Introduction
Photo: Aerial view of the SFOS Juneau Center. The University of Alaska Fairbanks offers degree programs on the Fairbanks campus and at the Juneau Center, through the Fisheries Division of the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. Freshwater fisheries and habitat ecology are emphasized at Fairbanks, and marine fisheries and aquaculture at Juneau. Students can take classes at one or both campuses as part of their degree program. Both undergraduate (B.S.) and graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) degrees are offered. The undergraduate degree program is offered only at the Fairbanks campus, but courses also can be taken at the Juneau Center. The program provides a broad education, qualifying graduates to enter fisheries management, law enforcement, and public education. The undergraduate fisheries program provides a firm foundation for graduate studies in fisheries science.

In addition, the Department is responsible for the establishment and enforcement of rules and regulations governing fishing, hunting, and trapping, propagation and stocking of fish, acquisition of wildlife management areas, the registration of snowmobiles, watercraft, and all terrain vehicles, safety programs for hunters, snowmobiles, and watercraft, and the issuing of licenses (hunting, fishing, trapping, guide, etc.) and permits.

The Program
The overall goal of the Fisheries Biology Program is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and motivation required to ensure the conservation of fish and aquatic resources that are faced with increasing societal demands and increasing loss of habitat. We stress development of a field-based understanding of the relationships between freshwater and marine fishes and the habitats upon which they depend, but our program is broad enough to provide specialized training in fish population dynamics and fishery management, restoration ecology, systematics, marine and freshwater aquaculture, fish health management, water pollution biology and wastewater utilization, and aquarium sciences. Each of these areas has its own important role to play in the overall conservation of fish resources. Fisheries Biology students have on-campus facilities for hands-on studies: a recirculating freshwater fish hatchery, rearing ponds, spawning pens, an artificial stream, and modern laboratories for study of fish genetics, pathology, taxonomy, ecology, and age and growth. Also on campus is the California Cooperative Fishery Research Unit, supported by both state and federal government, and a large fish museum collection.

Fisheries Science
Fisheries Science is multidisciplinary, drawing expertise from the biological, physical, and social sciences. Fisheries scientists study populations and communities of aquatic resources, their responses to exploitation, and changes in environmental conditions, and their management. Research is quantitative and may be either basic or applied. A diversity of faculty talent exists within the University System of Maryland to provide graduate students with a strong education in ecology, biology, and management of fish and invertebrate resources.
The multidisciplinary nature of fisheries science requires broad training in areas that may include ecology, oceanography, aquaculture, economics, mathematics, seafood technology, pathology and diseases, and management science. Students will select a curriculum, with assistance from their Research Advisory committees, to best achieve their academic and professional goals. The faculty recognizes that flexible, yet rigorous, curriculum choices are important for students in fisheries science.
The program in fisheries offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Graduates at either level may expect to find challenging career opportunities. Most career opportunities in fisheries science are in the government and academic sectors, although in recent years private businesses, research firms and aquaculture businesses offer increasingly diverse career choices.

These qualifications are recognised by many employers and entitle their holder to professional status within the Institute. The booklets used in the Certificate and Diploma Courses are also available for purchase separately. Details of titles and prices can be found here.
Certificate Course
The certificate in Fisheries Management provides knowledge to the level required by persons aspiring to employment as a supervisory water bailiff or fisheries inspector in the water industry, or similar positions in commercially run fisheries. It also provides a sound knowledge base for persons interested in running their own fisheries. The course is organised on a modular basis, with a core module covering freshwater biology, water quality and fish propagation, and the second module including fishery law, bailiffing and keepering duties, fishery maintenance and improvement, and fishing methods. The Fish Farming Certificate shares the core module with the Fisheries Management Certificate, but has a second module covering fish farming topics in greater depth. It is aimed principally at people working as fish farm assistants who wish to improve their knowledge and skills with a view to further career progression.

General Information
Fisheries and wildlife students take courses in the natural sciences and in management to help maintain and manipulate our land, water, and animal and plant resources for the best ecological, commercial, recreational, and scientific uses. What the Major is Like Fisheries and wildlife majors study the environmental requirements of fish or wildlife species, populations, and communities. They also study sound practices to manipulate the environment and learn to regulate human activity by controlling animal harvest, pollution, and the recreational use of specific areas. Students also learn principles of conservation as well, focusing on sound efforts to maintain and manipulate natural resources. About 35 to 40 percent of a fisheries and wildlife major's course work consists of general education courses in communications, quantitative sciences (calculus, computer studies, and statistics), social sciences, and humanities. These courses generally are taken during the freshman and sophomore years.
