Flamenco Dancing
Flamenco is the traditional song and dance of the Gypsies (flamencos) of Andalusia. Its history can be traced over several centuries from Gypsy, Moorish, Andalucian, and other roots. Its evolution is a source of great debate with no accepted explanation of how flamenco resulted from the cultural influences of such diverse regions as North Africa, Southern Europe and the Near and Far East. Flamenco has never been more popular in Spain and abroad than it is today with a new generation of new flamenco performers in the post-Franco era who have broadened flamenco's appeal to an international audience. Flamenco combines acoustic guitar playing, singing, chanting, dancing and staccato handclapping. The flamenco dancer performs with passion, fervor, even tortured expressions but always striving for grace and dignity.
Flamenco handclapping produces a sharp, almost piercing sound. Those performers not dancing or guitar playing hold the left arm still. Its bent at the elbow with the hand about neck high and just slightly cupped. The fingers of the right hand slap the left crosswise, covering the hollow.
The dancer does not begin immediately, but waits, absorbing the strumming, clapping and singing until inspired to dance.

Flamenco:
Antonio Marquez and Company By Patricia Boccadoro
PARIS, 30 April 2001
All the colours, riches and culture of Spain were concentrated on the small, intimate stage of theAmphitheatre of the Opera Bastille transformed for all too short a time into an Andalusian tavern, with an Antonio Marquez, feet stamping as if possessed , smouldering then exploding onto the floor space.
Born with the fire inside that distinguishes genius from the merely commendable, Marquez, star dancer of the National Ballet of Spain before he founded his own company in 1995, imparts rapture and gaiety to his audience. More exuberant, more of a showman than Gades or the legendary Antonio, Antonio Marquez is nonetheless a pure Flamenco dancer in the great traditional style, following the fixed rules, but mesmerising his audience by the sheer force of his personality.
Possibly the most charismatic dancer since Rudolf Nureyev, he had just the right touch of arrogance as he led his young troupe , the average age not above twenty-two or three, chosen as much for their temperament and, presumably, beauty through an excellent programme of three pieces.

Flamenco is a typical dance and music in the south of Spain, concretely in the Andalusian region. It was brought to Spain by gypsy people coming from Eastern Europe in the 15th century. The roots of Flamenco come from different cultures and countries such as Morocco, Egypt, and India; but the first traces of flamenco in Spain date to 1760. Among the Spanish cities with more tradition in Flamenco are Cadiz, Granada, and Sevilla.
