performed regularly at the "Casa Pepe", the most famous "rumbero" restaurant in the latin quarter. In 1988 she returned to Spain and settled in the Albayzin in Granada.
