About The Fish Shop.
(latest update: 14th October 2003)
A lot has been written about fish, that is true. While reading, the observative reader will have noticed, that a lot of misstatements have been made about fish. Your need of reliable information on fish will be satisfied on these pages.
One of the early, and probably most interesting and complete works on British fish, is without any doubt "A history of British Fishes" by William Yarrell (1836) . Yarrell (1784-1856) was the first important British ichthyologist. His work is still worth reading and one of the most reliable early European works on fish. The Fish Shop offers you all of Yarrell's work on freswater fish. At this moment we are busy presenting you excerpts on freshwater fishes from the charming "The Natural History of British Fishes" by Frank Buckland (1826-1880) . The Fish Shop is a sequel to its Dutch predecessor: "De Visschenwinkel" . After completing the presentation of Buckland's work on freshwater fish, we will proceed, as was done on the Dutch Visschenwinkel, by adding more scientific or otherwise outstanding literature on freshwater fish. Alwyne Wheeler (1969) more than once.

Our thanks to the primary authors of each for allowing us to use these lists as the basis for this index. Scientific and common names follow Mayden et al. , except for some (mostly subspecies) found only in Williams et al . Only native North American freshwater species are included here. Species described subsequent to Mayden et al. 1992 will be added as we obtain images or other information. For information on exotics see the NBS Nonindigenous Fish Database Links lead to fish photographs (P) distribution maps (M) abstracts of biology/systematics/ecology (A) , and assorted other textual information (OTX) held by BOTH TNHC and Desert Fishes Council , and files on other servers (lower case links - e.g. xtx).
