Jones Hole National Fish Hatchery was established in 1956 under Section 8 of the Colorado River Storage Project Act, and produced it's first trout in 1970. Located on 390 acres in a beautiful sandstone geologic setting, the hatchery provides management and production of trout for mitigation of Colorado River Storage Project waters of the Upper Colorado River System and to meet Tribal trust responsibilities on Native American land. As the natural aquatic habitat changes from natural (drought, flood, habitat destruction) or human (over-harvest, pollution, habitat loss due to development and dam construction) influences, the natural production of fish declines. Stocking of fish is one of the many management strategies used by biologists to help replenish the populations for years to come. Last revised 7/23/2002 Home Species Production Distribution ... 70. Dusky Shark Threats
Report produced by the US National Marine fisheries Service describes how unregulated commercial and recreational fishing could drive the species towards extinction. Features a short history of recent impacts on the species and how the decline in abundance is related to the demand for fins for soup in Asia.
http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/prot_res/species/fish/Dusky_shark3.html
Dusky Shark (Carcharhinus obscurus) Candidate Species
Threats
Currently the principal threat to C. obscurus is from commercial and recreational shark fisheries off the east coast of North America, the southwest coast of Australia, and the eastern coast of South Africa. In each of these locations there are longline and/or gillnet fisheries that target sharks, including C. obscurus. In all cases these are multispecies fisheries making the management of a single species such as C. obscurus more difficult. Off North America the proportion of C. obscurus in the catch is decreasing, while fishing for more abundant species continues, which could drive this population toward extirpation. The rapid expansion of the commercial shark fishery in the U.S. in the late 1980s was fueled in large part by the demand for shark fins in the markets of Asia (Cook 1990). Dusky sharks have one of the highest rated fins for shark fin soup because of their large size and high fin needle content (ceratotrichia) (TRAFFIC 1996; R. Hudson, pers. comm.). Although dusky meat is used domestically in the U.S., the very high value of the fins suggests that the decline in this dusky shark population over the past decade has been, and continues to be, driven by international trade in shark fins. There is little reason to believe that the demand for dusky shark products will lessen, especially as other fishery resources become increasingly depleted. The fishery for C. obscurus off southwestern Australia developed in the 1940s, but rapidly increased in the late 1970s to produce annual catches of 500-600 tonnes. The fishery uses demersal gillnets (16.5 to 17.8 cm stretched mesh) to target neonates in the nursery area and the selectivity of the nets results in very few individuals over 3 years of age being captured. The flesh of the young C. obscurus is highly regarded and fetches a good price on local markets. Fins are also sold. Assessment of the fishery using population models is difficult, and a tagging study has been undertaken to determine exploitation rates. Current estimates are that 18-28% of neonates are caught in the first year. Although this is high, assessments indicate that this level of exploitation may be sustainable since only a small number of year classes are targeted (Simpfendorfer in press).

Fish stocks are national and international resources that have to be husbanded carefully. If we lose them from over-fishing, they may take many years to regenerate. We also have to protect all marine species from sea pollution which could wreck their ecology.

Inland Fisheries Division Angling Regulations Sportfishing Weekend Lake Surveys ... Species Factsheets Species Sheets: Inland Lake Trout ( Salvelinus namaycush
This salmonid is a member of the charr family and is also called grey trout, Great Lakes charr, forktail trout, mountain trout, namaycush, mackinaw trout, salmon trout, togue, laker and touladi. Distribution Lake trout are indigenous or native to North America and are found in every province and territory, with the exceptions of Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island. They are well established in Alaska and the Arctic islands. The present distribution of native lake trout is largely due to glacial activity and the retreat of the Wisconsin ice sheet about 10,000 years ago. As this ice sheet melted and retreated northward, it scoured the landscape, producing thousands of freshwater lakes. As a result, good habitat was produced and lake trout were able to recolonize much of their previous range. It is estimated that 8,000 to 10,000 lakes around the world contain lake trout. About 75% of these lakes are in Ontario, Quebec and the Northwest Territories. In Nova Scotia, there are known populations of lake trout in Sherbrooke Lake, Lunenburg County, and Dollar Lake, Halifax County. They are also thought to be present in Pockwock and Big Indian Lakes, Halifax County, and Lochaber Lake, Antigonish County. Physical Characteristics Lake trout are the largest trout native to North America. The largest lake trout on record weighed 46.3 kg (102 lb), which was caught by the commercial fishery at Lake Athabasca, Saskatchewan in 1961. The angling record contains a specimen weighing 32.8 kg (72.25 lb), caught in Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories, in 1995. In Nova Scotia, the average lake trout caught is usually less than 2.0 kg (4.4 lb). A lake trout weighing 8.6 kg (19 lb) and measuring 81.3 cm (32 inches) was caught in Sherbrooke Lake, Nova Scotia in 1992.
