EMBARGOED TO 11:00AM, WEDNESDAY, 14 AUG 2002
FISHERIES DEVELOPMENT FUND PROPOSED BY COMMISSION
Research into and restoration of freshwater fisheries will be able to be supported from the Fisheries Development Fund, one of the proposals for allocation released by the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission today. He said that concerns by some parties over whether the Commission has adequately provided for the loss of Commercial Freshwater Fisheries should be allayed through these proposals. Mr Hapi said the $10 million fund would be established with the agreement of Iwi. It will be a contestable fund to advance generic research on impacts of land-use change, the introduction of foreign organisms on indigenous fisheries, as well as particular aspects that could serve as a pilot for restoration efforts across the country. The allocation proposals released today also include allocation of freshwater fisheries quota to Iwi living within a quota management area and the formation of a freshwater fisheries working group to work with Iwi and hapu involved in initiatives on freshwater fisheries. Historic Global Fisheries Agreement Enters into Force
A global treaty to address over fishing on the high seas enters into force today, opening a new era in international fishery management. The U.S. is among thirty nations to ratify this binding United Nations agreement, which sets new, compulsory standards for managing highly migratory and shared fishery resources. Malta deposited its instrument of ratification one month ago, and as the thirtieth country to do so, brought the treaty into force today. Provisions of the treaty greatly enhance conservation and management efforts by ensuring that the standards for determining when such measures are necessary are strengthened in favor of effective resource conservation. Parties will also cooperate in the collection and exchange of fishery data and give enforcement agents increased authority to board and inspect fishing vessels on the high seas to ensure compliance with conservation measures. The agreement also obligates member nations to settle disputes peaceably. Another important aspect of the agreement is the affirmative commitment of parties to cooperate in regional fisheries management organizations. The United States has proactively implemented this aspect of the agreement since our ratification in 1996. The U.S. played a leadership role in negotiations to establish management organizations in several previously unmanaged fisheries, notably including the successful conclusion of agreements to manage fisheries in the central and Western Pacific and Southeast Atlantic Oceans.

    09-94 Science Helps Sustain Great
    Lakes Fisheries
Nearly destroyed by overexploitation, invasions of nonindigenous species and pollution in the first half of this century, the fisheries of the Great Lakes have undergone a remarkable rebirth. Today, the Great Lakes support world-class recreational fisheries that generate more than $4 billion in regional economic activity. Commercial fisheries generate another $270 million. Through coordinated research and direct interaction with state and federal management agencies over the past 25 years, the region's Sea Grant programs have contributed significantly toward sustained development of these fisheries. Thanks to the scientific data, techniques and new management tools provided by Sea Grant-funded research, Great Lakes fishery policies now are determined more by the lakes' biological capacity than by political and short-term economic pressures. As a microcosm of the global ocean, the Great Lakes offer a natural laboratory for developing and implementing science-based fisheries management and a model for improving the management of the nation's overexploited ocean fish stocks.
    Lake Ontario Example
Like the other Great Lakes, the Lake Ontario sport fishery, valued at $100 million a year, is sustained largely by the stocking of Pacific salmon, which feed on unstable populations of forage fish that also consist mostly of nonindigenous species.

Experts to Examine Status of Perch Fisheries Worldwide
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    July 21, 2003
MADISON, Wis. — Experts from almost 30 countries will gather here July 20-24 to discuss the status of two of the most important fish in the Great Lakes. Percis III, the Third International Percid Fish Symposium, is a forum for sharing knowledge about the biology, management and aquaculture of percid fish, which include valuable food and sport fish such as yellow perch and walleye. The goals of the meeting are to enhance international collaboration and foster the exchange of ideas among researchers, and to help scientists in the United States and abroad identify priority areas for future research on the fish. “We want to continue a dialogue among the leading experts in the field that will catalyze management of the world’s fisheries,” said conference organizer Jeffrey Malison, director of the UW-Madison Aquaculture Program. Percis III will feature poster sessions and seminars on the status of Lake Michigan’s yellow perch fishery, management options, and the aquaculture potential of the popular food fish. Drastic reductions in the yellow perch population in Lake Michigan have demonstrated the need for more information and improved management of the fishery. Recent research has addressed life-history dynamics, overfishing, predator-prey relationships, and the impact of such environmental stressors as global climate change on the yellow perch and the European perch, perca fluviatilis. But organizers say there is still more to be learned.

Hagen must be replaced as fisheries minister
For immediate release January 29, 2003 VICTORIA - Premier Gordon Campbell showed extremely poor judgement by appointing Stan Hagen, minister of sustainable resource management, as fisheries minister after John van Dongen was forced to resign because of a police investigation into his handling of an aquaculture file, environmentalists and First Nations said today. "Minister Hagen must resign immediately because the largest single campaign donation he received in the May 2001 election was from the Omega Salmon Group," said Chris Genovali of Raincoast Conservation Society. "Mr. Hagen also received funds from Heritage Aquaculture and Akua Feed Systems Inc. so he shouldn't replace Mr. van Dongen when there are other ministers who do not have this type of conflict." Joyce Murray, minister of water, land and air protection, did not receive campaign contributions from aquaculture companies and could handle the fisheries file since her ministry is already responsible for waste management issues concerning fish farms.
