Open Water Fishing Regulations WHY DO WE REGULATE? Fisheries management is the science of balancing the impacts of habitat changes, fishing pressure for different kinds of fish, the desires of different anglers for the kind, numbers, and size of fish they would like to catch, and the biological potential of the waters to grow and support the kinds, size, and numbers of fish that anglers want to catch. Maine has nearly 6,000 lakes and ponds over one acre in size and almost 32,000 miles of rivers and streams. These waters differ remarkably in basic physical features, water chemistry, and biological potential. The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's goal is to provide anglers with the most opportunities for the types of fishing they want, while ensuring that these same fish resources are going to be here for our children. To accomplish this on all of Maine's waters is a challenge! While we can help enhance some fisheries by stocking or improving habitat, one of the most important tools that we have for fisheries conservation is controlling angler impacts on fish populations. Regulations are designed to conserve fish populations and help provide the kind of fishing experience that anglers want. This can be complicated and since many of Maine's waters are different, the same regulation on different waters may not have the same result and can affect anglers and fish populations very differently.

... Links Welcome to Maine! Come and enjoy some of the best fishing in the eastern United States. The 3000 lakes and ponds, coupled with 32,000 miles of streams and rivers winding through expansive forests are a national treasure. Whether you seek a native, wild salmon, trout or bass in a remote, wilderness environment, or just want to go out for an afternoon of fun, Maine has it all! The Department has developed regulations to protect fisheries and to provide you with a diversity of fishing opportunities now and in the future. In setting these regulations we consider your wishes and the welfare of our fisheries, as well as the unique ability of each of our inland waters to produce different numbers and sizes of fish. Whether you are a seasoned angler or a beginner, I urge you to become familiar with the general fishing laws of Maine as well as any special regulations which may be in place for the water you plan to fish. When you reach your favorite fishing spot, please respect private property and practice good sportsmanship and ethical behavior as you enjoy the opportunities afforded to you as a Maine license holder. COLORADO HERPETOFAUNAL ATLAS TO LAUNCH The Division of Wildlife is launching a Web-based atlas that biologists hope will spark statewide interest in native amphibians and reptiles, including the endangered, high-altitude boreal toad.
The interactive Colorado Herpetofaunal Atlas will feature scientific and historical data on the state’s frogs, toads, salamanders, lizards, turtles and snakes. As part of efforts to draw attention to the online atlas and companion database, a group of experts will conduct a series of public field sessions around the state from June 7-15 . For more information, see the news release
Colorado joins several other states and Canadian provinces that have introduced similar educational-scientific initiatives. DOW biologists hope the atlas becomes a virtual classroom for students, researchers and amateur herpetologists who spot “herps” in their backyards or in the backcountry.
Visitors to the new Web atlas will be able to read about the history, distribution and abundance of Colorado’s herpetofaunal species, view or submit digital photos, listen to digital audio WAVE files, and call up state maps indicating where amphibians and reptiles can be found . At launch time, the new atlas will include 25,000 pieces of historical data dating back to the late 1880s.
