Welcome to the Alaska Maritime Training Center Alaska’s coastline and extended economic zone are the greatest of any of the United States. Alaska's maritime operating environment is one of the most challenging in the world. Safely transporting passengers and freight or carrying out commercial fishing operations in Alaskan waters requires well-qualified captains and crews. The goal of the Alaska Maritime Training Center is to promote safe and profitable marine operations by effectively preparing captains and crewmembers for employment in the Alaskan maritime industry. Courses offered at the Alaska Maritime Training Center fall into three basic groups: USCG-approved courses, marine safety training courses, and emergency medical services courses. In addition to the standard classes listed below, customized training and research are available to meet the specific needs of individual mariners and maritime companies. Most of AVTEC's maritime license and certificate programs are U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) approved. Many meet the STCW criteria of the International Maritime Organization. These courses have received approval from the USCG Commandant and may be required for certain licenses or certificates. AVTEC is approved for USCG third party testing and licensing classes now include operational time on the water. Completion of some classes count toward sea service for a license.
