The oceans influence all life on earth. We actually know relatively little about the oceans. The Earth exists 4,500,000,000 years; modern technology less than 100 years. In our times, political and commercial decisions are made, which can destroy developments of billions of years, in just days, hours and minutes. Some may think that changes in one drop of water don't change the 1,300,000,000 km3 of water on earth. A human being also consists of billions of cells; the change in just one cell, may be the beginning of a terminal illness.

COASTAL ISSUES
Coastline
- The total length of the world's coastlines is about 504,000 km, enough to circle the Equator 12 times. The apparent length of a coastline depends on the scale (length of ruler) at which it is measured. The coastline appears longer as shorter rulers are used, because more small features are included. Canada has the longest coastline of any country. The 1996 Canadian Encyclopedia gives the length as 243,797 km, including the major island coastlines while the 1997 Guiness Book of Records gives a figure of 244,800 km, including the islands. Erosion - As coastal zones become more and more crowded, the quality of coastal water will suffer, the wildlife will be displaced, and the shorelines will erode. 60% of the Pacific and 35% of the Atlantic Coast shoreline are eroding at a rate of a meter every year.

Theme: Oceans and Undersea Life by Lara Chapman and David Herring This unit can be presented as a school wide theme or for an individual class. It is not all inclusive and does not represent all that is available for classroom instruction where oceans and undersea life are concerned. The unit is divided up into sections allowing the teacher to pick and choose to fit their needs Focus: Students will study the oceans and seas of the world, the animal life that swims in them and the countries that border them. Grade Level: Primary (K- 5th) Suggested Objectives (Not All Inclusive):
1. Know how much of the world is covered with water.
2. Name the four oceans and the major seas.
3. Name the countries bordering the four oceans.
4. Know the difference between salt and fresh water.
5. Know the foods that we eat which come from the oceans.
6. Students will have a concept of environmental issues affecting the ocean and its organisms.
7. Know the food chains, life cycles and plant life found in the oceans.
8. Know how oceans/seas effect our weather.

Students can learn exactly what marine biologists and oceanographers do, while teachers will find lesson plans to encourage interest in and respect for the ocean. The Smithsonian Institute’s interactive aquarium exhibit makes an ideal place to begin exploring the mysterious creatures that live on the sea floor, whether you’re a student, a teacher, or just someone who enjoys watching fish glide by. If you find yourself soothed by the motion but don’t want to invest in an aquarium, download the next best thing, a fish screensaver.
Because the ocean routinely faces man-made threats to its wildlife, websites often post news items and conservation updates. To encourage people to get involved, they also describe local projects to preserve reefs, clean up pollution, and monitor the sea animal population. Here you can discover suggestions for saving the oceans by doing simple things like properly disposing of chemicals and supporting political candidates with proven commitment to the environment. Via organizations like Earthwatch, you can even participate in conservation expeditions to exotic locales, thereby combining grassroots action with a chance to see the world.

A new species of scorpionfish was discovered More than 600 new species of fish have been discovered by a major ocean census and thousands more may be lurking undetected.
Some 300 scientists from 53 countries are creating a record of all known marine life, in a project reminiscent of an aquatic Domesday Book. The 10-year Census of Marine Life project will form an open database of raw material available to everyone. It will pinpoint endangered animals and suggest how to protect them. Pole to pole So far, 15,304 species of fish have been logged. Between 2,000 and 3,000 more are expected to join the list before the census ends in 2010 - and many will be previously unknown species. We are at the start of a great adventure, like going to the moon

    http://www.oceanoasis.org/teachersguide/activity10.html
How would you describe a marine food web? What would be in it?
    In the Film Concept
Organisms interact with one another in various ways. Objective To construct a food web representative of the Gulf of California Content Science, language arts Background The interactions of organisms with other organisms and with their physical environment form the basis of the study of ecology. Food chains and webs are often used to portray these interactions. Plants ( producers consumers . Those animals that feed upon plants are called primary consumers, while animals that eat other animals are secondary or even tertiary consumers. Scavengers feed on dead organisms, while decomposers break down nonliving organic matter into materials that again are available to enter the food chain as nutrients . Nutrients of the marine ecosystem tend to settle to the bottom. Upwelling of cool water brings the nutrients closer to the surface where they are available to phytoplankton (very small plants drifting in the sea). The phytoplankton, in turn, become food for zooplankton (very small ocean animals) and larger organisms. Mysids (tiny shrimp), barnacles, fish, sponges, sharks, dolphins, and sea birds are just some of the many animals seen in

The Living Sea Life Near the Surface The sea is home to billions of plants and animals. Many live only near the sunlit surface. Here you'll find everything from microscopic plankton to the giant blue whale. Oceanographers classify marine organisms by separating them into two primary groups: plants and animals. Ocean Plants
Images from data collected from satellites show densities of phytoplankton in the Atlantic Ocean. Red shows where phytoplankton is densest, followed by yellow, green, blue and violet where it is least dense. Phytoplankton's spring bloom (shown right) occurs when days are longer and more nutrients come up from the bottom. There are two general types of plants found in the ocean, those having roots that are attached to the ocean bottom and those not having roots which simply drift about with the water. The rooted plants in the ocean are only found in shallow water because there is not enough sunlight to sustain photosynthesis in deeper waters. Since sunlight does not penetrate more than a few hundred feet into the ocean, most of the ocean is not capable of supporting rooted plants. Nevertheless, plants are found throughout most of the oceanic surface waters. The most abundant plants in the ocean are known as phytoplankton. These are usually single-celled, minute floating plants that drift throughout the surface waters of the ocean. A bucket of sea water might hold a million microscopic diatoms which are relatives of seaweed encased in glassy boxes. To grow, phytoplankton need nutrients from the sea water and lots of sunlight. The most light occurs in the tropics but nutrients there, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, are often in short supply. When large quantities of diatoms and other phytoplankton are present they give a color to the sea. Spectacular phytoplankton blooms are found in cooler waters where nutrients are brought up from the sea floor during storms.
