mandate is to ensure sustainable use of the fisheries resource. Management programs are developed to provide the greatest benefits to Manitobans, by maintaining or enhancing fish populations and habitat, monitoring harvest and habitat alterations, and allocating resources for the best return. Manitoba's 100,000 lakes cover approximately 17% or 101,600 km2 of its surface area. In addition, rivers, streams and marshes are home to important fish habitat. Healthy fish habitat provides sustainable benefits to sport, commercial and domestic users throughout the province.

Try these links below for more information M ost people who read this message throughout the year are anglers and commercial fishermen, but even those who do not fish can appreciate the wholeness of the aquatic environment that enables productive and healthy fish resources. This wholeness, or ecosystem as it is generally referred, is equally important for cascading trout streams, flowing rivers, and tidal waters of the Chesapeake and Atlantic coastal bays. The ecosystem is as important for the well being of our society as it is essential for survival, growth and reproduction of fish resources and high quality sustainable fisheries.
Ecosystems are not stable. They change due to entirely natural trends or events that are beyond our control. They change also due to the effect of human populations and the ways we have modified the landscape. Fisheries Service cannot manage the ecosystem, but we can more deliberately move to ecosystem-based management of our fish resources and associated habitat.

Issues too important to leave to chance or the vagaries of bureaucracies and politics. To protect and improve the cold water fishery of the Lake Superior region and to bring various groups of anglers together in an atmosphere of friendship so they can work for their and the resources common good. ICES Homepage FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT ICES SYMPOSIUM: "ACOUSTICS IN FISHERIES AND AQUATIC ECOLOGY" Montpellier, France 10-14 June 2002 As climate change, environmental factors, and fisheries depletion increase concern about marine life, the need for accurate assessments of fish and plankton becomes ever more urgent. Acoustical methods are the primary remote-sensing tool in the aquatic environment. The fifth ICES Symposium on acoustics of aquatic systems will explore recent advances and the expansion of acoustical methods into a broad range of environments. New analytical techniques, new technologies, and innovative acoustical implementations are changing the way we evaluate aquatic life. This ICES Symposium, the first on this topic to be held in the new millennium, will provide a unique opportunity for the international community to take stock of this rapidly evolving field. OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE Since the first symposium on fisheries acoustics, 30 years ago, these methods have been used extensively for observation and measurement in oceans, lakes, and rivers. Scales of study extend from a few centimetres to hundreds of kilometres, and from individual organisms to entire populations of fish and plankton. Recently the scope of acoustics has increased dramatically, and the methods and tools provide information to fisheries biologists as well as to ecologists, in most aquatic ecosystems : from the deepest oceans to extremely shallow waters, from unicellular organisms to the biggest marine mammals, for limnological and littoral environments, for pelagic, demersal and benthic populations, or even bottom type and

Great Southern Fish ... Winter Recipes Squid can make a superb meal provided it is fresh and cooked correctly. Old overcooked squid can be chewier than bubble gum and more suitable for tyre retreads than the table. The secret is to catch it yourself or buy it from a reputable fish shop. Ask among your friends - it shouldn’t be too difficult to find someone who loves squid and can recommend a good fishing spot or shop! Plain Gorgeous Squid Rings (serves 4) This is great as a snack or an entree. 1 squid, cut into rings ½ cup of plain flour 2 eggs 1 cup dried breadcrumbs 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil Freshly ground black pepper (to taste) Method Place the flour in a plastic bag, add the squid rings and, holding the top of the bag tightly closed, shake the contents. Break the eggs into a small mixing bowl, add pepper and beat. Dust off the excess flour from the rings, dip them in the beaten egg and roll in breadcrumbs. Place them on a plate and refrigerate for 15 minutes (to set the breadcrumbs).
