Graduate Program
General Information
The new Fisheries Centre at UBC was formed as a unit of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and aims to focus and promote the multidisciplinary study of fisheries. Analytical tools developed in a broad spectrum of parent subjects, including biology, oceanography, economics, engineering, mathematics, sociology, planning and policy are employed in order to assess, appraise and forecast the impacts of both human and natural processes on fishery resources. Fisheries policy and management problems under study include assessment and management of artisanal and commercial food capture fisheries, recreational fisheries, coastal and watershed management, aquaculture biology and engineering, conflict resolution and the co-management of shared fishery resources, and the conservation of endangered exploited species in both marine and freshwater environments. This guideline is to complement the general regulations detailed by the Faculty of Graduate Studies . Students of the Fisheries Centre can be enrolled at various departments under the Faculty of Graduate Studies, e.g.

Set course: Fisheries

When the oil tanker Prestige sunk off the Galician coast, teams of experts were called in to assess the devastation. Among them were specialists who understood how to assess the economic consequences of the damage to local fisheries, as well as those who could help with the massive clean-up operation. Marine resource damage assessment, as it is known, is one of the key skills students develop on the Portsmouth University MSc/PgD in Fisheries Planning and Development. The economic cost of pollution to fisheries is an ongoing area of research in the university's Centre for the Economics and Management of Aquatic Resources (CEMARE).

    Ecology
March, 1998 by Jimmy D. Winter
The authors and publishers made tradeoffs to make this a reasonably priced text. There is much information in the book for the price. On the other hand, one could argue that it is expensive for a paperback. Although there is an enormous number of photographs, their quality is equivalent to that of a good photocopy. The figures are well constructed; however, the figures and the printing in the text are gray. The authors have succeeded in writing a well-integrated wildlife and fisheries textbook. I recommend it for a lower division integrated course for majors. Although the book contains much technical material, it could be suitable for nonscience majors because of the clear writing. Because of the breadth of the book, it can also be useful in more advanced courses as a supplemental text. JIMMY D. WINTER

    INTRODUCTION
Kagoshima Prefectural Kagoshima Fisheries Senior High School.
Hello, this is Kagoshima Prefectural Kagoshima Fisheries High School. We would like to take this opportunity to introduce this school which enjoys bathing in bright sunshine on a rocky seacoast. Features of this school:
This school is the only high school in Kagoshima Prefecture which majors in fishery.
It was established as a prefectural mercantile marine fishery high school in 1910 and an excellent tradition has been cultivated in its brilliant history of 88 plus years as an educational organization for bringing up the successors of a regional fishery industry and related industries.
It has accomplished steady development supported by the efforts and the sponsorship of the relevant people of the regional community.
The graduates now number over 7,000. They are working not only in the fishery field but also in other fields in Kagoshima as well as in other areas in Japan.
It is located on extensive school grounds (170,000 square meters) in Beppu, Makurazaki City. Its educational facilities include physical education gyms, martial arts pavilions, swimming pools, extensive gardens and wooded areas, boat houses and dormitories.
