Fish, oceans are failing, says famed SPC graduate
Sylvia Earle, known as "Her Deepness" to her colleagues in oceanography, will speak at SPC's graduation ceremony.
By ADRIENNE P. SAMUELS, Times Staff Writer Published May 6, 2004 World renowned oceanographer Sylvia Earle predicts a bleak future for grouper and tuna lovers if their eating habits don't soon change. The fish are being consumed faster than they can procreate and within 50 years, they could be extinct. "It's not going to be a pretty sight," said Earle, a former Dunedin resident, 1953 graduate of then-St. Petersburg Junior College and the former chief scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "As compared to what it was like in the 1950s, 90 percent of the grouper and snapper and other large fish are gone." Fishermen and developers might not want to hear it, but it's the truth, said Earle, who plans to spread the message of conservation and preservation during her Saturday address to the 2004 graduating class of St. Petersburg College.

Sharks Imagine swimming leisurely in the refreshing ocean water on a beautiful sunny afternoon. You turn towards the shore , and you see that you have gone farther out than you planned. That's when you start thinking about what might be swimming along side you. You frantically start swimming back to shore as you are trying not to think about the fierce teeth, powerful jaws, and sleek body cruising the surface behind you. You safely make it back to shore only to realize that you narrowly escaped being attacked by a shark. S harks ruled the oceans even before dinosaurs roamed the land. They have been around for about 400 million years. There are over 350 species of sharks. They live all over the ocean, in cold to temperate waters, usually cooler than 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Almost all sharks are carnivores, eating dolphins, seals, sharks, and other fish. They are cold-blooded animals. This means that their bodies change temperature as the water's temperature changes. Sharks are built cruise slowly through the water for long distances. A shark's skeleton is made of cartilage which is tough and flexible, similar to a human's ear, and it has 5 to 7 pairs of gill slits. These slits help the shark to absorb oxygen from the water into the bloodstream. Its skin is like a spiky suit of armor. You can be injured by simply touching the shark. These teethlike scales, or denticles, are shed and replaced just as the teeth in their powerful jaws are.

Director of the Ocean Life Institute Introduction
As part of this national dialogue, the Ocean Life Institute of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution hosted this Symposium on Marine Protected Areas on August 27-29, 2001. The meeting was the second in our series called “Fisheries, Oceanography and Society”, which is intended to explore various aspects of fisheries as they affect marine science, conservation, economics and social structure. The aim of the current symposium was to provide a broad view of current thinking about marine protected areas. This included the perspectives of various stakeholder groups, some favorable to MPAs and some with reservations. The meeting also placed emphasis on the scientific theory and practice that are fundamental to the rational planning and management of reserves in varied ocean environments. Most of the discussion of MPAs in this meeting was about no-take reserves, at least for some species.

Light penetrates the Gulf water column from top to bottom, making it one of the most productive bodies of water in the world. A rich variety of organisms thrives in this environment. This butterfly fish is at a coral reef offshore of Karan Island, Saudi Arabia. (Photo: Mark Eakin) Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are ocean regions where human activities are limited or prohibited. Depending on the location, limited activities may include trawling, drilling for oil, or taking any living or nonliving resource from the area. MPAs are increasingly employed as tools for marine conservation and sustainability of fisheries. Successful MPAs need the support of scientists, policymakers, fishing and oil interests, and environmental regulators and activists.
To promote fuller understanding of the underlying oceanographic, ecological, economic, and political realities involved in planning an MPA, the Ocean Life Institute sponsored a two-day symposium in the summer of 2001. It was called "Marine Protected Areas: Design and Implementation for Conservation and Fisheries Restoration."

25 February 2003 KENDALL POWELL Website reveals coral damage between 1960 (top) and today (bottom). Artwork: Illusion Arts Documentaries portraying teeming life beneath the ocean create a deceptively rosy impression. That's the message in a new campaign from a group of filmmakers and scientists. Called "Shifting baselines: the truth about ocean decline", the project uses a website showing Hollywood footage, animation and scientific commentary to reveal the damage hidden beneath the waves. The campaign's leader, Los Angeles-based filmmaker Randy Olson, says that there has not been a conspiracy to suppress this message - rather, poor public education has prevented it from getting out. "More than a quarter of all coral reefs are now dead and the majority of the world's fisheries are in severe decline," he says. "Scientists and environmentalists should feel a responsibility to communicate the truth," says Olsen. The website, www.shiftingbaselines.org
