Recreational Use
The Waikato Region’s coasts provide great recreational opportunities and are popular with holidaymakers. We need to make sure that our recreational activities don’t affect the coast’s natural character. Recreational use of the coast can put pressure on natural character . For example, the outstanding natural and amenity values of the Coromandel Peninsula’s coast have encouraged the rapid growth of coastal settlements (largely holiday homes) and associated structures over the last 50 years. It's estimated that the Coromandel Peninsula receives close to a million visitors per year. Holiday makers greatly swell the resident population during the peak summer period from Christmas Day to New Year’s Day. Our recreational activities affect our coastal environment. These effects are increasing due to:

People use braided rivers for fishing, camping, boating, kayaking, wildlife watching, and so on. The tourism industry in the Upper Waitaki Basin includes activities like fishing tours, home-stays, and eco-tourism. However, braided river birds are very vulnerable to disturbance by humans and their activities. For example, if riverbed birds are disturbed from their nests, eggs and chicks can be cooked by high temperatures or chilled in low temperatures, they can be run over, or be eaten by pet dogs and cats. Recreational users can minimise the risk to nesting birds by driving on marked tracks, learning about bird behaviours, responding appropriately to bird behaviour, keeping pets off riverbeds or dogs on a leash.

Introduction

Activities
Top Picks Hiking In Depth Recreational Activities Index Ratings View Rating Submit Rating GORP Arizona PARKS Lake Mead National Recreation Area - Activities Boating Although Lake Mead and Lake Mohave are the prime attractions for visitors, both lakes often appear as empty as the desert. Sailboats, fishing boats, ski boats and houseboats all share the lakes' 290 square miles without crowding one another. On these spacious open waters opportunities for sight-seeing and other boating activities are varied. Boaters will find that they can see and reach many scenic areas that are inaccessible to those traveling by car. For example, boats can easily travel up the narrow, steep-walled gorge of Iceberg Canyon in Lake Mead or up the equally spectacular Black Canyon in Lake Mohave, which retains much of the character of the Colorado. Boaters can also investigate the numerous secluded coves formed by fingers of the desert jutting out into the water. Many of these coves are bordered by sandy beaches where you can picnic or camp. The beaches are particularly popular camping spots during the hotter months. For those who want hours of uninterrupted waterskiing, the lakes' wide basins are perfect, especially when winds are light. Sailboarders will prefer near-shore areas and stronger breezes.

http://www.blueridgemountains.com/outdoor_adventure.html
Outdoor Adventure
in Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains Two of the greatest outdoor adventures in the world begin at the southern border of Fannin County. Both the Appalachian and the Benton MacKaye Trail start at the top of Springer Mountain. The Appalachian Trail, better known and longer of the trails, begins a 2,000+ mile journey to Maine through many of the states on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. The Benton MacKaye, more remote than the Appalachian, begins a 250 mile trek along the western slopes of the Appalachian Mountains, rejoining the AT in Virginia. Hike the Benton MacKaye north and in 13 miles it crosses the pristine Toccoa River on a structure known simply as the " Swinging Bridge ." It is the longest suspension bridge east of the Mississippi and was built by the Forest Service and the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club in the mid-1970's. The Benton MacKaye continues through some very remote areas of Georgia, entirely in Fannin County for this portion of the journey. On any given weekend the Toccoa River is a popular destination for tubing, canoeing, kayaking and trout fishing. Beginning at Deep Hole, a
